  • Google has reportedly agreed to pay a fine of between 150 and 200 million to the Federal Trade Commission as a part of a settlement agreement.
  • FTC officials have been investigating whether YouTube violated children`s privacy laws with its business practices.

Google will reportedly pay a fine of between 150 and 200 million to the Federal Trade Commission as a part of a settlement agreement. The FTC has investigating whether YouTube violated children`s privacy laws with its data collection practices, and it could implement additional regulations as a part of the settlement.

A report from Politico said FTC commissioners voted 3 to 2, along party lines, to approve the settlement, which is subject to review by the Department of Justice.

The FTC levied a 5 billion fine against Facebook for privacy violations in July, and TikTok, a popular video sharing app, paid a 5.7 million fine in February for collecting data from children without requesting permission from parents.

The Children`s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) requires companies to request parental consent before collecting personal data from users under the age of 13. In June, US Senator Edward Markey asked for the FTC to hold YouTube accountable for potential violations of COPPA, and laid out a series of changes to ensure that the company was complying with federal regulations.

YouTube recently launched a web portal for YouTube Kids, which could mark a major shift for separating children`s content on the world`s largest video streaming platform. Reports from Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal in June said YouTube was considering shifting all children`s content to YouTube Kids, which has existed for several years as a standalone, secondary app with increased levels of moderation.

Though YouTube Kids has existed as an app since 2015, YouTube has never been a separate website designed for children. Youtubekids.com launched earlier this week, and walks parents through the process of establishing parental controls and security measures for their children.

YouTube will also consider disabling the platform`s recommendation feature for children`s programming and stop using targetted ads based on data collected from young users, according to a recent report.

NOW WATCH: The incredible story behind Slack, the app that`s taken over offices everywhere

Jack Dorsey

  • Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey`s account (@jack) was hacked on Friday afternoon, Twitter`s official communications account confirmed at 4:05 PM EST.
  • A group that identified itself as the "Chuckling Squad," the same hackers that have targeted famous YouTubers, including James Charles and Shane Dawson, says it acquired access to Dorsey`s account.
  • The hackers tweeted out racial and anti-Semitic slurs and more than a dozen tweets and retweets over a 20-minute period before Twitter responded.
  • At 5:22 PM EST, Twitter`s communications team said that Dorsey`s account had been "secured," and that "there is no indication that Twitter`s systems have been compromised."
  • Here`s what we know about the hack so far.

The hack of @jack lasted for under 30 minutes on Friday afternoon.

Starting at 3:44 PM EST, Twitter founder and CEO Jack Dorsey`s official account, @jack, began tweeting out offensive messages and retweeting tweets associated with the "Chuckling Squad," a group of hackers that targeted YouTubers over the past two weeks.

In just 20 minutes, before Twitter`s official communications account confirmed the hack, Dorsey`s account tweeted racial slurs, anti-Semitic tweets, and more offensive content before all the tweets and retweets were eventually removed.

The group also shared a link to a Discord server it has commandeered since the last high-profile account hack it claimed to be behind, but Discord deleted the associated server quickly after Dorsey`s account tweeted about it.

The hacking group that identified itself as taking over Dorsey`s account has previously targeted YouTubers, including James Charles.

Before claiming ownership over Dorsey`s account hack, the "Chuckling Squad," as it identifies itself, hacked famous YouTubers. James Charles, Shane Dawson, King Bach, Etika, and Amanda Cerny were all hacked in the past two weeks.

Charles, the most recent hack, alleged in a tweet threatening legal action that AT&T was to blame for the "Chuckling Squad" gaining access to his account.

Twitter has yet to confirm who hacked Dorsey`s account or how, but while it was hacked, Dorsey`s account tweeted the link to the same Discord server whose admin posted screenshots from inside deceased YouTuber Etika`s Google Mail account.

Read more: James Charles is the latest YouTuber to get hacked on Twitter by the same group or person that goes by `chuckling`

Tweets sent while Dorsey`s account was hacked seemingly used the service "Cloudhopper," a third-party service.

Dorsey has sent tweets before using Cloudhopper, an app Twitter acquired in 2010 that uses SMS, the most widely used type of text messaging. Cloudhopper is no longer available to the public for use, though Dorsey tweeted from Cloudhopper before his interview with Joe Rogan in February.

When the "Chuckling Squad" targeted YouTubers, it was rumored that the hackers were calling AT&T, pretending to be their targets, and requesting a SIM card swap, which would give them access to their target`s text messaging.

Some were quick to joke and speculate that Dorsey and members of his team may be at the Burning Man music festival.

