CAIRO - 1 February 2020: The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean will hold a press conference in Cairo on Sunday to discuss the latest developments of coronavirus outbreak, said the Director-General of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom after holding the emergency committee meeting on Jan. 31.

"The World Health Organization is working in conjunction with the Egyptian Ministry of Health to enhance the country`s capabilities for early detection, examination and rapid response to public health events,” the representative of the World Health Organization in Egypt John Jabbour said on Saturday.

“This comes in the context of full compliance with international health regulations. Until now, the organization does not recommend imposing any restrictions on international travel and trade” he added.

The press conference will highlight the updates of the regional situation that will be reviewed by the leaders and experts of the organization followed by an interactive session to answer the reporters’ questions.

WHO continues to provide full support to countries where the disease has spread to monitor its directions to avoid its spread, Jabbour said.

Among the most important recommendations of the emergency committee announced by Tedros are to accelerate the production of vaccines and treatments, and to face rumors and misinformation.

He also recommended examining the resources required for isolation and care for affected cases to prevent disease transmission between individuals, as well as supporting countries with weak health systems.

Tedros also said that countries coordinate and share data and information with the World Health Organization, to counter the risk of the disease that is threatening us all.

The World Health Organization calls on citizens to remain calm and take precautions to keep themselves safe, prevent the spread of the virus and reduce the risk of transmission.

The World Health Organization recommends that individuals avoid contact with people with acute respiratory infection (ARI), wash their hands frequently, especially after direct contact with patients or their surroundings, and avoid contact with farm animals or wildlife without protection.

Basma Osama receiving her Master’s at Ningxia University. Credit: Basma Osama

Living in the region of Ningxia in Northwestern China since 2013, Basma Osama is a 28-year old teacher and student at the Ningxia University, where she is completing her PhD degree in Anthropology.

After graduating from Suez Canal University in 2013 from the Chinese Language Department, she traveled to China to complete her Master’s degree in teaching the Chinese language for foreigners.

Since the coronavirus outbreak, which saw all of China’s cities go under intense lockdown, she has been locked inside the university’s campus. Basma shares her own account of the events with Egyptian Streets below.

Early January

Before the Lunar New Year, the coronavirus wasn’t that well known. We knew there was a virus, but we didn’t know how contagious it was, so people went on their daily lives and travels as usual with little trouble.

Everyone had already bought all their necessary food items and shopping lists from the supermarket because all the shops and restaurants close during the holidays.

None of us were really scared or panicked. It was just like, ‘Oh, there’s a virus, we have to be careful’ and that’s all. There were probably only around 2 cases in my area.

Mid January (26-27)

Suddenly, we started to hear that the coronavirus is spreading quickly because of the holiday season and all the traveling, especially from our friends in Beijing and Wuhan in particular.

At the very beginning they told us to wear a face mask, and to always remain clean and use sanitizers.

Then we were told to not go out at all. If I move inside my own building, they check my temperature and I have to be wearing a face mask and take all prevention measures with me.

If I use my car, they would then spray some kind of sterilizer inside it and also around the wheels.

When you enter the building once again, they spray on your jacket and shoes and everything, and then around the entire building. No visitors are allowed.

For those that need anything from the supermarket or anything else necessary to buy, they ask us online around two times a week of what we need and then they deliver it to us directly.

It gets quite lonely and dull since we aren’t allowed to go anywhere, and even though there is another Egyptian girl in my building, we don’t see each other much because everyone is trapped inside their own room.

Late January

A lot of people are telling me that it is better to get back to Egypt, but – as Basma – I actually feel quite safe.

It almost feels like we are a community fighting the disease together, and if one of us gets hit by the virus, then it feels like we are all hit. No one is treated differently because of where they are from, or whether they are Chinese or not. They treat us all the same.

A couple of days ago, EgyptAir released a statement that it is canceling all flights to and from China starting February 4th.

This is when the fear started to really kick in, because I was unsure if I will ever be able to return to Egypt and how long this could last.

I wasn’t planning to return, but the fact that the flights are cancelled for a certain unknown period made me feel more scared and unsure of what I should do.

If I choose to travel and return back home, there is probably a higher chance that I could get hit by the virus during the journey. So what should I do?

