Bye, Siri. Make your car give you directions in your own voice.

Forget a random digital voice telling you to turn left in 800 feet. A new service "clones" real voices so that your mom, sister, or even you can be the one giving you directions.

It`s called "My Car, My Voice," and it`s built into Cerence, the voice software in many cars from Toyota, GM, Audi, Chrysler, BMW, and other automakers. It`s only available for the voice assistant built into the car, not Google Assistant or Apple`s Siri.

To generate the voice, you need a live person to speak a series of sentences into the Cerence app in your infotainment system, which means you can`t make it sound like your favorite celebrity unless you know them IRL. If you can get Timothée Chalamet into your car to record some phrases for you, by all means, please do. Read more...

Tana Mongeau opens up about her marriage with Jake Paul

Nearly six months after her very public wedding to controversial YouTuber Jake Paul, Tana Mongeau opened up about how her relationships have affected her mental health.

In a vlog posted on Sunday, Mongeau told her followers that she should have been single after her relationship with Brad Sousa ended poorly in April. Discussing her "really fucked up dating history," she also acknowledged the correlation between growing up with absent parents and her tendency to jump into relationships. And although her relationship with Jake Paul started out well, she said she was so infatuated, she ignored "any" red flags before their Vegas wedding.  Read more...

The case for `The Witcher 2`

There are, of course, the original Witcher books by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, as well as the video game series created by Polish developer CD Projekt Red. On Sunday, the game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which came out in 2015, set a new record for concurrent players on Steam.

That`s not surprisingThe Witcher 3 is the latest and best-looking game in the series, and it received a ton of acclaim when it first launched. Its sprawling open world filled with colorful characters and cool monsters is pretty enticing. Read more...

Obama includes `Old Town Road` in his favorite music of the year

Barack Obama is releasing his end of year lists, and his favorite songs of 2019 are all absolute bangers.

His round up includes viral songs like the remixed version of Lil Nas X`s "Old Town Road," which includes Billy Ray Cyrus` iconic twang in the line "spent a lot of money on my brand new guitar." The former president also included "Burning" by Maggie Rogers, "Not" by Big Thief," and "Seventeen" by Sharon Von Etten, confirming that Obama is in fact a sad indie kid at heart. He nodded to hip hop`s catchiest bops of this year, like "Suge" by DaBaby and Young Thug`s "The London," which featured J. Cole and Travis Scott.   Read more...

The 2020 slogan meme has everyone setting goals for the new year

Memes fall in and out of trend, but ASCII memes just keep coming back. Which is why it`s only fitting that one of the last memes of the decade involves ASCII art.

Like bunny signs or the "In this house" meme, 2020 ASCII slogans use text to create a graphic and make a declarative statement. The first version of the meme, according to Know Your Meme, superimposed the phrase "Secure the bag and spoil your mum" over a blocky 2020 created from underscores and vertical lines. It`s like declaring a new year`s resolution, or making a promising campaign slogan.

Secure the 💰and spoil

2019 was the year of `yikes`

To celebrate reaching the end of this year, we asked our reporters to look back on 2019 and pick one thing they thought stood out from the rest of the cultural chaos and cursed images. You can find the complete selection of our choices here.

The year 2019 can be perfectly summed up with one word: yikes.

Yikes isn’t a new term, of course. But the five-letter word has recently been pulled out of relative obscurity and repurposed as the perfect reaction to the almost infinite number of unfortunate situations the past year has presented us with.

Part of its utility is that it works for everyone, regardless of generational or political affiliation — it`s not just for the young and Extremely Online.  Millennials and Gen Z use it, old Republicans use it, and, for some reason, Donald Trump Jr. fucking loves to use it when retweeting news to own the libs.  Read more...

The best tweets of 2019

If life is a classroom, Twitter is the chalkboard.

The main point of Twitter is that there isn`t one. You can say whatever you want, whenever you want. While that can cause a ton of problems, it also allows for people to say what they`re truly feeling and thinking, which can be very relatable. I mean, where else on the internet can you scroll through a string of emojis typed by Cher, vitriol from the president, and a video of a baby in a wig.

Given the sheer number of tweets, it can be incredibly easy to miss the good ones, but don`t worry here are some of the greatest tweets of this year.

Scroll. Enjoy. Retweet, if you`d like. Twitter is your oyster.  Read more...

Greta Thunberg met David Attenborough for the first time. Here`s what they talked about.

What happened when 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg met 93-year-old natural historian Sir David Attenborough? Well, for starters, they talked about activism.