To be clear, there is zero evidence Jack Dorsey has ever attended Burning Man or is currently at the desert-based gathering. But in the wake of his account`s hacking, people were quick to joke and speculate that Dorsey or members of his security team were at Burning Man, with the joke being that it would be the definition of an inopportune place to handle such a time-sensitive situation.

Previously, Dorsey has tweeted how much he enjoys San Francisco when Burning Man attendees are gone, leaving the city slightly less crowded. On August 31, 2010, he tweeted "Definitely one of my favorite weeks in SF. All the Burning Man folks are emptying out of the city, and it`s getting ever warmer."

Twitter says Dorsey`s account is now secure.

At 5:22 PM ET on Friday, Twitter`s communications team tweeted out that Dorsey`s account was secure, and that Twitter`s investigation into the matter had not surfaced any evidence to suggest Twitter`s systems were compromised.

BuzzFeed News senior tech reporter Ryan Mac also tweeted that he had spoken with a former Twitter employee since Dorsey`s hacking who said the incident should be embarassing for the CEO, who has been advised to use a more secure laptop to work in the past (as opposed to his iPhone), and who has refused.

Hong Kong police arrested a number of prominent pro-democracy activists including Joshua Wong and three lawmakers on Friday, seeking to rein in protests that have plunged the city into its worst political crisis for decades.

  • Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey`s Twitter account (@Jack) was hacked on Friday afternoon.
  • The compromised account identified the source of the hack as a group known as the Chuckling Squad, and posted multiple offensive messages starting at 3:44 p.m ET, including racial slurs directed at African Americans.
  • It took Twitter about 15 minutes to respond to the hack, during which more than a dozen tweets and re-tweets were sent.
  • Visit Business Insider`s homepage for more stories.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey`s account was apparently hacked by a group called the Chuckling Squad on Friday afternoon.

The hacker posted a series of offensive messages from Dorsey`s including racial slurs and anti-Semitism.

It took Twitter approximately 15 minutes to delete the inappropriate tweets from Dorsey`s account, and it`s still not clear how the hackers gained access. The group shared also a link to a Discord messaging server, but Discord deleted the server within minutes.

The hacked tweets were apparently sent using an SMS messaging service called Cloudhopper. Twitter acquired Cloudhopper in 2010 but the service is no longer available to the public. However Dorsey apparently used a version of the service earlier this year, though most of his tweets are sent from an iPhone.

Twitter said employees are aware of the hack and the company is investigating the source.

The downfall of MoviePass continues.

This week, the New York City-based movie-ticket subscription service laid off at least seven employees, including the office manager, members of the marketing department, and the two-person exhibitor relations team, multiple sources close to the company told Business Insider.

MoviePass did not respond to a request for comment for this story.

The firing of the exhibitor relations team, whose sole purpose was to build relationships with movie theaters, is a major loss for a company that needs connections with movie theaters for discounts on bulk tickets, as well as advertising and marketing deals.

The MoviePass staff is now down to around 12 full-time employees, one source close to the company said. There are also a few consultants who work for the company. At the company`s height in 2017, the staff numbered around 40.

Since then, the company has fallen on hard times.

MoviePass` parent company, Helios and Matheson Analytics, blew through hundreds of millions of dollars trying to keep MoviePass afloat and was delisted from the Nasdaq in February after its stock had been trading below 1 for months. To curb its cash burn, MoviePass added unpopular restrictions to its app, which contributed to a drastic fall in subscriber count. Internal data that Business Insider obtained in April showed MoviePass` number of subscribers had fallen from over 3 million to about 225,000.

During MoviePass` downward spiral, CEO Mitch Lowe used questionable tactics to keep the company going, like blocking subscribers out of their accounts, according to multiple inside sources who Business Insider spoke to during a four-month investigation into the company`s practices published in August.

On July 4, MoviePass shut down, citing "technical problems." Since then, the service has gradually come back online for some subscribers. In early August, a MoviePass spokesperson told Business Insider that MoviePass was available for 40% of subscribers.

  • Don`t panic if your Apple Watch won`t turn on; there are several reasons why your Watch might not turn on, and most of them are easy to fix.
  • A drained battery is a common reason for an Apple Watch not to turn on; make sure you try a different charging cable and charger before assuming the issue is the Watch itself.
  • Various settings can make an Apple Watch appear dead or frozen, when in reality the Watch is doing exactly what it is supposed to.
  • Visit Business Insider`s homepage for more stories.

An Apple Watch that won`t turn on is about as useful as a pen with no ink, the difference being that the smartwatch probably cost you 200 or more.

But don`t worry — there are many reasons why an Apple Watch screen might not be turning on, and most of them have a simple fix.

Here we`ll go through four of the most common reasons an Apple Watch won`t turn on, and how to fix the problems. If none of these work, then you likely have a hardware issue that you won`t be able to fix yourself, but that might be covered by your warranty.

