Joe Biden has an SEO problem.

The former vice president and current Democratic primary competitor hoping to become the party nominee has an official campaign website where he asks for donations and touts his various legislative accomplishments. There`s just one problem: that website has, for some time now, been eclipsed by a troll website lightly masquerading as a pro-Biden page.

So reports the New York Times, which notes that "the most popular Joseph R. Biden Jr. website" over the course of "much of the last three months" has been https://joebiden.info, as opposed to the official https://joebiden.comRead more...

An atom

A few decades ago, who would have imagined that we’d be able to photograph a hydrogen atom? Given what we know about quantum mechanics, the whole concept would have been dismissed as absurd.

But in that creative nexus where science and technology merge, miracles can happen. The seemingly impossible can become reality, and that is exactly what happened in 2013 when an international team of scientists successfully captured an image of the hydrogen atom, in all its simple yet sublime glory.

This amazing feat was announced in the May 24, 2013 edition of Physical Review Letters. It was achieved by a group of nine scientist connected with universities and physics institutes in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Greece and the United States. To accomplish this task, they developed a new type of observational device known as a ‘quantum microscope.’ This equipment and the experiments it enables allow physicists to peer all the way into the subatomic realm, without disturbing it or altering its nature.

Conventional microscopes magnify microorganisms or other objects too small to be seen with the naked eye. In general, the more powerful the microscope the smaller the object or life form that can be seen.

But beyond a certain point we can descend no further. Quantum physics prohibits the visual exploration of the extremely small, since the very act of trying to see into the subatomic realm shapes its reality.

It`s not the White House, but that`s exactly the point.

Less than a week after President Trump attempted to pick a fight with U.S. women`s national soccer team star Megan Rapinoe after she mentioned that, under no circumstance, will she go "to the fucking White House," Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez proffered a more, shall we say, enticing offer.

"It may not be the White House," tweeted Ocasio-Cortez on Friday, "but we’d be happy to welcome @mPinoe & the entire #USWMNT for a tour of the House of Representatives anytime they’d like."

Well that didn`t take long.

President Donald Trump announced Saturday that Chinese manufacturer Huawei will be able to once again purchase goods from U.S. technology companies. This is a sharp reversal from his stance in May 2019, when Reuters reported that the U.S. Commerce Department said the company would first need U.S. approval to purchase goods from American manufacturers.

According to The Washington Post, Trump made the announcement following a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"We had a very, very good meeting with China, I would say probably even better than expected," the Post quotes Trump as saying.  Read more...

Every so often, a ray of light shines through to illuminate our dark world. This is one of those times.

Twitter`s @boybehindbricks (display name Whit as of this writing), a graphic designer and self-described "cat mom," is a big Lady Gaga fan. So is her grandpa. They`re both very aware that the pop star is in the midst of a long-term Las Vegas residency.

Whit is turning 21 in September and she was hoping to get the family out for one of Gaga`s Vegas shows. But it wasn`t to be; the tickets have been available long enough for the shows to sell out, and the pricing from any reseller is way outside the family`s budget. Grandpa was disappointed. The U.K. grime star Stormzy staged an epic Glastonbury Festival set on Friday night, but the real star of the night was out in the crowd.

Tara Asher is a British Sign Language interpreter, and — according to the BBC`s Colin Paterson — is also one of only four who specializes in signing grime. And on Friday, she brought her talents to Stormzy`s Glastonbury set, where she translated his entire set into BSL.

(For anyone who might not know, "grime" is a musical genre born in the U.K. that`s like a blend of dancehall and hip hop.)

Asher`s performance — there`s no better word to describe her contribution to the show —  is a delight. She apparently spent an entire day rehearsing for each of the songs she performed. It shows. Read more...

Yes, it`s only just launched, but it`s already clear the latest game from the Pokémon Go creator is going to be one of this summer`s more memorable games. And it`s easy to see why. It takes the same formula that made Pokémon Go one of the most successful games ever and brings it to one of the most beloved franchises of all time. No, it`s not perfect (what game is?). Every day of Pride Month, Mashable will be sharing illuminating conversations with members of the LGBTQ community who are making history right now.

Julia Weldon is the non-binary artist we need in today`s world.

For all those who are struggling with love, loss, and life, regardless of identity, this singer/songwriter`s work emphasizes that we can`t make it through life alone.

Before breaking into music, Weldon was a child actor at 13 (when her "boyishness" was an asset, she told Mashable) performing alongside career legend Meryl Streep in Before and After. It was through acting that she began to explore her queer and trans identity, and recognized the importance of LGBTQ representation to change lives.  Read more...

Sometimes the world needs a moment that is so gloriously pure that nothing can ruin it. Thankfully, we have that moment thanks to Cookie Monster.

On Thursday afternoon, the famed Sesame Street character joined the list of legends to sing baseball classic "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the seventh inning stretch of a Cubs game at Wrigley Field. It was as amazing as you`d imagine.

The Cubs have hosted a rotating cast of celebrities to lead the crowd in song since the 1998 death of legendary broadcaster Harry Caray who would usually conduct the crowd at Wrigley. Many of those singers have been memorably awful. Read more...

This is Ode To..., a weekly column where we share the stuff we`re really into in hopes that you`ll be really into it, too.

