Valve Corporation`s VR headset, Valve Index, will officially launch in May 2019. The previously rumored launch was confirmed with a teaser on Friday with more details forthcoming.

Per earlier rumors, the Valve Index should have a 135-degree field of view and knuckles controllers. It`s also likely that the tracking will be "inside out" (sensors inside the headset, as opposed to previous generations of Vive and Oculus, which used external sensor stations to track movement).

Valve is a company that can be cautious with specific ventures, so its foray into second-gen VR speaks to how far the technology has come and Valve`s faith in this product. Valve Index will have to compete with Vive and Oculus products of the same generation, so expect it to be able to hold its own. Read more...

Aztec god of the underworld Mictlantecuhtli

Mictlantecuhtli was a god in the Aztec pantheon. Translated literally, his name means ‘Lord of Mictlan’, Mictlan being the Aztec underworld or land of the dead. The Aztecs believed that there were a number of paradises and entry into them depended on the manner of one’s death. Those who failed to gain entry to these paradises, however, would end up in Mictlan, the domain of Mictlantecuhtli.

Mictlantecuhtli’s Abode

The Aztecs believed that the cosmos was divided into three parts – Ilhuicac, (the heavens) on the top, Tlalticpac (the earth, or land of the living) in the middle, and Mictlan on the bottom. The Aztecs also believed that Mictlan was divided into different layers, nine to be exact, and that Mictlantecuhtli resided with his wife, Mictecacihuatl, in the last of these layers.

Everyone has a different tolerance for horror movies

But the one thing even those easily spooked can agree on is that scary movies can be overall enjoyable if they`re more funny and less, you know, spine-chilling.

Not everything has to be Hereditary-levels of sinister or conversely, veer into the extremely silly Scary Movie category.

The following films offer the perfect balance for those looking to dive into the genre through comedy and without worrying about being haunted by nightmares for weeks.

Happy Death Day (2017)

Happy Death Day is actually a great modern-day slasher film that doesn`t take itself too seriously. It`s got a well-defined, fun narrative. Read more...

Antonio Monteiro set a Guinness World Record in February for his enormous collection of 20,139 video games. Now, he`s finally showing them off.

Monteiro walked through his treasure trove, which includes full North American sets for several consoles, in a video for Guinness World Records YouTube channel. He keeps all the games, which are stacked on the floor and on shelves up to the ceiling, in a single room. (The room seems pretty small at first, then just keeps going, and going, and going.)

The collection took officials eight days to count.

The U.S. version`s three-button controllers will come with USB connectors. And for anyone with original controllers, sorry, but they won`t work.

It was brought to the internet`s attention on Friday that Tom Hiddleston recently starred in a Centrum commercial.

The ad, which was made for the company`s Chinese market, is filmed from the perspective of an unknown woman — perhaps a vlogger, judging by the vertical video format — who walks down the stairs to find Tom Hiddleston making her a breakfast that does not look very good. "I finished early, so I thought I`d pop back in and make you breakfast," Tom Hiddleston says.

How did Tom Hiddleston get into her house?

Then, Tom Hiddleston stares expectantly at the camera as the protagonist prepares to eat her meal (which includes, of course, Centrum vitamins). "You look great," says Tom Hiddleston. Thank you, Tom Hiddleston. Read more...

This is One Good Thing, a weekly column where we tell you about one of the few nice things that happened this week.

If you love the movie Coco (and if you don`t, you`re a monster), prepare to cry all over again thanks to this stunning recreation of the film`s titular Mama Coco made entirely of food.

View this post on Instagram

MAMA COCO from COCO Mash potato, vermicelli noodles, purple cabbage, shrimp, white tortilla wrap, tomato Mama Coco reminds me so much of my naneh - the most kindest, selfless person I ever knew- not a single bad bone in her body. My naneh lived with us growing up, she would walk me to school, cook the most delicious meals and would tell the most amazing stories before bed- my favourite - Shangool, mangool hepeh angoor. As I got older, life got in the way and I visited her less and less. After a few years my naneh moved back to Iran where she eventually developed dementia. Even through this dementia when I would talk to her she would still remember my voice and call me her Zanboor 🐝 Every year I would tell myself - this year would be the year that I would go visit her in Iran- but again life got in the way and I never did. 😔 To this day my biggest regret was not travelling overseas to see her one last time before she passed. I miss her smell, I miss her voice, I miss her. 😔 If you are lucky enough to have a grandparent still alive- pick up the phone - call them, visit them as they don`t have much longer on this earth and one day you will regret it- just like me. They say everyone has a guardian angel and I know my naneh is mine. This one is for you Naneh, I love you Love your Zanboor ❤️🐝 . . . Saltford Manor and Luddesdown Court. Which is the oldest house in England?