So even if none of these fixes get your Apple Watch turned on again, don`t toss the thing out. Bring it to the Apple Store for a professional inspection.

Check the battery, and check your Apple Watch charger

One common reason an Apple Watch won`t turn on is simply that the battery is dead. Connect the Watch to its charger, and if that doesn`t work, make sure you try a different charging cable and charger to see if your charger is faulty.

If your Apple Watch is still unresponsive after you try to power it with several different chargers, then move on to the next solution.

Perform a force restart

Your Apple Watch may be frozen. Forcing it to restart can unfreeze the operating system and get things working again.

Press and hold the two buttons (the larger, circular Digital Crown and the smaller oblong Side Button) simultaneously for 10 to 15 seconds.

After the Apple logo appears, release the buttons and wait another few seconds. When the watch turns back on, it should work smoothly again.

Read more: How to turn your Apple Watch on and off, or force-restart it for troubleshooting

Turn off Power Reserve mode

Your Apple Watch has a Power Reserve setting that, as the name implies, saves power. In this mode, only the time will display, and the watch will not unlock.

To exit this mode, press and hold the Side Button (thinner, oblong) for about 7 to 10 seconds. When the Apple logo appears, the watch is rebooting into its regular mode.

Turn off the Screen Curtain

The Screen Curtain mode keeps your Apple Watch`s face darkened even when it`s operating normally, only allowing interaction via voice.

To turn off the Screen Curtain, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, then go to the General tab. From there, tap "Accessibility," then go to "VoiceOver." Finally, toggle Screen Curtain off (the button will be on the left).

The Apple Watch should work normally again.

NOW WATCH: How Area 51 became the center of alien conspiracy theories

Screen Shot 2019 08 30 at 2.30.00 PM

  • President Donald Trump looks to have shared a photograph of an intelligence briefing that could have exposed US military secrets to the world while taunting Iran over Twitter.
  • The image Trump shares appears lifted from an intelligence briefing and is much more high-resolution than anything commercial satellite image providers have produced.
  • At first blush, it looks like someone took a photo of this surveillance product with a smartphone, rather than being prepared by the intelligence community.
  • The Kennedy administration famously presented spy plane images showing Russian nuclear missiles in Cuba. But it would be highly unusual for a president to declassify an image captured by a non-public military asset to mock another country.

President Donald Trump looks to have shared a photograph of an intelligence briefing that could have exposed US military secrets to the world while taunting Iran over Twitter.

Iran on Thursday suffered a failure of a satellite launch vehicle that blew up on the ground. Immediately after the test, commercial satellites photographed the wreckage and sold the images to civilian analysts.

But on Friday, Trump shared an image that put the commercial satellite photography to shame. Trump`s photo looks like it was snapped from a large print out of a very detailed close up of the launch. The notations and presentation of the image suggests it likely comes from US intelligence services, possibly in a briefing for the president.

In releasing the high-res image, Trump noted Iran had suffered a "catastrophic accident," adding: "I wish Iran best wishes and good luck in determining what happened at Site One."

Images shared on Wednesday were much more distant and less detailed.

So Trump`s photo revealed either that the US has fantastic satellite photography capabilities, far beyond what Iran, or even US civilians can get their hands on, or that the US had a drone close enough to take pictures.

However, the extreme angle of the picture makes it look like it wasn`t taken from space, but rather from an aircraft.

The launch took place at the Imam Khomeini Space Center North West of Tehran. This location is more than 120 miles from Iran`s nearest border. If a drone took the photo, it was either flying over Iranian airspace undetected or somehow able to take a great picture from 120 miles away.

Both of those situations involving drone photography would be big news.

"I think I just got flexed on by the president," David Schmerler, a leading expert on open source imagery analysis, told Business Insider of the image. Schmerler had spent hours the night before analyzing the widely available pictures of the failed launch, but was blown away by the quality of Trump`s image.

"I`ve never seen anything like this before," he said. "I know that [the US military has] amazing capabilities, but I don`t know what this is."

Trump, as president, has the power to easily declassify photos and documents, such as the picture of Iran`s failed launch.

But the photo does not look like it was prepared by US intelligence agents. Instead, a camera flash can be seen on the surface of the image, which was most likely a printout. The image may also show the shadow of the photographer.

It would be highly unusual for a president to declassify an image captured by a non-public military asset to mock another country.

Business Insider has reached out to several open source image analysts to see what else this photo may tell us about the US`s activity in surveilling Iran and will update the post with any further revelations.

Quartz has lost five key people in the past few months, including some who were central to its revenue-diversification efforts.

Those helping lead Quartz`s diversification efforts who left were Sam Grobart, who was in charge of Quartz`s fledgling membership program, and his deputy, Sarah Kessler.