Echoing with the sounds of nature, the calls of birds and soft keys,  “A I R (Air In Resort)” suddenly popped up while I was listening to music on YouTube, something I tend to just leave on like the radio while working these days.

The album, which I`m now obsessed with, was produced by Japanese ambient musician Hiroshi Yoshimura. Designed to complement a fragrance for cosmetics company Shiseido back in 1984, the record was merely a gift with the perfume.

For that reason, “A I R (Air In Resort)” isn’t available on streaming services, and I’m puzzled to think where I would think to find it — if it didn’t just appear out of nowhere on YouTube. Read more...

Avengers: Endgame made headlines earlier this year with the introduction of the first gay character in the franchise`s 11-year history. But according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, the moment wasn`t intended as a major milestone.

"It was just meant as a small step, to say and attest, to not have to be made a big deal about it, to have Steve Rogers, this noble hero, not even blink an eye at it, when he’s dealing with this grieving man and this grieving support group," he explained to Mashable in a call.

The Gravity Blanket wasn`t some newfangled invention when it debuted on Kickstarter two years ago; weighted blankets, also known as anxiety blankets, have been used as a form of therapy for people with autism and other mental health conditions since the late `90s

But when Gravity`s campaign on the fundraising site took off — as in, "surpassed its original goal by more than 4.7 million" — it catapulted weighted blankets into mainstream popularity as a self-care and sleep aid.

And that, kids, is the reason why everyone and their dog has a weighted blanket on their bed these days.

Sometimes, nice guys finish first — even in the corridors of the world`s wealthiest company.

Here`s a telling tale of the first time I interviewed him in 2001, long before he added the "Sir." His groundbreaking iPod had just hit the market. He was soft-spoken, careful, serious. A second U.S. city is banning its municipal government from ever using facial recognition technologies over fears it`ll pave the way for mass surveillance.

On Thursday, the city council of Somerville, Massachusetts voted 11-0 to pass the anti-facial recognition ordinance, which calls out the technology for its potential to "chill" protected free speech.

"The broad application of face surveillance in public spaces is the functional equivalent of requiring every person to carry and display a personal photo identification card at all times," reads the ordinance.

The ordinance also points to how facial recognition technologies can misidentify people, particularly women and non-whites. The ordinance adds that "many of the databases to which face surveillance technology is applied are plagued by racial and other biases, which generate copycat biases in face surveillance data." Pose’s first season was revolutionary television for a number of reasons. Its cast and creative team had a record-setting number of queer and trans people of color, and its fantastically glittering portrayal of New York’s ballroom scene served as the backdrop for stories that rarely, if ever, get told with any level of authenticity on television.

There is one upside, though: All of the best streaming releases come out mid-summer. We never thought we`d get to say this, but Stranger Things 3 is just a few days away — followed by the final season of Orange is the New Black on July 26.

If you`re going to be using every waking moment to binge-watch the new releases, you might at well do it on a 4K TV. (How else are you going to see the dark scenes in Stranger Things?) There are some seriously good deals sprinkled across Amazon, Dell, and Walmart this weekend, including 600 off a 65-inch Samsung QLED TV and 1,000 off an 82-inch Sony Bravia TV. Read more...

TL;DR: The game-changing iPhone X is paired with a Straight Time gift card at Walmart, and the bundle is 200 off — getting you the 64 GB model plus 45 of airtime for 744.

The pressure to get a new iPhone every time a new one comes out sucks.

The iPhone X, which set the precedent for iPhones with that sweet vertical camera system and no home button, is still a damn good phone even in the shadow of the XS. If you want to test these upgrades out for as little as possible, Walmart has the iPhone X (64 GB) with a 45 Straight Talk Airtime gift card for 200 off — getting you one of the best iPhones and prepaid unlimited data for 744. Researchers in Japan hope that a new 3D printed myoelectric prosthetic system will reduce the cost of currently available prosthetics. Their system uses machine learning that needs to be trained to distinguish the motions of each individual finger to learn how to perform more complex gestures, where multiple fingers move simultaneously.  Read more...

Marvel Studios isn`t saying much about their plans for the future. But one thing we do know is that Disney+  will be a huge part of it.

Speaking to Mashable over the phone, studio president Kevin Feige gushed about the opportunity that their Disney+ projects give them "to further expand and link together the MCU between different media, films and streaming."

"That has never been done before," he added.

While that is basically true, the idea of interconnected shows and movies has been touted by Marvel before. You`ll probably remember that the early marketing for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. leaned heavily on the idea that it was a cohesive, interlocking part of the MCU, and that people on both sides were happy to tease the possibility of a Defenders / Avengers crossover that never happened. Everyone is always talking about whether a hot dog is a sandwich, but no one ever addresses the most important hot dog question: Should a hot dog weigh 66 pounds?

For hot dog purveyor Feltman`s, the answer is an emphatic yes. The iconic business, which is responsible for giving Coney Island its first hot dog in 1867, created a 66-pound, 5-foot long monster in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the world`s biggest hot dog.

Yes, people actually ate the hot dog. In fact, it was sold for 10 per slice (yes, slice) at a lower Manhattan block party, with all proceeds going to the Headstrong Project, a nonprofit focusing on mental health care for veterans. Each piece was topped with mustard and sauerkraut. Read more...