England is known for the huge number of surviving buildings from hundreds of years ago. From Roman lighthouses to Tudor palaces, there are hundreds of buildings which offer a glimpse into the fascinating history of the country. But where is the oldest house in England?

Two buildings of particular interest are Saltford Manor House and Luddesdown Court. Both of these buildings claim to be the oldest surviving houses in England and to determine which one really does deserve the title a number of factors should be examined.

Saltford Manor House

Saltford Manor House is located in the sleepy English village of Saltford, near Bath in Somerset. Although there is no surviving record of when the house was built, architectural historians have noted specific features of the building which place it to around 1150, and specifically 1148 due to a number of features which are also present in Hereford Cathedral, which was completed in 1148.

To be clear, many pranks are mean, and even more of them are a waste of perfectly good office supplies. But there are a few pranks that are still pretty good, even for people who aren`t members of the "epic prank" community.

Is April Fools` Day coming up? A co-worker`s birthday, perhaps? Are you simply jonesing to do some pranks this week? (Why?) Then consider doing one of these pranks — they`re low-effort, high-reward, and do not involve spilled liquids of any kind.

Best of all, we`ve divided them into "Harmless Pranks" and "More Serious Pranks" for a customized prank experience. If you`re pranking someone who`s never been pranked before, consider going for a harmless prank. If you`re pranking someone with a little more experience — or perhaps an enemy who doesn`t know they`re your enemy — go for a more serious prank.  Read more...

It takes time to put in the hours needed to master a craft. Not all of us can be Bob Ross — in fact, this video is proof.

If you`re just getting started on your journey to being an artist, all this can be discouraging. But the age-old adage holds true here: small steps lead to big things over the long term. Aspiring artists have to start somewhere, and this LED Adjustable Tracing Pad that`s on sale provides an easy way to do just that.

It’s a brilliant, no-brainer of a tool, really: A clear acrylic surface with a light shining behind it. You slip your reference image underneath, and affix your drawing paper on top. Flip on the light and select one of three brightness settings, and you can quickly get started tracing drawings at the illumination level of your choice. This makes it an easy way to block out distractions and get in the artistic zone. Read more...

The robot vacuum craze is still running rampant — and why wouldn’t it? No one wants to take time out of their day to vacuum anymore. (Especially not when that vacuuming requires dealing with pet hair.)

Anything that will make your living situation more comfortable while taking off loads of stress in the process is always a worthy investment — which is why you should take advantage of this sale on robot vacuums in the PCMag Shop while you have the chance. It’s the 21st century, folks. If your idea of learning a new language is listening to robotic voices narrate phrases on repeat, or sitting in a classroom listening to a teacher drone on — think again. There’s another way to learn: getting a song stuck in your head. (If you need a refresher on how fast that can happen, listen to this clip of Homer Simpson playing the "saxamaphone" and see if you can get *that* out of your head.)

Basically, the brain has a natural ability to memorize words that are applied to a rhythm. Makes sense, right? That’s why catching onto the lyrics of songs you like is a breeze, because it’s easier to remember the lyrics in a song than the words in a paragraph. Read more...

New Yorkers, you have at least one more year of wondering when SVU will film on your block.

NBC has renewed Mariska Hargitay-led Law and Order: SVU for a 21st season, making it the longest-running live-action series in the history of television.

In terms of longevity, this renewal puts SVU ahead of both its Dick Wolf predecessor Law & Order and the Western drama Gunsmoke, each of which ran for 20 seasons.

“I am deeply proud to be a part of this groundbreaking show, and humbled to make television history today,” Hargitay said in a statement. “The longevity and continued success of SVU is a testament not only to the show’s powerful storytelling and ability to connect with viewers, but to its necessity. Lyft became the first ride-hailing app to go public on Friday, skyrocketing to a 23.4 billion valuation.

But don’t get too excited for drivers. Investments in Uber and Lyft are basically big bets on future products like autonomous vehicles, not the people behind the wheel.

As we`ve seen, Lyft isn`t profitable. Last year it lost nearly 1 billion. So it`s not Lyft`s cash flow bringing in investors — it`s the company`s growth and the potential of its platform.

Apple just owned up to one of its most embarrassing fails of all time.

Just days after its star-studded event that was supposed to herald a new chapter for the company, Apple announced that its most anticipated accessory won`t actually be launching — ever. After more than a year of hype and delays, the company is killing AirPower.

While not entirely shocking given the long, unexplained delays to Apple`s wireless charging mat, its abrupt cancellation is a massive blunder for the Cupertino tech giant.

