Facebook isn`t the only company side-stepping Apple`s developer policies in order to conduct paid "research" on people`s browsing habits.

Now, TechCrunch reports that Google has also been conducting paid research on people`s internet habits through a VPN app called "Screenwise," which also appears to circumvent Apple`s developer policies.

The story comes just one day after the publication reported on a shady program called Facebook Research, which used a rebranded version of the social network`s banned VPN app to study users` internet habits. The report resulted in Apple revoking Facebook`s Enterprise Certificate, effectively bricking all of the company`s internal apps.  Read more...

It`s been a wild 24 hours at Facebook HQ, and employees are not handling it well.

Following a blockbuster Jan. 29 report from TechCrunch detailing how Facebook paid teens to spy on their smartphones, and the subsequent backlash from Apple, employees of the social media giant have taken to the anonymous workplace discussion app Blind to vent. And oh boy, is it ugly.

For those unfamiliar with Blind, the app is designed to allow employees of major companies to semi-anonymously discuss the ins and outs of their workplaces. An employee of, say, Facebook, uses their corporate email address to confirm that they do in fact work there, and then is allowed to post on app message boards — but the app doesn`t force them to confirm their title or other job details. Each post from a Facebook employee is marked as such. Likewise, any post from an Apple employee is clearly labeled as coming from an Apple employee.  Read more...

TikTok is on the rise two years after Vine`s tragic demise, but don`t expect it to fill the void that Vine left. That`s OK! The absolute chaos that TikTok embodies is exactly what we need in 2019.

If you`ve been spending time outside like a functional human and have no idea what TikTok is, here`s a rundown: The app was formerly known as Musical.ly, a platform dominated by preteens lip-syncing to uncomfortably suggestive choreography. In August 2018, the app was bought by ByteDance and merged with its app TikTok.

In the months since, the app has spawned increasingly bizarre — but hilarious — 15-second videos, from gummy bears serenading each other with Adele`s "Someone Like You" to teens flexing their makeup skills on literal potatoes. TikTok users aspire to get a coveted feature on the apps "For You" page, which is basically a scroll-through version of Instagram`s "Explore" tab.  Read more...

One of the biggest sports months of the year is almost here, and you know what that means:

It`s time for the Puppy Bowl and the Kitten Bowl!

Cat people and dog people alike can come together to appreciate fur babies of all kinds — as well as the world record of most animal puns used in a single hour, probably — thanks to Animal Planet and the Hallmark channel`s super cute programming that`s meant to be an antidote to the Super Bowl on Feb. 3. And while cable still dominates when it comes to the big game, streaming is where it’s at for the pupperinos and kitty quarterbacks.

If you don`t have cable or even a TV, don`t worry — we dug around to find the streaming services that offer Animal Planet, Hallmark Channel, or both. Just sign up for a free trial, soak in the cuteness, and cancel before you`re charged. It`s the purrfect plan.  Read more...

Research shows that asking someone if they`re suicidal doesn`t make them more likely to attempt suicide. Still, starting that conversation can feel intimidating for people worried about offending or embarrassing a loved one.

That`s why Crisis Text Line, a free, nonprofit emotional support texting service, has released new data suggesting that one way of framing that question is more effective than another.

After using artificial intelligence to analyze its dataset of 75 million text messages, collected since the service`s launch in 2013, Crisis Text Line found that assessing suicide risk with an "expression of care" was most likely to reduce a texter`s suicidal feelings.  Read more...

One of the reasons Pete Davidson`s tumultuous 2018 was so surprising is that, well, we`re not used to Pete Davidson being surprising. Even on Saturday Night Live, a show that delights in pushing its actors into ever-stranger scenarios, he tends to play variations on a type: the young slacker who meets all of life`s complications with an indifferent shrug and an oblivious smile.

Naturally, Big Time Adolescence finds him playing basically that character, yet again. This time, however, it`s played with enough nuance to suggest there`s more to Davidson than that schtick.

All across the Midwest this week, people are extremely cold — extremely cold and extremely bored.

Temperatures dropped as low as minus-60 Farenheit in parts of the Midwest on Wednesday, forcing schools to close and sequestering workers in their homes. To combat their cabin fever, some folks have started stepping out of their homes for a brief second to boiling hot water into the frigid air.

Of course the water, once tossed into the wind, quickly solidifies and turns into snow.

It`s actually way more entertaining than it sounds. I`m dead on the inside, and I`ll still watch this middle school science class trick any day: Read more...

Wow, it`s almost like Trump made a promise the real world can`t support.

In 2017, Chinese Apple supplier Foxconn broke ground on a factory in Wisconsin that it said would bring 13,000 manufacturing jobs to the US. President Trump even marked the occasion with a White House ceremony to hail his ability to return blue collar jobs to the midwest.

Now, Reuters reports that Foxconn is reconsidering plans for its Wisconsin plant.

Facebook and Apple are butting heads again thanks to the social network’s shady “Research” app.

