Sadly, Game of Thrones isn`t returning until April 2019, but if you`re in the mood for some show- related news to hold you over, we`ve got you covered.

Brett Ratcliffe, a University of Nebraska entomologist and professor, decided to name three of his eight newly discovered beetle species after Game of Thrones characters. How fun!

According to The Omaha World-Herald, Ratcliffe named the three species of beetles — each from the Gymnetis genus — after Daenerys Targaryen’s three dragons: Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion.

The official species names are drogoni, rhaegali and viserioni, the Latin versions of characters` names. Read more...

Lady Gaga has officially made her Las Vegas debut with brilliant blue hair and an emotional AF performance of "Shallow."

The singer closed out the opening night of her Enigma residency by performing the hit song from A Star Is Born live, for the first time, and boy was it something.

"For a really long time I felt so misunderstood about the way I dressed, the way I talked, my attitude," Gaga explained before sitting down at the piano to play. "They thought it was shallow. But this shit is deep as fuck."

"I love you so much. You’re a star," she said to the crowd. "But the truth is, you gave birth to me." Read more...

As any true horror fan should know, in the movies, senses like sight, speech, and hearing sometimes work against characters.

In the 2016 film Hush, the protagonist, Maddie, can`t hear. The 2018 film A Quiet Place follows a family who must remain silent, as sound attracts deadly monsters. And in Netflix`s recently released hit Bird Box, the characters must wear blindfolds to avoid seeing threatening creatures with the potential to invade their minds.

All three are terrifying, slightly similar scenarios, so naturally the lovely people of the internet decided to lump them into one glorious meme. Read more...

Clark the bald eagle does what he wants when he wants, and after the national anthem performance at the Cotton Bowl, he wanted to fly into the stands.

Before the Clemson Tigers played Notre Dame in Arlington, Texas on Saturday, Clark was supposed to fly around the stadium, high above people`s heads. But instead, he went rogue and decided to perch on two unsuspecting fans.

Videos shared on social media show the stadium abuzz as Clark drops in on two Notre Dame fans at AT&T Stadium.

The first man, 42-year-old Albert Armas, chose to remain very still while the eagle perched on his shoulder, later explaining to Sports Illustrated that he was "scared crapless." Understandable! Read more...

In the days of cold, hard newsprint, only people who could draw were successful comic strip authors. In some cases, this resulted in comic strips that had very nice pictures, but weren`t all that funny (cough, Blondie). Thankfully, the internet has taught us not to accept an inferior form of comic artistry, but a more flexible one.

Comic strip enthusiasts who want funny but don`t care about pretty drawing can have their strips, those who want artistry have theirs, and even those with very specific tastes can find something just right.

The best part about these developments is that they allow you, regardless of any talent as an artist or comedian, to create your very own comic strip. Depending on what you`re going for, you can use one of these four sites to help you do it. Read more...

Since the Sandra Bullock horror film Bird Box was released on Netflix on Dec. 21, it`s become the talk of Twitter.

According to Netflix, 45 million accounts watched the film in its first week, and while it`s likely no one truly understands the meaning of it, viewers are still searching for answers.

One of the movie`s main unsolved mysteries was what the heck the monsters, or dark creatures responsible for the worldwide mass suicide, looked like. And while we can`t show you, in an interview with Bloody Disgusting, the cast describes the creatures perfectly.

According to screenwriter Eric Heisserer, the monsters were almost shown on screen, but the decision was ultimately made to exclude them. Read more...

There are few things in life more annoying than having a song stuck in your head that you don’t know the lyrics to. It’s even worse when you don’t even know the title of the song or who the hell the artist is behind this banger. How are you supposed to stop singing gibberish to the tune of this track when you don’t know a single thing about it?

Thankfully, there are now quite a number of apps that help solve this conundrum. Using these tools, you’ll be able to identify the next song you come across and never awkwardly belt out nonsensical wrong lyrics ever again.

1. Shazam

What`s that song? Tap Shazam and it will listen in to whatever song is playing around you.

"New year, who dis?"

As we turn our calendars to January 2019, that`s a phrase you should be saying to some not-so-great trends and people who were popular in this medium-key trash year.

Before we say goodbye to 2018, let`s make an effort to start fresh by leaving behind a few negative memories and abandoning things that make life more unpleasant.

Not sure where to start? No worries! Here are 13 things you should consider leaving behind to start the year off on the right foot.

1. Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg

Each year, Japanese whalers haul hundreds of harpooned whales aboard their giant 8,145-ton vessel, the Nisshin Maru. And for decades, they`ve killed most of these whales in the open Antarctic seas, under the guise of performing scientific "research."

But now Japan is changing course, in a curious way.

On Wednesday Japan`s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga announced that the nation will retreat from killing whales in the Antarctic waters. Instead, the Japanese have dropped the pretense of hunting whales for research and say they will strictly hunt whales in waters around Japan — mostly for the whales` meat. Read more...