Though it`s not unheard of for a company to ax a planned product, it`s rare for it to happen after a splashy public announcement. For Apple, it`s completely unprecedented. The company plans out products years in advance and meticulously orchestrates the events where they launch. It goes to extreme lengths to keep future plans under wraps and adheres to punishing schedules to keep products on track.  Read more...

At first glance, Apple canceling AirPower seems like a huge fail. But it’s nothing compared to another recent hardware disaster.

The company announced its cool new wireless charger, Apple’s first, in 2017. It was supposed to charge multiple devices (iPhones, AirPods, Apple Watches, etc.) simultaneously — something other wireless chargers currently can’t do.

Most people are calling this a huge embarrassment. But is it really?

It’s hard to judge AirPower — an unreleased product which I have never used and had no bearing at all on my life — a failure while I’m sitting here typing this on Apple’s crappy MacBook Pro butterfly keyboard. Read more...

Ah, names. The definitive burdens we all must carry.

Most people can relate to having a name that sparks certain reactions from others, whether it be a movie reference or a bad joke. Growing up a "Harry" alongside the advent of Harry Potter, I understand this conundrum all too well. It`s never been a hinderance, per se, but sharing a name with the most famous wizard to never live can be irksome at times.

Since names are assigned to us, we don`t usually have a say in the title we get stuck with. They`re also not always very unique. It`s safe to assume that most names are shared by many, many people, characters, things, and places. Sometimes that commonality can lead to confusion and/or humor. One. Less. Thing.

Apple has officially canceled its long-promised wireless charging pad dubbed AirPower —vaporware that always looked lame as hell. The company copped to the half-expected news on March 29, surely devastating the few people that pre-ordered the 79 wireless-charging AirPods case

The rest of us, however, can rest easy in the knowledge that we never would have purchased one of those mousepad-looking things anyway. To get in on this latest trend, you`ll need to harness the power of your favorite group chat for something other than receiving 500+ missed messages the minute look away from your phone.

The Emoji Challenge has been picking up speed on Twitter recently, showing off some competitive spirit. If you want to get in on the game, just pick an emoji, recreate it as best you can IRL, then send it to your group chat and see who can one-up you.

Twitter user Jaydeh`s group chat has gone the most viral show far, and they`re the ones to beat so far in terms of sheer inventiveness.  Read more...

Horses are an underrated enemy, both in video games and in real life, and we should all get the chance to slay them more often.

In Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the first big boss you fight is a guy named Gyoubu Masataka Oniwa. Gyoubu has a big spear and an even bigger horse, and after trying and failing a handful of times to kill Gyoubu, I realized I wasn`t really fighting the man, I was actually fighting the horse.

And boy did I enjoy hitting that horse with my sword.

Contrary to popular belief, horses are not nice. I say this as a person with absolutely no expertise on horses or animals in general. I do know that they are large, they have scary teeth, they can kill humans with a single kick, and I`ve been afraid of them for almost my entire life. Read more...

It`s official: Apple`s AirPower wireless charging mat is dead.

The company confirmed to Mashable it has canceled its high-anticipated AirPower charging mat announced in 2017.

"After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project," Apple Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering Dan Riccio said. "We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch."

Apple`s second-generation AirPods are out, and they`re pretty great

If you pry them open and look inside, though, you won`t find too many big changes compared to the original AirPods which came out in 2016. According to iFixit, which has posted its teardown of the AirPods 2 Friday, Apple`s new buds are still extremely hard to repair.

It`s hardly surprising: After all, not many of us expect something as tiny as the AirPods to be easily repairable. But iFixit claims the AirPods, and their battery-charging case, are near-impossible to open — if you try it, you`ll likely break half the parts, so don`t try it.  Read more...

Asteroid Gault is self-destructing.

Images shot by the Hubble Space Telescope show the space rock — some 2.5 to 5.5 miles wide — has left telltale streaks of debris as it hurtles through our solar system. It`s gradually breaking apart.

Why? Sunlight heats up the surface of asteroids, and when enough heat radiates off the rocky body`s surface, this can propel the asteroid and force it to spin. With enough motion, shifting rubble and landslides on the massive rock can tumble into space. Basically, the asteroid is shedding.

Today, telescopes on Earth and in space (like the 29-year-old Hubble) can combine their observations to detect these rarely-seen events. Read more...

America`s foremost power couple Beyoncé and Jay-Z were presented with the Vanguard Award at Thursday night`s GLAAD Media Awards, where they delivered a powerful joint speech.

When GLAAD announced the award earlier this month, there was some confusion about why the two were being honored despite not being members of the LGBTQ community. However, the Vanguard Award is generally given to a public figure who does not necessarily identify as LGBTQ, but who has, according to GLAAD, "made a big difference in promoting equality and acceptance of LGBTQ people." (In 2018, for example, Britney Spears was honored.)  Read more...