We all feel like we are carrying a huge responsibility to not transmit the virus to Egypt, and that’s why many of us are choosing to stay.

What this year`s Sundance movies taught us about going viral

In 2020, "going viral" is hardly a new concept. We all know what it means, even your Luddite relatives. We`ve all seen it happen, and and have maybe even experienced it ourselves to varying degrees.

And yet there remains an air of mystery to the very concept. What does it signify? What does it feel like? How does it happen? And why?

At this year`s Sundance Film Festival, several films attempted to grapple with precisely those questions, from a wide array of angles to equally diverse results. Perhaps the most explicit is Feels Good Man, a documentary about one of the most viral memes of all — Pepe the Frog. Read more...

How Google Assistant changed my bedtime routine

Living in New York, it should come as no shock that my room is very small — like, literally 63 square feet*insert smiling through the pain emoji here*

But you better believe I still have all of my electronics — space heater, lamp, AC unit, and TV — hooked up to a smart power strip. Never mind that I can reach everything from my bed. I`m a millennial, so yes, everything has to be "smart" in my home.

Using my beloved Google Home Mini, I`d normally say things like "Hey Google, turn my air conditioner on" or "Hey Google, play Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard on Spotify."

But that was before I moved to a new place located directly above a punk rock bar (trust me, it`s not as cool as it originally sounded in theory). I`ve since had to get creative with different ways to drown out the awful music hammering away at my eardrums the minute my head hits the pillow. Read more...

Gamer to gamer, here`s why you need the right chair (and desk)

The days of sitting cross-legged on your floor playing Mario Kart are long gone. Modern day gaming takes more hand-eye coordination and endurance than ever before, and as such, ergonomic accessories like gaming chairs and desks are important investments that hardcore gamers need to help ensure they can play comfortably and safely for hours on end.

The right chair, for instance, should offer lumbar support, as well as have plenty of padding to help cradle your head and neck. In the case of desks, it should be wide enough to support multiple screens, and let you get close to your monitor without sacrificing room for your accessories. And because gaming equipment like controllers, consoles, and games aren`t cheap by any means, scoring a chair and desk setup on sale is key.  Read more...

Shaped as a cross with a circle/loop for the top part, the ankh is the most commonly used symbol among the ancient Egyptian symbols. Many Egyptian gods were depicted holding the ankh in numerous inscriptions.

Also known as crux ansata, which means “the cross with a handle” in Latin, the ankh symbol is an ideograph of ancient Egyptian culture.

“What is an ideograph?”  You are asking. An ideograph/ideogram is a graphic symbol that is used to represent a concept or an idea notwithstanding any conditions like the context of a language.

The Ankh: Meaning – What Does It Symbolize?

Although there have been many theories regarding the transformation of the symbol throughout the centuries and its exact origin could not be determined, the meaning of the ankh symbol is very clear. It means “life”.

However, the ankh meaning “life” was simply not the only context Egyptians made use of the symbol. Here is a detailed look at various meanings attributed to it.

From Flickr

The Ankh, the Key of the Nile Symbolizing the Union of Man and Woman Creating Life

The ankh represents the union of man and woman and symbolizes the creation of life through this union.

According to one of the theories regarding the origin of the ankh, the symbol might be the combination of the male and female symbols representing Osiris and Isis, the cross and the oval, respectively.

It was believed that the union of Osiris and Isis flooded the Nile every year and gave Egypt life by providing fertility. That is why the symbol is also known as “the Key of the Nile” and this is also the reason it is considered to represent the union of heaven and earth.

The horizontal part of the cross represents the division between the heaven and earth while the vertical part is considered to represent the two-way communication between these two realms.

The Ankh Symbolizing the Life-giving and Purifying Power of Water

In some of the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, the king was depicted as if he was being fed little ankhs in a way that it could be interpreted as “breathing life into the king”.

That being said, some hieroglyphs feature the king and two gods washing him over with a stream of little ankhs.

Within this context, the ankh symbol represents the purifying power of the water although some experts suggest that the king in the inscription is washed to regenerate his life.

The Ankh as the Symbol of Clairvoyance

Placed between the eyes of an initiate, the ankh means that the initiate now has the power of clairvoyance and can see “the world beyond”.

