Back in April, New York relinquished its unreasonable ban on electric-assist bicycles within the city. And now the first bike-share fleets featuring e-bikes have arrived.

Jump Bikes, which ironically started in New York City, finally arrived in the Big Apple after riding into San Francisco; the nearby beach town of Santa Cruz, California; Washington, D.C.; and other cities more recently.

This weekend the e-bikes available through the Uber app (Uber acquired Jump earlier this year) were newly rentable in Staten Island, and on Monday, the bikes made a debut in the Bronx. Jump still also has its own standalone app, which lets you rent bicycles for 2 for 30 minutes, the same price via the Uber app. Read more...

Twitter just began the hardest part of its cleanup effort.

The company announced Monday that it had selected academic partners who will help study "healthy conversation" as part of its ongoing effort to make Twitter less toxic.

The researchers will tackle some of Twitter`s toughest problems. One group, led by Leiden University political science professor Dr. Rebekah Tromble, will study echo chambers, "uncivil discourse," and intolerance. The goal, according to Twitter, is to "develop two sets of metrics: how communities form around political discussions on Twitter, and the challenges that may arise as those discussions develop." Whether you`re heading back to school or need to be ready for that new job, the right laptop makes all the difference. And if any company has been able to meet those needs affordably, it`s been Google with the Chromebook. But if you`re in the market for something a little more powerful, Google and Walmart have just what you need.

First, we have the Google Pixelbook 12.3" 128GB for 757.64 at Walmart, down from its listed 999 price. The Pixelbook sports a 128GB HDD for storage, along with the Intel Core i5 and 8GB of RAM, so you know it will deliver on the performance side. And while on paper the design is described as a 2-in-1, the design could almost be described as a 4-in-1. This is thanks to the flexible keyboard, which can act as a stand or fold over on itself, similar to foldable tablet covers. Read more...

After threatening Special Counsel Robert Mueller and accusing a Parkland survivor of being a crisis actor, InfoWars host Alex Jones is finally, sorta kinda, facing repercussions.

Facebook recently suspended Jones for 30 days and took down four of his videosYouTube removed four videos as well, issuing Jones a "strike." Receiving three strikes would kick Jones off YouTube, however, strikes also expire after three months.

Far quieter, however, has been digital streaming platform Spotify, who continues — despite some outrage — to host multiple InfoWars podcasts from Jones on site.

Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple

Of all the Hindu temples in India, the wealthiest by far is the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple. According to Guinness World Records, this temple replaced the Tirupati Temple (also in India) as the richest Hindu temple in the world in 2011 due to the discovery of secret cellars containing a vast treasure of gold, silver and precious stones.

One of the Holiest Abodes of Vishnu

The Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple is located in Thiruvananthapuram, which is situated in the south-western Indian state of Kerala. The principal deity worshiped at this temple is Vishnu. According to one source, the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams in India. These 108 temples are mentioned by the Hindu Azhvars (saints) between the 6th and 9th centuries AD as the holiest abodes of Vishnu. Therefore, the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple has been occupying an important place in the Hindu religion for a very long time.

Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon doesn`t seem to be letting the Emmy nomination for Season 3 go to his head.

Lyft released a new monthly subscription plan on Monday for routes you take often, like home to the office or from the gym.

The "personal plan" is now available after the ride-hailing company had tested its all-access plan and other variations starting late last year. The all-access plan, which offers a set number of rides for a discounted up-front price, is still available.

The new plan locks in set pricing between two routes for a monthly fee. So for 7.99 per month you can guarantee unlimited rides at a rate of, say, 9.99 per ride, or whatever it would be between the two locations you choose. Read more...

The Big Mac is turning 50 soon, and McDonald`s is going to celebrate the way everything is celebrated in 2018: by releasing their own currency — though it comes with a twist.

While crypto is a big thing these days, McDonald`s is throwing a curveball into the self-release currency game by putting out an actual, physical coin called the "MacCoin." At least we know its exact value, though: one Big Mac, or about 3.99.

The MacCoin will be redeemable for a free Big Mac at "participating locations" across 50 countries. As for how to actually procure a MacCoin, though, the company is a wee bit more vague in a press release: "a variety of exciting giveaways with each participating country celebrating the arrival of the MacCoin in its own unique way."  Read more...