Solana Pyne, Quartz`s head of video, which was used to help drive membership, and Sari Zeidler, the head of growth, also left.

Editorial people who left included Indrani Sen, who was head of Quartz`s lifestyle content, Quartzy, which insiders said was a heavy traffic driver.

Read more: Verizon Media revealed splashy plans for Yahoo Finance and Yahoo Sports. Here`s what advertisers are saying about it.

In addition, earlier in the year, Quartz lost its chief revenue officer, Joy Robins, who went to The Washington Post, and Adam Pasick, who headed editorial for the app, to The New York Times.

Launched in 2012, the business-news publication was widely admired as a mobile-first, digital-only outlet for global business people. It was known for experimenting with new ways to deliver news through chat bots and putting the user first with tightly written articles and so-called native ads that resembled articles, which were in place of annoying banner ads.

But Quartz has undergone massive changes since it was sold in July 2018 by Atlantic Media to Uzabase, a Tokyo-based public media company.

The new company moved quickly to diversify Quartz`s revenue with a 100-a-year membership program that promised access to exclusive in-depth story packages called Field Guides, events, and conference calls with reporters. Quartz introduced a new app that featured business big shots like Beth Comstock and Roger McNamee, who would comment on stories in the app. It laid off 11 business-side people in two rounds this year.

Six months after rolling out the membership program, Quartz, which had been free for most of its existence, put up a metered paywall to encourage membership sign-ups.

A lot of publishers are pivoting to paywalls and memberships to allay their reliance on advertising revenue, but the jury`s out on how many will be able to generate meaningful revenue this way.

Some former employees said the membership program felt rushed

Some former Quartz employees said they were unsure what the strategy behind the membership program was and said that it felt rushed.

Quartz co-CEO Jay Lauf told Business Insider that the recent departures would be replaced by new hires or promotions from within. He said he couldn`t give financial figures now that Quartz was part of a public company, but that he was "pleased" with the results of the membership program so far.

"Our approach, which is member-specific content and access to our journalists and the community, are things we`re encouraged by," he said.

Overall, he said, Quartz`s business was strong. "Uzabase has been a really supportive and energetic new owner. They`ve been investing in Quartz."

NOW WATCH: This Facebook exec cofounded and then got fired from Pets.com. Here`s why she is no longer hiding from this failure.

Apple Watch 2

While a full charge on your Apple Watch is supposed to last roughly 18 hours, it can often be considerably less than that, especially if you receive regular notifications and alerts, track lengthy workouts, or use apps a lot on the device.

There`s nothing more frustrating than seeing that low battery alert when you swore you only charged it a few hours ago, but it`s pretty much a given if you use your device a lot.

Thankfully, there are some things you can do to increase the amount of time your battery lasts. Although these methods aren`t guaranteed to drastically improve your battery life, they are several of the best options you have to try and save battery.

Here are just a few battery-saving options for your Apple Watch

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Apple Watch Series 4 (From 399 at Best Buy)

SEE ALSO: The best smartwatches you can buy

Use a darker watch face

Since black pixels require less energy than other colors on OLED screens, it makes sense that using a darker watch face would help preserve your Apple Watch`s battery.

To change your watch face, open the Watch app on your iPhone and under the Face Gallery tab, choose your desired watch face by tapping the Add option.

Then, tap the My Watch option on the menu across the bottom of your screen and, under My Faces, choose your desired face.

Adjust your screen brightness

Just as your screen brightness can affect battery life on your iPhone, the same is true of the Apple Watch

Lower your screen brightness by tapping the Settings app directly on your watch or selecting Brightness & Text Size under the My Watch tab in the Watch app.

Use the slider to adjust the brightness of your Apple Watch`s screen, moving it to the left to reduce it.

Reduce the number of notifications you receive

Constantly having your Apple Watch`s screen light up with new notifications can create a real drain on battery life. You can limit this by reducing the number of notifications you receive.

To do this, open the Watch app on your iPhone and choose the Notifications option under My Watch. From there, you can individually decrease or disable notifications for each app by tapping on them one by one.

Disable the wrist raise feature

Apple Watch`s wrist raise feature turns on the screen every time you lift your wrist, showing you the time and any other notifications that may have popped up. It can be convenient, sure, but it can also drain your battery.

To turn this off, navigate to the Settings app on either your watch or on the Watch app on your iPhone. Go to Settings, then General, then Wake Screen.

Here, you can disable the Wake Screen on Wrist Raise and Wake Screen on Crown Up features by toggling the green button to the right of each option.

