A Sunday report from the New York Times lays bare a chilling statistic regarding the role social media platforms can play in facilitating child sexual abuse and the spread of child pornography online.

Of the 18.4 million reports of child sexual abuse worldwide in 2018, a staggering 12 million trace back to Facebook Messenger. That`s according to "people familiar with the reports." Although it`s only one facet of a much more widespread problem, the outsize role played by Messenger is hard to overlook.

Even more troubling is the fact that efforts in the tech space to protect users could only worsen the situation. Facebook`s Mark Zuckerberg wrote at length back in March about the company`s plans to create a more secure platform, and it`s a process that includes encrypting private content on the site. Being alive today can feel like an exercise in surviving constant chaos. Everything is happening all the time, and feeling overwhelmed by existence has become our generation`s unfortunate norm. In the best of all possible worlds, this is the point at which a hero emerges — an icon who encapsulates the lawless rage that simmers beneath the surface of the populace and whose actions release the tension felt by all in the face of increasingly dire circumstances.

Our hero has emerged. That hero is goose.

Untitled Goose Game was developed by Australian game studio House House and released on Nintendo Switch, MacOS, and PC Sept. 20, and even though the game`s runtime is relatively short, its horrible goose protagonist has captured the deliciously chaotic heart of the internet. We can always count on Robert De Niro to drop some F-bombs on live television.

The actor appeared on CNN`s Reliable Sources Sunday morning to discuss backlash he`s received from Fox News for speaking out against Donald Trump. (In particular, the network took issue with his iconic "Fuck Trump" moment at the 2018 Tonys.)

De Niro did not seem particularly affected by the criticism. "Fuck `em," he said, referring to Fox News. "Fuck `em."

@BrianStelter asks Robert De Niro about criticism he gets from Fox for speaking out against Trump.

"Fuck em," De Niro replies. "Fuck em."

Stelter reminds him, "This is cable, so it`s not an FCC violation, but it is still a Sunday morning." pic.twitter.com/9IOo1VvXCM

Actress Ruby Rose revealed on Thursday that she underwent emergency surgery earlier in 2019 after a stunt injury left her at risk of paralysis.

The Batwoman star discussed her experience in an Instagram post, which also included a graphic video of the surgery itself. (We don`t recommend watching if you`re squeamish, but it is pretty metal.)

"To everyone asking about my new Pez dispenser scar on my neck... A couple of months ago I was told I needed an emergency surgery or I was risking becoming paralyzed... I had herniated two discs doing stunts, and they were close to severing my spinal chord [sic]," she wrote. Read more...

SpaceX`s much-heralded Starship reveal on Saturday night was undone somewhat by the fact that it`s hard to maintain secrecy with a 165-foot vehicle.

The Elon Musk-hosted evening presentation in Boca Chica, Texas gave viewers on the ground and watching from home via the livestream an update on the long-in-development spacecraft. The SpaceX Starship is a reusable vehicle capable of carrying both passengers and cargo beyond Earth`s orbit and out into our solar system.

Musk has described it as a "multiplanetary" transport that "will allow us to inhabit other worlds. Nevermind the fact that SpaceX hasn`t actually launched a crewed ship into space at this point, as NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine pointedly made clear in a statement on Friday. Read more...

Old Joe is back.

The junkyard owner played by Larry Hankin who appeared on Breaking Bad a few times is apparently returning in El Camino. He`s still doing his thing at the junkyard when he receives a call from... someone. Probably Aaron Paul`s Jesse Pinkman? But this is Breaking Bad-adjacent. Don`t be surprised if even this brief moment defies expectations.

Saturday Night Live doesn`t always have great politics, but on one issue it is absolutely correct: Apple picking sucks.

Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon play sisters who run a pick-your-own apple farm. If you`ve ever been apple picking, you`ll know the kind they`re talking about: A very foggy place swarming with bees where every apple is already on the ground because — so sorry — you just missed peak picking season.

Host Woody Harrelson is particularly funny here as Hank, a farm employee who "came with the land." Even if roasting apple farms isn`t your cup of tea, stay for the petting zoo segment. "We found some animals, and now they`re in prison," Hank says, later embarking on a sad anecdote about donkey depression. Good stuff. Read more...