In a Skype conversation broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Today, Thunberg credited Attenborough`s legendary documentaries as the reason she became interested in climate change. The veteran filmmaker commended the teen activist for getting the world`s attention on the global climate emergency — leading a 4-million strong climate march is just one example.

"She`s achieved things that many of us who have been working on it for 20 odd years have failed to achieve. That is you have aroused the world. I`m very grateful to you. We all are, really," Attenborough said. Read more...

All the books, TV shows and movies Stephen King recommended in 2019

If you count yourself as a hardcore Stephen King fan, chances are you`ve probably read a decent chunk of the horror master`s work.

But have you read the stuff he`s been reading? Or watching, for that matter?

Anyone who`s dipped in to King`s On Writing memoir will know that he`s more than happy to talk about the fiction he most enjoys; the end of the book contains a hefty list of titles which King says have "entertained and taught" him, stretching all the way up to 2009.

But what about his more recent fictional recommendations?

Below is a pretty hefty list of all the books, TV shows and movies King has recommended via his Twitter feed in 2019. (We`ve included the adaptations of his own work that King has spoken positively about, too, because — although he`s obviously biased — he`s still pretty selective when it comes to his praise of those.) The most life-ruining pop culture crushes of 2019

This list is not just about being horny.

Thirst is a key component of a life-ruining pop culture crush, naturally — but there must be something a little off about the way you thirst for a fictional character or famous figure.

Perhaps this crush reveals something you`d have preferred not to know about yourself. Perhaps they spoil all other potential or existing paramours for you with their unattainable perfection. Sometimes, a life-conquering crush just derails your week or month or, well, life — you`ll find yourself googling them and mindlessly scrolling pages of image results, or watching the late night show you can`t stand just because they`re on it for five minutes, or just thinking about them saying "Climb in my fur" every damn day. Data leak by IoT device maker Wyze exposes personal information of 2.4 million people

Smart home device company Wyze has confirmed that personal data gathered from millions of users was left exposed on the internet for weeks, including email addresses and health data.

The breach was discovered by security consulting firm Twelve Security and confirmed by IPVM, both posting blogs about it on Dec. 26. According to Twelve Security, the compromised data gathered from 2.4 million people included users` emails, nicknames given to cameras, Wi-Fi names, health data like weight and gender, and information on users` Wyze devices.

The report has since been confirmed by Wyze`s co-founder and chief product officer Dongsheng Song, who said in a Dec. 27 forum post that user data was left exposed from Dec. 4 to 26. According to Song, human error was to blame for the breach. Read more...

Does YouTube radicalize users? This study says not —but it`s deeply flawed.

A new study of YouTube`s algorithm attracting mainstream attention this weekend claims that the online video giant "actively discourages" radicalization on the platform. And if that sounds suspect to you, it should.

The study flies in the face of everything we know about YouTube`s recommendation algorithm. There has been plenty of evidence that it pulls users down a rabbit hole of extremist content. A 2018 study of videos recommended to political viewers during the 2016 election found that an overwhelming majority were pro-Trump. Far-right allies of the authoritarian Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil say he and they wouldn`t have won election without YouTubeRead more...

Why Apple, Google, and other big tech companies create their own fonts

After its famous 1984 Super Bowl commercial, Apple officially unveiled the Macintosh 128k, the "the computer for the rest of us." The Mac revolutionized personal computing. And it was Apple designer Susan Kare’s job to create digital fonts and icons to usher in this new age.

"I was a typical customer that they were trying to attract, someone for whom the graphical side of it would have been attractive," Kare told a technology historian in 2000. "I didn’t really have much computer experience, but even then I found the rudimentary Mac more appealing to me than the Apple II."

Compared to most personal computers at the time — which used command line interfaces that were too technical for many users to understand— the Mac adopted a much more user-friendly graphical interface (GUI). It featured plenty of things that even the most novice computer user today understands intuitively — pointers, menus, scroll bars, windows, icons, and typefaces. Read more...

Greta Thunberg nails the #2019in5words challenge

It might seem difficult to sum up an entire year using only five words, but Greta Thunberg completed the task with ease.

Thunberg spoke those five words at Davos 2019 earlier this year when delivering a blunt climate warning to a room full of the world`s most powerful leaders.

The teen`s actions in 2019 have not only gotten her named Time magazine`s Person of the Year, but they`ve inspired many people, including actress and activist Jane Fonda, to fight the dire climate crisis that`s facing our planet head on. Read more...

Travis Scott reveals he`s an Elon Musk fanboy in new video featuring Tesla Cybertruck and Cyberquad

Travis Scott sent Tesla fans into a tizzy on Friday when he released two new videos to go along with the JACKBOYS project from his label Cactus Jack Records.