Turn on Power Reserve mode

While this isn`t necessarily the most convenient option for saving your watch`s battery, it`s certainly the most effective. Turning on Power Reserve mode will disable any and all notifications and alerts on the device as well as shutting down every other feature.

Basically, it will become a glorified regular watch, only displaying the time. To enable this, swipe up on your watch`s home screen to reveal the Glances. Tap the power percentage button and then, under the percentage of battery remaining, slide the Power Reserve button to the right to enable it.

  • The device is also super modern looking with its edge-to-edge screen and slim bezels.
  • For a limited time, the iPad Pro is on sale for 50 to 399 off depending on which model you choose.
  • The 1TB model is the one that`s 399 off, so it`s still a bit pricey with its 1,149.99 sale price.
  • However, you can get the 64GB version for 125 off, which brings the price down to 674.
  • The 512GB model is also 150 off, so you`ll pay 999.99. The 256GB version has the lowest discount of 50, bringing the price down to 899.

The iPad Pro is largely considered to be the best high-end tablet you can buy. The device is sleek, modern, and ultra powerful, making it a great choice for those who want a tablet that can replace their laptop or graphic designers who like the idea of using the Apple Pencil. And now, the 11-inch iPad Pro is available at a massive discount straight from Amazon.

The 1TB model is getting the biggest discount, but it`s also the most expensive model, so you`ll still pay a lot. However, getting 399 off an iPad is really rare, and 1,149.99 is a solid sale price for that particular version of the Pro.

If you don`t want so much storage, you can get the 64GB base model for 125 off, which brings the price down to 674. The 512GB model is 150 off, too, if you want something more in between. You`ll pay 999.99 for that version.

The 256GB version has the lowest discount of 50, but the price is decent at 899. In the end, it depends on how much you want to spend and how much storage you`re willing to pay for to meet your needs.

There are a number of things that make the 11-inch iPad Pro such an awesome device. Notably, the device boasts a beautiful edge-to-edge screen with super-thin bezels, which helps make it much more modern. It also uses Apple`s Face ID for facial recognition, which makes unlocking the device easy.

Of course, it`s perhaps what`s under the hood that`s even more impressive. The device is powered by Apple`s A12X Bionic chip, which is the most powerful chip Apple has ever developed. It easily makes the device a laptop replacement in terms of raw performance.

On the bottom of the device, you`ll find a USB-C port, and you can use it to connect hard drives and other devices. The tablet will last 10 hours on a charge.

For this deal, you`ll get pretty massive discounts. The device is available in four storage amounts, from 64GB to 1TB — and depending on which amount of storage you want, you could get up to 399.01 off. That`s pretty huge. Even the base model is getting 125 off, which makes the tablet cheaper than ever.

Bang Bros. / Pornwikileaks hard drives

  • A website named PornWikiLeaks was set up with the specific purpose of revealing the names of actors involved in the pornography business.
  • This week, the site was abruptly shuttered and replaced with a message from the porn production company Bang Bros. stating it had been purchased with the intention of taking down the data.
  • "We have purchased this site with the intention of shutting it down and removing all information associated with it. There`s no catch. No hidden thing to getting your personal stuff off of it. We simply didn`t want it out there for the world to see anymore," the message says.
  • Visit Business Insider`s homepage for more stories.

On Wednesday, a website named PornWikiLeaks went offline and was replaced with a message: "We have purchased this site with the intention of shutting it down and removing all information associated with it," the message reads. "There`s no catch. No hidden thing to getting your personal stuff off of it. We simply didn`t want it out there for the world to see anymore."

In a surprising twist, the message is attributed to the porn production company Bang Bros. — a move intended to end PornWikiLeaks` distribution of "phone numbers, addresses, even family members names" of porn actors, according to the message.

PornWikiLeaks/Bang Bros. statement

According to a WHOIS registry of the site, registration was updated the same day that the statement attributed to Bang Bros. was posted: August 29.

In addition to the statement, a video was posted of computer hard drives labeled "pornwikileaks" being covered in lighter fluid and lit ablaze.

A number of questions remain in the wake of the site`s closure:

  • Who owned PornWikiLeaks, and who sold it to Bang Bros.?
  • Where are the hard drives from?
  • How much did it cost?
  • Did Bang Bros., itself a subsidiary of several layers of holding companies, always own PornWikiLeaks, and do this as a publicity stunt?

None of that is clear.

Swedish erotic film director Erika Lust highlighted the good and the potential bad in an email to Business Insider.

"Bang Bros.` decision to buy the site and remove all of the data was a brilliant move and a sign of solidarity with an industry that is stigmatized and heavily mistreated by society and media outlets. I applaud it. PornWikileaks was a disgusting website that endangered so many performers and other people working in the industry," Lust said.