Apple has revoked the certificate that enables Facebook to distribute the app via Apple’s Enterprise Certificate Program, according to Recode. This effectively bans Facebook’s Research app, which was first uncovered by Techcrunch on Tuesday.

Facebook had said it would be removing the iOS app from its program, but it looks as if Apple beat them to it.

According to The Verge, Apple’s ban has also affected all of Facebook’s internal use and pre-release beta iOS applications for not only Facebook, but Instagram and WhatsApp as well. Read more...

The barrage of bad news for the iPhone keeps coming.

Reuters has published a semi-worrisome report about how a team of former U.S. intelligence agents working for the UAE used a cyber tool called Karma to spy on iPhones used by "activists, diplomats and rival foreign leaders" simply by "uploading phone numbers or email accounts into an automated targeting system."

Karma reportedly allowed the UAE to "monitor hundreds of targets beginning in 2016, from the Emir of Qatar and a senior Turkish official to a Nobel Peace laureate human-rights activist in Yemen." Read more...

Parts of the Midwest are experiencing the coldest temperatures in 20 years this week as the polar vortex takes hold.

The USPS has partially halted service. In some places, it`s possible to get frostbite after only a few minutes of skin exposure.

Data Privacy Day has only just been and gone, so you really have no excuse to not have data protection and cyber security at the forefront of your mind.

There are a lot of VPN services out there that make a whole lot of promises regarding your online privacy, and it can feel impossible to pick one. You should though, because staying safe online is always the number one priority, and besides, most of these services include a money-back guarantee.

We aren`t picking sides here, but if you are looking for a VPN with a money-back guarantee at a great price, then PureVPN should be something to consider. This service would normally cost £8.37 a month, but PureVPN is now offering its one-year plan at a heavily reduced rate. You can now secure the service for as little as £2.26 a month for a year. That`s a huge 73% reduction on list price. And it includes a 31-day money-back guarantee as the cherry on the cake. Read more...

Not all tattoos turn out as expected. Ariana Grande knows this to be true, as the singer just experienced a pretty hilarious tattoo fail firsthand.

Grande planned to get the title of her latest single, "7 Rings," tattooed on her palm in Japanese, but after sharing a photo of the new ink on Instagram she learned that isn`t exactly the translation.

Instead, Grande`s newest tattoo says "shichirin,"  which is a small Japanese barbecue grill. Whoops!

for those who are confused, ariana grande got a tattoo on her hand in japanese intended to spell out “7 rings” and posted it on instagram (now deleted), but japanese people in the comments started saying how the REAL translation is bbq grill pic.twitter.com/rF0NvEa9Yv

Have you ever met someone who`s just naturally happy, like, all the time? Mysterious creatures, those folks. And sure, these people can come off as a bit naïve sometimes, but admit it: There`s always a part of you that`s thinking, "What are they doing that I`m not?"

They say sex sells itself, but vibrators? Not so much. In fact, shopping around for the just-right "personal massager" can be intimidating as hell. It’s definitely not a task to take lightly — after all, you’re buying something that’ll go inside, around, and on top of all your most intimate nooks and crannies. You want to make sure it’ll get you off, obviously, but you also want to make sure it’s a high quality product that’s easy to clean.

As with any other sex toys, you need to do some homework before plunking down your credit card for the vibe of your dreams. Step one, of course, is deciding what kind of vibrator you prefer: Do you want a rabbit vibrator, classic vibrator, or bullet vibrator? Are wand vibrators up your alley, or do you prefer a device geared toward G-spot stimulation? How much do you care about vibration speeds and patterns? Are couples vibrators in the mix? How about a clitoral vibrator that imitates oral sex? Are you OK with a battery-operated vibrator, or do you want one that comes with a remote control?  Read more...

You`d be surprised just how little some men know about women`s bodies.

Jimmy Kimmel just proved himself completely clueless when it comes to the concept of menopause, something that affects literally half the population.

Luckily, How To Get Away With Murder star and general queen Viola Davis was there to educate the clueless host – after giving him a solid 10 seconds of silence.

"You know what? Menopause is hell, Jimmy," Davis said.  Read more...

You might not know this, but even massive celebrities have major fangirl moments.

Take Richard E. Grant, for instance, who tweeted a letter he`d penned at age 14 to his idol, Barbra Streisand, alongside a picture of himself posing outside her house.

What followed was the most delightfully pure exchange between Streisand and "lifelong fan" Grant, who`s now 61 years old.

As a lifelong fan of someone you’ll understand what it meant for me to take this snap outside the home of @BarbraStreisand Asked Security for permission & he replied ‘It’s a public road, but thanks for asking’ Wrote her this letter when I was 14. My wife is very understanding! pic.twitter.com/3SohXKpgZT

Millennials have made headlines for everything from their tendency to job-hop to their fondness for avocados. There’s a reason the media has a laser-focus on millennial habits: In the not-too-distant future, the spending power of this avocado-loving generation has significant implications for governments, NGOs, and businesses the world over.

Ever wondered what the contents of a celebrity`s cell phone might be? Well, now you know. Or at least, now you know the most recent text, photo, and the last song played on the phone of one celebrity in particular.