Even in a year that gave us peak Q Anon, this may be the most 2018 conspiracy theory ever. There are people online who believe Netflix used bot accounts to spread viral memes about its record hit movie Bird Box

This is One Good Thing, a weekly column where we tell you about one of the few nice things that happened this week.

Baths are an extremely overrated form of self-care: they`re often too warm, incredibly filthy, and loaded with foul bacteria.

Meanwhile, baths for nature`s most underrated animal, the capybara, provide plenty of soothing both for the animal and for the sad human voyeur.

I`m a particular fan of this video of capybaras soaking in a yuzu bath which went viral this week, and for which we should all be grateful.

Every year for the winter solstice, zookeepers at multiple zoos across Japan soak capybaras in yuzu baths. The tradition started at Izu Shaboten Zoo in 1996 and has since taken off, though the practice has been used as a way to ward off illness for centuries. Read more...

It may be a groundbreaking high-tech piece of TV entertainment, but the interactive Black Mirror movie Bandersnatch is off limits if you happen to be using the highest-rated high-tech TV setup.

That would be the Apple TV, the 4K model of which we recently rated not only the most essential set-top box but also the most ahead-of-the-pack product Apple currently makes. (Many users agreed.)

Bandersnatch is also unavailable on Google`s Chromecast and Amazon`s Fire Stick. Try to watch it on these platforms and what you`ll get instead of the two-plus hour storyline is a 2-minute supercut of Black Mirror characters from other episodes saying "sorry." What better way to really understand Elon Musk`s year as Tesla CEO than to look back at his Twitter. It`s been a bumpy and very busy year for the electric car executive. He went from the depths of despair to turning a profit for Tesla for the first time — with a few lawsuits and scathing news reports thrown in for good measure. He even took a few puffs of marijuana on a podcast.

His most famous tweet of 2018?

Am considering taking Tesla private at 420. Funding secured.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) August 7, 2018

That led to a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) lawsuit and possible criminal investigation. In his settlement (which cost him 20 million and Tesla another 20 million), he was removed as chairman of the board and his tweeting is now under close watch. That didn`t stop him from taunting the SEC. He remains CEO of Tesla. Read more...

If Black Mirror: Bandersnatch wasn`t unsettling or meta enough for you, the show`s team snuck in another layer of gameplay: an actual Tuckersoft Games website. You can peruse the company`s history (which you`ll be familiar with if you watched Bandersnatch) and explore its game titles – all of which reference other Black Mirror episodes.

Perhaps the sneakiest goody on the site is that you can actually play Nohzdyve, the game Colin (Will Poulter) is working on. But there`s a significant catch.

The .tap file containing the game can only be played by downloading a ZS Spectrum Emulator – a program that mimics the OS of a personal computer from the 1980s` Bandersnatch eraFuse, Qaop, or Speccy are some potential emulators, but they only work on certain computers or operating systems (one of the only Mac-compatible downloads I found wouldn`t open because it was from an unidentified developer). Netflix is notoriously cagey about audience statistics, but even the most secretive among us can`t help bragging sometimes.

A fight between a Roman and a Germanic warrior.

In the 5th century AD, the reign of the Roman Empire in the west came crashing down with a series of barbarian invasions. Visigoths, Franks, and other groups laid waste to the villas and cities of Gaul, Roman Spain, and Italy. Among them was a group referred to as the Suebi. The Suebi originated in a region east of the Rhine River in modern-day Germany. In the beginning of the 5th century AD, they invaded Gaul and may even have attempted to invade the British Isles; but the invasion that they are best known for is their invasion of north-western Spain. There, they carved out one of the first stable barbarian kingdoms within the boundaries of the former western Roman Empire. Their Spanish domain was also one of the first Germanic kingdoms to be ruled by a Christian monarch who believed in the Nicene Creed.

Origins of the Suebi

The Suebi are first mentioned by ancient writers around the 1st century BC as one of the tribes that Julius Caesar fought against in his campaign in Gaul. It is unclear whether the term referred to a specific Germanic people or if it was an umbrella term referring to several different Germanic tribes.

With the end of 2018 comes the near-certain reality that some critters, after millions of years of existence on Earth, are gone for good.

There`s little question that humanity`s continued exploitation of wild animals and the depletion of their habitats have left many species either clinging to existence, or at worst, extinct. Today`s extinctions are happening 100 to 1000 times faster than the expected, natural rate of die-offs. It`s grim.

The Facebook CEO published a roughly 1,000-word post on Dec. 28 detailing his company`s various wins over the course of 2018 that, while admittedly helpfully informing the most oblivious of readers that there is still work to be done, seems completely at odds with how the rest of the world views Facebook`s 2018.