"It`s important to be aware, though, that Bang Bros. is part of a big network which is owned by WGCZ S.R.O, which also owns tube sites like XVideos.com and Xnxx.com. Companies like WGCZ S.R.O and the Mindgeek conglomerate, owner of the very famous Pornhub, have achieved a monopoly through backward vertical integration and horizontal integration, by taking over the supply chain and production path of pornography. This has been detrimental and also very harmful to every single player in the industry destroying the livelihoods of performers and creators," she said.

Bang Bros. representatives did not respond to a request for comment as of publishing.

The majestic and mysterious Parthenon in Athens, Greece.

The Parthenon, proudly standing on the Athenian Acropolis, is considered by many historians and archaeologists alike as the undisputed symbol of Athenian democracy and the cradle of Western civilization.

The monument is also considered one of the finest buildings of all time by a large number of architects worldwide. It attracts millions of tourists each year and was designed by the most famous sculptor of antiquity, Phidias, while two of the most influential architects ever, Ictinus and Callicrates, supervised the practical construction work of the temple.

fitbit charge hr

Fibit didn`t make it easy to turn most of their trackers off. And that makes sense, as a Fitbit can only do its job — namely, tracking all your biometric data — if it`s actively running.

But should you want to turn off a Fitbit Charge HR, whether to save battery, to comply with security regulations, or because you simply don`t want it tracking you for a while, you can force a Charge HR to power down.

Turning off a Fitbit Charge HR can also help fix it when the device begins to lag or has connectivity issues. If this is the case, you can also try giving it a quick restart.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

How to turn off a Fitbit Charge HR

To turn a Fitbit Charge HR off, plug its power supply into the back of the tracker, then hold down the side button for 10 to 12 seconds.

Screen_Shot_2019 08 27_at_12_06_13_PM

The screen will go dark. The Fitbit is now off, and can be unplugged and set aside until you want to turn it back on, which you can do using the very same button.

How to restart a Fitbit Charge HR

If you just want to restart your Fitbit Charge HR, then connect it to its power supply, and hold its button until the tracker vibrates and displays an icon on the screen.

This means it has restarted, and should work properly.

Scheduled to take place from July 24 to August 9 2020 in Tokyo, the Summer Olympics is an upcoming multi-sport event which gathers competing athletes worldwide.

Following is a transcript of the video.

Abby Tang: There it goes! This thing is a tiny, unpredictable monster.

I`m Abby, and I have bitten my nails for my entire life. I`ve tried sitting on my hands, wearing that gross bitter nail polish, fake nails, dating a boy who cared about what my nails looked like, that didn`t work. I`ve tried everything. So, I`m gonna try wearing this Pavlok 2 bracelet to shock myself into giving up nail-biting. I`m hoping that this will at least decrease the rate in which I bite my nails, if not stop it completely.

Let`s check it out! Right off the bat, it looks like a Fitbit. Add a habit. We wanna stop nail-biting. And so, I can set it to vibrate every time I lift my hand to my mouth, or beep or zap me. We should probably make it zap me, right? `Cause that`s why we`re doing this. There it goes! Yup, when my finger goes to my mouth, it`s gonna zap me. I don`t like that at all. I`m gonna do this for the next two weeks. It`s day one of wearing the Pavlok 2. There it goes. It`s very excited to see me. I really, really wanna bite my nails right now. But I also don`t wanna be electrocuted. So, I guess this is a pretty good deterrent.

Bad. Unfair. But I haven`t bitten my nails, which is actually very impressive. I just don`t know how much credit I would give the bracelet. I never got used to it. It was an electric shock. Every time I was doing something, I got shocked probably 10 times as many times for things that weren`t biting my nails than were, because it just can`t tell a difference between when I`m touching my mouth and when I`m just having my hands at a vertical angle.

So, there`s a digital manual for this thing, but I might be old, I guess. I need my paper manual so that I can flip through it, really touch it, feel it, learn it. So, I haven`t accessed that. So I have no idea how to troubleshoot some of the glitches that I`m seeing, and I especially don`t know what the safety concerns for this guy are. I really wanna get the friend remote working because one of the things I was excited about with this wearable was other people holding me accountable. I had a few coworkers try this on.

Oh! Oh, I didn`t care for that at all! Ow!

The shock count is automatic, but the times-you-bite- your-nails count and the times-you-feel-like-you`re- going-to-bite-your-nails count you have to manually input yourself. And I don`t wanna do that. I`m a little lazy. I don`t have time. And then, the automatic one is also counting all the times that it shocks me for no reason. So, it`s a little inaccurate. I don`t really have a need for that part of the app. After we started this experiment, I saw an ad on Facebook saying that this thing will break a habit in one week. I`m still pretty focused on my fingers. I am very aware that I want to bite them. So, I don`t think my habit`s broken yet. Honestly, this thing is just reminding me that you don`t wanna bite your nails, you shouldn`t do that, you`re trying to break this habit, and so every time I feel it on my wrist, electrocuted or not, I am aware that I shouldn`t do this. So, I don`t think we need to shock ourselves.