Saturday Night Live is back with quite a bit of ground to cover, including the ongoing saga of Donald Trump`s looming impeachment. On Weekend Update, Colin Jost talked about how it`s felt to watch it all go down — most notably, how Trump can make something as serious and world-altering as impeachment feel like a full-on rodeo. (Further driving home this point is a clip of Rudy Giuliani screaming on Fox News.)

"[Impeachment] should feel like a huge historic moment, but with Trump even impeachment just feels silly," Jost said. "You know, like the movie Nixon was a serious film directed by Oliver Stone. The movie about Trump is gonna be from the dudes who brought you American Pie." Read more...

This is going to be exhausting, isn`t it?

The first episode of Saturday Night Live`s 45th season has officially aired, and of course it opened with honorary cast member Alec Baldwin bringing back his Donald Trump impression. The real Trump is facing impeachment, so of course the SNL crew is facing the same thing.

This isn`t so much funny as it is a parade of faces both familiar and new. Joining the well-established impressions from Kate McKinnon, Cecily Strong, Chris Redd, Beck Bennett, Mikey Day, and Alex Moffat are new ones from Aidy Bryant (attorney general Bill Barr), new cast member Bowen Yang (Kim Jong-un), and, in a weird twist, Liev Schreiber, who pointedly isn`t impersonating anyone. On Saturday Night Live, there are breaks and then there`s whatever happened here.

The Season 45 premiere featured a sketch that was meant to expose the empty noisemaking of political punditry on TV. But part of the joke involved a series of quick costume changes, and some weirdness during one of those switches led to a complete and total breakdown.

Aidy Bryant, the segment`s host, couldn`t take it. She manages to keep it together until what appears to be an accidental wide shot exposes some of the magic as we see a woman who`s probably a member of the SNL wardrobe crew fiddling with Aidy`s costume. Read more...

The average Saturday Night Live sketch tends to top out at around 6 or 7 minutes. This one? It climbs past 10 minutes. Like everything else relating to the race for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, the sketch is overstuffed with personalities and loses the script quickly.

On the other hand, we do get host Woody Harrelson as Joe Biden and guests Maya Rudolph and Larry David as Kamala Harris and Bernie Sanders, respectively. Everyone gets some screen time, but thankfully the guests get most of it.

Cut SNL some slack here. There`s months of candidate wrangling to catch up on in this Season 45 premiere, and these 10-pluus minutes somehow manage touch on all the most ridiculous IRL stories. Read more...

It`s tough to practice real self-care when the internet`s obsessed with #self-care. Let Mashable help with our new series Me, My Self-Care & I.

Self-care is important for all humans, including those floating in space.

Think about it. If it’s challenging enough to incorporate self-improvement and wellness-boosting techniques into our daily routines, with the benefits of social connection, the pull of gravity, and fresh air at our disposal, how hard must it be for astronauts?

Self-care in a space context is anything that contributes to astronauts` mental and physical well-being while floating among the stars. Astronauts are tasked with adjusting to a new environment with reduced living quarters and limited hygiene facilities, while establishing working relationships with crew mates, keeping in touch with friends and family back home, balancing work and rest, and keeping up with their physical and mental fitness.  Read more...

Cleaning the interior of your car is anything but enjoyable. The outcome is definitely worth it, but the time and effort you put into it can be quite frustrating. In these times, climate change and the effects of a warming planet are top of mind, especially with recent extreme weather events, Donald Trump administration policy roll-backs, and climate activists like Greta Thunberg reminding us how we`re destroying her future.

So in true 2019 fashion, the heartwarming story of the week isn`t about a kitten and a duck snuggling, but about a gas station in Maryland fully embracing emission-free transportation, or at least cleaner energy than gasoline to power vehicles.

As CNBC first reported, the RS Automotive gas station in Takoma Park, Maryland, outside of Washington, D.C., switched out all its pumps for electric charging stations on Thursday. Working with the Electric Vehicle Institute and the city, the conversion was possible through a 786,000 grant from the Maryland Energy Administration.  Read more...