In the game above, James Corden uses those three clues to interrogate actors Charlie Day, Regina Hall, and Eugene Levy, with the aim of correctly guessing who the mystery phone in question belongs to.

We won`t say who whose phone it is here — you`ll have to watch the video for that — but we will say this: Corden ends up guessing wrong. Read more...

Love or hate it, Valentine’s Day is the ideal time to right the gift-giving wrongs of the holidays. Were you sure your husband would love that faux-vintage, Bluetooth-compatible turntable, only to find out later that what he really wanted was a weighted blanket? Did you misinterpret his months of hint-dropping about homebrewing, ponying up for the perfect craft beer kit, when he was actually talking about kombucha?

Besides serving as an opportunity to fulfill leftover holiday wishes, Valentine`s Day is also a great time to make your partner feel loved. After all, nailing the perfect gift means not only showing that you’ve been listening, but really reading between the lines. The best gifts are often items the recipient wouldn’t necessarily buy for themselves, or even better—things they didn’t even know they wanted in the first placeRead more...

Those rumors that Samsung`s Galaxy S10 might come with a 1TB storage option may just be true.

Samsung announced on Tuesday that it`s started to mass-produce its 1TB Universal Flash Storage (eUFS), the type that`ll be used in smartphones of the future.

It took Samsung just four years to bring eUFS from 128GB to 1TB, the company said in a press release, while keeping it tiny enough to use in a smartphone.

For an idea of just how much storage this is, Samsung says it`ll be enough to store 260 10-minute 4K videos. While that actually doesn`t sound that amazing, Samsung points out that your typical 64GB smartphone can only store 13 such videos. Read more...

Since parts of the American Midwest are currently experiencing the lowest temperatures in two decades, global warming is not really a thing, right?

Wrong. So, so wrong. But this nonetheless seems to be U.S. president Donald Trump`s understanding of what climate change is.

The president recently tweeted that global warming (or, in Trump`s spelling, "waming") should "come back fast," as if it`s gone anywhere.

On Jimmy Kimmel Live, host Jimmy Kimmel decided to educate the president on his climate knowledge, and he had some pretty adorable children break it down so even Trump would understand. Read more...

Apple`s iPhone revenue has plunged in the December quarter, and the company is ready to make some changes.

According to CEO Tim Cook, Apple will reduce prices of the iPhone in markets where local currencies have weakened against the dollar.

“As we’ve gotten into January and assessed the macroeconomic condition in some of those markets, we’ve decided to go back to more commensurate with what our local prices were a year ago in hopes of helping the sales in those areas,” Cook told Reuters (via The Next Web).

If you`ve never bought an iPhone outside of the U.S., you may not be aware of just how staggering the price difference is. I`ve been pointing it out over and over and over — it`s hard to justify spending 1,760 for a maxed-out iPhone XS (UK pricing at launch) when the exact same model costs 1,349 in the U.S. And it`s even harder in a country like Hungary, where the price is even higher and the average customer`s purchasing power is far lower than in the U.S.  Read more...

Trump tweeted about global warming again.

On Monday night, the president said on Twitter that he wanted global warming wanted to "come back fast," because of the freezing temperatures that have hit the midwest. Quick to correct him, and his spelling of "global waming," however, was Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night.

"These temperatures are actually caused by global `waming` sir. Polar vortex breaks up and dips out, it`s all predicted," he said. "Besides, just because it`s cold now, it doesn`t mean climate change is a myth."

Colbert turned the conversation to things that Trump wishes weren`t real, like the Mueller investigation, and a nervy Matthew Whitaker.  Read more...

Tesla is tweaking its Model X and Model S lineup again.

As spotted by Electrek, the automaker has launched cheaper versions of its Model X and Model S with a 100kWh battery pack, now that you can`t buy the 75kWh iteration.

It`s now selling the Model S for 85,000, with its range locked by software to 310 miles (498 kilometres). The Model X goes for 88,000, with a 270-mile (434-kilometre) range.

Ever watchful of its competitors (and not so concerned about your privacy), Facebook has been paying people so it can keep tabs on their phone and internet usage.

As unearthed by TechCrunch, the research program dubbed "Project Atlas" sought users who would be willing to install an app that gave Facebook unfettered access to their iOS or Android phones for 20 a month, plus referral fees.

Facebook recruited users aged 13-35 years old via beta testing services like Applause, BetaBound and uTest, with the latter company running ads for a "paid social media research study" on Instagram and Snapchat. Read more...

It turns out Apple products are good for more than just spying on people

In an otherwise dreary Jan. 29 earnings call, Apple executives had one standout bit of cheery news for wary investors: Apple News supposedly has the largest audience of any news app. Specifically, according to Apple, the service has 85 million monthly active users.

That number, up from 70 million unique users in 2016, paints a picture of a growing service that is slowly rising to challenge Facebook`s hold on the media ecosystem. But it still has a long way to go before it manages to dethrone the Boy King of Silicon Valley.  Read more...