No! More! Electricity! In my body! We`re done. I don`t think I used it right, but I used it successfully because I have fingernails. But I don`t think my brain was rewired, as the product promises. I think it was probably user error. There`s meditation involved, there`s, like, accountability activities, which are just, like, writing down the negatives and positives of doing your habit. I don`t need to do that; it should just be easier. I don`t think I would buy this. I don`t think it`s worth a purchase. It did work, but I don`t know how much credit I can give to the actual device as much as I can give to just having a reminder at all. So, I would just go to Michaels and buy a string.

FitBit Versa Lite

  • Most Fitbit devices automatically track your sleep with a combination of movement and heart-rate monitoring.
  • After syncing your Fitbit with the mobile app, you can review details about how you slept each day. It tracks your sleep stages, such as light, heavy, and REM sleep, and lets you compare your sleep performance over time.
  • You can use your Fitbit sleep data to look for ways to improve your sleep performance, or monitor sleep for changes in your sleep that you may want to discuss with your doctor.
  • Visit Business Insider`s homepage for more stories.

Most Fitbit activity monitors come with built-in sleep monitoring that works automatically — there`s no need to tell your Fitbit you`re going to bed, as it will just sense it.

Fitbit uses several methods to detect that you`re asleep. When you haven`t moved in about an hour, it assumes you`re asleep, but it confirms this by measuring small movements (like rolling over in your sleep) as well.

If there`s a heart rate monitor built into your Fitbit, it combines heart rate and movement data to develop a more accurate picture of your sleep cycle.

Fitbit doesn`t just track your overall sleep, but your sleep stages as well. A complete sleep cycle contains several stages, such as light sleep, deep sleep, and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep.

Certain Fitbits estimate these stages using "beat-to-beat changes in your heart rate." This is called heart rate variability (HRV), which is known to vary between light, deep, and REM sleep.

How to check your Fitbit sleep statistics

After you wake in the morning, you can review the information Fitbit has recorded about your sleep.

Start the Fitbit app on your phone and wait for it to sync. You can see your overall sleep time on the Today page. This is the time Fitbit believes you were asleep the previous evening, not including any time you were restless or woke up during the night.

sleep 1

Tap the sleep entry to go to the detailed Sleep page. At the top of the page, you`ll see a graph that shows how you slept for the last week.

Swipe the graph to see three tabs: how long you slept each night, your sleep schedule (the hours you were asleep), and a summary of your sleep stages.

sleep 2

Below the graph is a list of your individual daily sleep cycles. It displays much more detail about your sleep stages throughout the night.

To see this in more detail, tap the day you want to view. On the detailed page, you can also compare your actual sleep to a "benchmark" of how the average person of your age and sex sleeps.

sleep 3

What you can do with Fitbit sleep information

Sleep monitoring is designed to help you assess if you`re sleeping a healthy amount, and to improve your sleep.

You can use the information to look for trends, like if you consistently don`t get enough sleep, or sleep restlessly and wake up often during a night`s sleep.

It`s also useful for spotting changes in your sleep. If you usually sleep well but have started to see a change in the quality of your sleep cycles, that might be an indication something is wrong, and you can try to change your sleep habits or have a discussion with your doctor.

Even though the holiday weekend is just around the corner, and New York City is feeling a little more quiet than usual (hard to believe, but it`s true!) we still have lots of important healthcare stories from the last week to share with you all.

The top story I want to highlight came from Lydia and Emma Court, who gave us the inside scoop on how a birth-control-pill delivery startup sparked a feud with CVS on Twitter.

They found a trending story on Twitter when viral backlash erupted against CVS. The social media conversation framed CVS as a massive corporation bent on obstructing women`s access to contraception. But after some digging, Emma and Lydia found that the startup, Pill Club, engineered the campaign with the help of a marketing firm and a controversial physician. Read the full story here.

Emma also interviewed Halle Tecco, the cofounder of the venture capital firm Rock Health. They discussed her personal reason for starting a women`s-health-focused startup. The startup, Natalist, is first offering a subscription bundle for women who are seeking to get pregnant. The idea came out of Tecco`s experiences trying to get pregnant. The story is poignant and well worth a read. Check it out:

But the team didn`t stop there!

As you can see the healthcare team has been busy as ever. And we`re not going to lie, we`re excited for a little break with the upcoming holiday weekend. I`ll be heading back home to Canada, seeing some friends in Montreal!