On Friday night, a completely unremarkable college football game produced something extraordinary. The Virginia Tech Hokies didn`t do much to write home about on the field, but on the sideline, a robot celebrated the few points they scored in its own way.

ESPN`s broadcast of Friday night`s Virginia Tech-Duke matchup captured footage of a robot that does pushups for each point Virginia Tech scores. When the Hokies kicked a field goal to go up 3-0 in the first quarter, the robot peeled off three quick pushups to show support for the home team.

This is either a neat, futuristic gimmick or a case of rampant automation claiming another human job. As ESPN`s commentators pointed out, sideline pushups used to be the realm of cheerleaders and mascots. Kansas State University`s mascot Willie the Wildcat, for example, is the king of the touchdown pushup. Read more...

Google launched YouTube Music four years ago, but Android owners have been able to avoid it. Until now, anyway.

In a Friday blog post, Google announced the YouTube-branded music streaming service would supersede Google Play Music as the default music player on Android devices. It`ll come pre-installed on new Android 9 and Android 10 devices, though Google was quick to note that Google Play Music can still be downloaded from the Play Store.

This probably won`t be all that disruptive in the short term, since the old app isn`t going away. Plenty of people probably use a separate service like Spotify anyway. That said, it`s worth noting that there are going to be drawbacks to YouTube Music becoming the new go-to Android music app. Read more...

It`s been a big year for black holes. Back in April, NASA gave us our first direct glimpse of an existentially terrifying gravitational event, and now, the agency has gotten another look at what one can do to a star much like our own sun.

NASA announced this week that Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (or TESS) managed to spot what`s called a tidal disruption event. In layman`s terms, that`s when a star gets a little too close to a black hole and, well, it stops being a star after that.

There`s a lot of fun space lingo at play here. NASA is calling the event ASASSN-19bt, named after the ASAS-SN telescope network that first noticed the tidal disruption back in January. Once the star got close enough to the black hole, it experienced something known as "spaghettification," which is when an object encounters gravity so powerful that it gets stretched out like noodles. Almendres cromlech megaliths. Evora, Portugal.

Prehistoric Europeans told legends about powerful, mysterious female makers of European stone tombs called dolmens and cromlechs. On the one hand, they were said to bestow riches and fertility on individuals, and fantastic gifts like brewing beer and farming; all they wanted in return was a little milk.

On the other hand, they were described as angry snakes guarded by bulls, cursing people and hoarding the very gold of the sun. They were imagined as beautiful cloven-hoofed snake- or bull-women, who guarded the dolmens and could speak with the dead, spin the rays of the sun, and even create the world.

The Megaliths of the Mouras Encantadas

In her master`s thesis of 2014, archaeologist Henna Lindström of the University of Helsinki in Finland writes of the folktales and legends of years gone by that grew up around the supposed supernatural makers and guardians of Portuguese dolmens. Ms. Lindström`s fascinating paper details stories from other parts of Europe about the Mouras Encantadas, as the mysterious women are called in Portugal.

He’s a writer, producer, and a director, but plenty of other people are as well. Murphy’s special skill lies in creating worlds that look and sound like candy-colored versions of our own that feature elements that are more or less real — glee clubs exist, people do murder occasionally, and as seen in Netflix’s The Politician, high school elections are a thing — but that tilt in bizarre directions that feel “off.” The space between his shows’ intent to discuss real issues or events and the high-flying weirdness of them is where most of their humor is derived, as well as most of the enjoyment if you’re a fan of his work.  Read more...

Readers, it is time to discuss the most compelling scandal gripping our nation this week: Donald Trump being bad at spelling and grammar.

Trump attacked the media once again on Friday morning with a strange tweet, which focused particularly on what he felt was a bad chyron on CNN. That chyron quoted another one of his tweets (this one from Thursday), where the president referred to Rep. Adam Schiff as "Liddle` Adam Schiff." (In a later tweet, he called for Schiff`s resignation.)

To show you how dishonest the LameStream Media is, I used the word Liddle’, not Liddle, in discribing Corrupt Congressman Liddle’ Adam Schiff. Low ratings @CNN purposely took the hyphen out and said I spelled the word little wrong. A small but never ending situation with CNN!