Therefore, it is also considered as the lock on his mind to make him aware of his duty to keep secret these superior powers and the knowledge of the mystery he now has.

The Ankh within the Context of Death and Immortality

Egyptian gods are depicted holding the ankh in the hieroglyphs of the time.

This represents that they are immortal and they are the ones controlling life and death. Therefore, it was believed that the deceased should have had the ankh on themselves while they were on the Boat of the Sun God or while their souls were being weighed – to show that they were seeking the immortality their gods had.

The ankh was also considered as the key to the tomb which leads to the realm of eternity, the Fields of Aalu.

On a side note, the word “ankhu” was used to refer to the dead while the word “neb-ankh” (meaning “the possessor of life”) was used to refer to sarcophagi.

Drawn on the walls of the temples, the ankh symbol is believed to provide divine protection for the dead.

When it was placed on the mummies, the ankh symbolized the numerous reincarnations these souls would have to go through until they gain immortality and become god-like entities.

Ancient Egyptian religion is not the only religion that uses the ankh. Many centuries later, the ankh symbol was adopted by the Christian Coptic church and has been used as the symbol of life after death since then. This kind of ankh is named crux ansata or the Coptic ankh.

CAIRO – 1 February 2020: Cairo Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced to death Egyptian terrorist Hesham Ashmawy and 36 members of Ansar Bait al-Maqdes terror group over multiple crimes including assassinations of policemen.

The case is referred to the Grand Mufti for religious advisory and the final verdict will be announced on March 2. Referring cases to Grand Mufti is a standard procedure that seeks the religious authority’s approval on sentencing a defendant to death, although his decision is not binding.

In this case, there are 208 defendants who are charged with 54 crimes that consist of assassinations of policemen, attempted murder of former Minister of Interior Mohamed Ibrahim, and bombings of security institutions’ buildings.

The Public Prosecution’s arraignment states the following crimes: founding, leading, and joining a terrorist group aiming at suspending the constitution, laws, and prohibiting the state’s institutions from fulfilling their responsibilities; violating the citizens’ rights and freedoms and jeopardizing national unity and social peace; espionage with a foreign organization embodied in Hamas, the military branch of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood; vandalism of state buildings; deliberate and attempted murder; and, acquisition of firearms, ammunition, and explosives.

The 54 crimes drawn against the defendants included 49 murder case of police officers and citizens, including Lieutenant Colonel Mohamed Mabrouk, and Major General Mohamed el-Saeed. They are also accused of orchestrating explosions that targeted three security directorates, destroying 25 public facilities, including mosques and churches, and stealing a post office, and a vehicle transferring money.

This is the second death sentence handed to Ashmawy after he was extradited from Libya to Egypt. Last November, Ashmawy was handed the first death penalty by the Military Criminal Court over committing 14 crimes pertinent to the Farafra Terror Attack against a Border Guard ambush five years ago killing 28 officers and soldiers.

The handing over of Hisham Ashmawy, the ex-military officer and the mastermind behind several high profile attacks in Egypt, was seen as a revenge for dozens of terror victims among army and police forces over the past years.

From military to militancy

Born in 1978 in Giza, Ashmawy or Abu Omar al-Muhajir, 41, was an officer in the Egyptian Commandos as a member of Sa‘ka Forces or Thunderbolt Forces.

He was transferred to an administrative post in 2007 after a change in his behavior as he promoted for political Islam through spreading banned books. He was suspended from the army in 2009 after he stood a military trial; then he traveled to Syria via Turkey.

In 2013, Ashmawy moved to Sinai where he became in charge of the military wing of Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis. He started to develop the performance of the group and improve their militancy skills.

Following the June 30 Uprising, he was accused of failed assassination of former Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim, and the killing of a colonel and brigadier general during a firefight in the Qaliubiya village of Arab Sharkas.

Defected from Islamic State (IS) terror group, Ashmawy went to Derna, 250 km far from Egypt’s western borders, where he announced in a voice recording his leadership of the al-Qaeda-aligned militant group al-Mourabitoun in the Islamic Maghreb.

Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis announced in November 2014 its allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS), Ashmawy refused to pledge allegiance to ISIS.