Triple-digit temperatures and parched land have left much of California`s expansive forests vulnerable to any spark or flame.

The Carr Fire, which started on July 23 after a vehicle caught fire, has spread to nearly 100,000 acres as of July 30. From hundreds of miles above, satellite images show a state besieged by an imposing plume of smoke, with a vast part of the region blanketed in a thick, brown haze.

Like many of you, I`ve spent the last 30 or so months glued to Twitter in a white hot rage. Even days when the Trump administration isn`t allegedly torturing families, I find something, someone to be mad about: perhaps a particularly bad Mark Duplass take or just Stephen Miller, existing.

I`m desperate to find good humans on Twitter. The kindness reserves feel depleted. Everywhere I look, there are monsters. Last week I got so down I  Google image searched "Jimmy Carter shaking hands on a plane" in a desperate attempt at finding something decent.

But altruism isn`t dead. There are still good humans out there — or, at minimum, really well crafted bot accounts — who exhibit real human kindness. You just need to know where to find them. That`s true especially for Twitter, which features an exceptionally high density of deeply angry people. Read more...

Instead of buying a car, paying for a four-year education at a state school, or stocking up on enough Hot Pockets to keep a person fed for roughly 53 years, someone took 87,672 and spent it on a single Magic: The Gathering card.

The elusive Alpha Black Lotus card was sold on eBay last week for that jaw-dropping sum, Kotaku reported Saturday.

Take a look at this very expensive piece of action:

The very expensive Black Lotus card.

So what makes this card so expensive? First of all, it`s a really good card. While in most cases players can only tap a small amount of mana every turn (only one on the first turn, thanks to the game`s rules), this card allows you to tap an extra three mana, which is a huge advantage early on in any game. Amazon will no longer let audiences vote on which TV pilots they want to see developed into full-length series.

According to an Entertainment Weekly report, executives from Amazon Studios told a group of reporters on Saturday that the company would be halting its innovative practice of letting audiences vote on which TV shows are eventually made.

Amazon Studios started conducting viewer polls six years ago as an attempt to gain feedback on some of the pilots it developed. The process was used to vet some of the company`s most popular shows, including Transparent and Man in the High Castle.

MoviePass is a great idea that only works if its "see all movies in theaters" promise can be fulfilled. Unfortunately for subscribers interested in Mission: Impossible - Fallout, that wasn`t the case over the weekend.

Subscribers were already up in arms after app issues temporarily barred them from checking out any movies last Thursday. Even more troubling, the issue was later revealed to be caused by a missed payment owed to one of the service`s ticket suppliers.

It took a 5 million loan secured by MoviePass parent Helios and Matheson Analytics to fix the situation, the second such service outage in July 2018. Everyone`s favorite Parent Trap twin is a long way from Napa. Lindsay Lohan`s new MTV series Lohan Beach Club (working title) is taking the actress turned nightclub mogul to Mykonos, Greece.

Belgian museums are banding together to take on Facebook over the social media giant’s rules on nudity, specifically of the artistic variety.

The Flemish Tourist Board is trying to convince Facebook to change its rules over how it treats artistic nudity from Flemish Masters such as Peter Paul Rubens. The tourist board, Visit Flanders, points out that its Facebook postings with images containing artistic nudity are often removed by the company when they try to promote them.

Basically, Facebook’s rules do allow for the paintings to be posted on its social network, but the issue arises once a Facebook page, such as the museum’s, wants to promote the post on Facebook advertising platform. Belgian museums are saying this is making it difficult for them to attract visitors to its locations. Read more...

Netflix, as a platform, is as good at breaking things as it is at building them.

This post is part of Science of Sci-Fi, Mashable`s ongoing series dissecting the science (or lack of science) in our favorite sci-fi movies, TV shows, and books.

Hollywood`s attempts to peek into the future are more art than science. Science-fiction TV shows, focused on making good stories, are happy to take liberties with what`s scientifically plausible if it serves the plot.

For the most part, audiences come along for the ride without questioning the realism. If the USS Enterprise crew is already doing a currently impossible thing, it isn`t such a leap of the imagination to think it also carries machines that beam matter across space or devices that cure diseases overnight.  Read more...