There`s an 8-minute long short film "JACKBOYS" which gives a quick flash of the Tesla Cybertruck and the Cyberquad ATV prototype. There`s also the "GANG GANG" video, seen above, which is basically an ad for Elon Musk products. (It also has some explicit lyrics so proceed with caution.)

The "GANG GANG" video is chock full of shots of the Cybertruck. At one point Scott takes an extended spin on the Cyberquad ATV, and he can also be seen holding the Not-A-Flamethrower from Musk`s The Boring Company. Very chill. Read more...

This Twitter game imagines a world where movie actors are replaced by Muppets

Have you ever watched a movie full of human actors and thought to yourself, "Man, I wish some of these people were Muppets."

It`s understandable — Muppets add an extra layer of fun and intrigue to everything. And if you haven`t yet yearned for actors to be replaced by comedic puppets, you most certainly will after reading this article.

On Friday, a thought-provoking tweet from @BeerBottleBlond sparked a very important Muppets discussion. The tweet encouraged people to pick a movie, choose one actor from that movie to keep, and imagine the rest of the actors played by Muppets. It`s a simple task, but the results were hilarious. `You` Season 2 hides twists in plain sight with killer easter eggs

The following contains major spoilers from a whole bunch of literary classics and Netflix`s You Season 2.

When he`s not elbows-deep in a rotting corpse, Joe Goldberg loves a good book.

In You Season 2, viewers followed Netflix`s foremost word nerd-turned-serial killer as he chased a woman to the City of Angels, and racked up a body count that would make Agatha Christie blush. Along the way, there was stalking, maiming, dismembering, killing, and heaps of classic novels.

Joe`s love for literature was well-established during his New York days, but in Season 2, You`s creators took special care in curating the works within Joe`s orbit. When he wasn`t celebrating Bisexual Pescatarian Week at Anavrin or suffering through another Great Gatsby "Old sport!" quip, Joe was slowly unveiling — through the books he was reading — the exquisite twists and turns that would befall him and his victims. 2019 was the year of the chicken sandwich

To celebrate reaching the end of this year, we asked our reporters to look back on 2019 and pick one thing they thought stood out from the rest of the cultural chaos and cursed images. You can find the complete selection of our choices here.

The earth is 4,500,000,000 years old, give or take a few million. For 4,499,999,999 of those years were missing the one key element to make them worthwhile: the Popeyes chicken sandwich.

It hit us like a flavor wave during an otherwise ordinary week in the middle of August. On Aug. 12, Popeyes unleashed its first-ever fried chicken sandwich upon the world to a glowing response. But things didn`t get real interesting until a week later, when a certain popular fast food chain took a subtle jab at the new sammy. Read more...

`Rise of Skywalker` is Star Wars` past. `The Mandalorian` is its future.

It’s been a hectic five years of Star Wars filmed entertainment, but the dust has finally settled. Time to take stock of what we’ve seen, and what it all tells us about the future of the franchise.

The Mandalorian season 1 finale dropped on Disney+ Friday; the final film in the Skywalker Saga arrived in theaters the previous Friday. For the first time since before the Episode VII (not yet The Force Awakens) release date was announced in 2013, we do not have a specific date for when we will see our next live-action Star Wars.

We know only this: It’ll be on our TVs, not on the big screen.

A mini-series about Obi-Wan Kenobi, starring Ewan MacGregor, is on its way courtesy of director Deborah Chow, who proved her mettle helming excellent Mandalorian episodes. That will probably go into production in 2020. A prequel series starring Rogue One’s Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and sassy droid K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) will follow, as will The Mandalorian Season 2, which is set to drop Fall 2020Read more...

Throughout the ancient history of the world, polytheism - commonly known as paganism or heathenism - was the defining aspect of all societies and civilizations.

Tesla `killers` that failed miserably

In 2010, the future of electric vehicles looked wide open. The terrain was rocky, but fertile; full of opportunity, if you could make it through the technical and consumer crags.

Now, 10 years later, things look different. Established car companies like General Motors and Porsche are elbowing for their share alongside startups like Rivian and Byton. But one company is inarguably both the trailblazer and master of EVs: Elon Musk’s Tesla.

In the first half of the decade, headlines frequently predicted doom for the fledgling company. When any new all-electric vehicle idea came out, critics were quick to anoint it with the label “Tesla killer,” no matter car type, range, or level of luxury. Those labels didn’t stick, however: Tesla is still alive and well. In fact, is "affordable" sedan, the Model 3, made up an eighth of all EV sales worldwide this year. It dominates.  Read more...