From the healthcare team, we hope everyone has a relaxing Labor Day weekend. We`ll be back reporting bright and early on Tuesday...not wearing white, we promise.

  • James Cameron told Deadline that "Terminator: Dark Fate" could launch a new trilogy if it performs well at the box office.
  • "We looked at it as a three-film arc, so there is a greater story there to be told," Cameron said. "If we get fortunate enough to make some money with `Dark Fate` we know exactly where we can go with the subsequent films."
  • But Exhibitor Relations senior box-office analyst Jeff Bock is "wary of dumping more money into this franchise," especially since Cameron will be busy with the "Avatar" sequels.
  • The Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian told Business Insider that the "magic formula for `Terminator` has always been the Cameron, Schwarzenegger, Hamilton combo." All three are returning for "Dark Fate."
  • Other experts were more skeptical of "Dark Fate`s" chances of reinvigorating the "Terminator" franchise.
  • "`Dark Fate` is in the challenging position of having to win back domestic audiences that felt burned by the last two or three films, and it will take more than nostalgia alone to do that," the Boxoffice Pro senior analyst Shawn Robbins told Business Insider.

The fate of the "Terminator" franchise could be determined by "Dark Fate."

James Cameron told Deadline on Thursday that the upcoming "Terminator: Dark Fate," which hits theaters November 1, could launch a new "Terminator" trilogy if it attracts audiences.

"We rolled up our sleeves and started to break out the story and when we got a handle on something we looked at it as a three-film arc, so there is a greater story there to be told," Cameron said. "If we get fortunate enough to make some money with `Dark Fate` we know exactly where we can go with the subsequent films."

But that`s what worries Exhibitor Relations senior box-office analyst Jeff Bock, who is "wary of dumping more money into this franchise, especially since Cameron`s guidance will be limited given his immersion in the sprawling `Avatar` universe."

"Unfortunately for [the studio ] Paramount, they are desperate for franchises right now," Bock told Business Insider. "So if this does become even a minor hit, expect more of these, in quicker succession, which is not a good thing for a series that is already hanging on by a thread."

terminator dark fate

Cameron, who directed the original 1984 "Terminator" and its 1991 sequel, "Terminator 2: Judgement Day," returned to the franchise as a producer on "Dark Fate" after a three-decade absence. So did Linda Hamilton, who portrayed Sarah Connor in both movies, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

It`s a familiar strategy that other franchises have resorted to, most notably "Halloween." "Dark Fate" ignores the three sequels after "Judgment Day" and gets back to basics.

Last year`s "Halloween" acted as a direct sequel to the 1978 original, with Jamie Lee Curtis reprising her role of Laurie Strode. It was a box-office hit, grossing 255 million worldwide off of a 10 million budget. Two sequels are already on the way from the production company Blumhouse.

Can "Dark Fate," which is directed by "Deadpool" director Tim Miller, replicate similar success for the "Terminator" franchise?

"The magic formula for `Terminator` has always been the Cameron, Schwarzenegger, Hamilton combo," Paul Dergarabedian, the Comscore senior media analyst, told Business Insider. "With `Dark Fate,` the bringing together of all of these essential key players is the spark that should ignite much excitement among moviegoers."

He added, "Nostalgic feelings for the the first two `Terminator` films, particularly for the massive box-office hit and cultural and cinematic phenomenon `Terminator 2: Judgment Day,` will be the emotional motivator that will determine the fate — bright or dark — of the future of the brand."

terminator 2 judgement day

"Judgment Day" made 438 million domestically after adjusting for inflation, and 520 million worldwide. Its sequels haven`t exactly lived up to the bar it set, despite Hollywood`s several efforts.

  • "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" grossed 224 million domestically after inflation and 433 million worldwide.
  • "Terminator Salvation" made 151 million after inflation in the US and 371 million globally.
  • "Terminator Genisys" is the lowest-grossing movie in the franchise domestically with 98 million after inflation, but earned 440 million worldwide with a smaller budget than its two predecessors.

Some experts are more skeptical of "Dark Fate`s" ability to breathe new life into "Terminator."

"If the film is good, and it must necessarily be very good for this to succeed, there is a chance for a revival of the franchise," Box Office Analyst`s Doug Stone said.

"Salvation" and "Genisys" received awful reviews, which could have done damage to their box office. "Salvation" has a 33% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, while "Genisys" has an even worse 26%.

"`Dark Fate` is in the challenging position of having to win back domestic audiences that felt burned by the last two or three films, and it will take more than nostalgia alone to do that," Shawn Robbins, the Box Office Pro senior analyst, said.

Stone pointed to 2017`s "Blade Runner 2049" as an example of how difficult it can be to resurrect a franchise, even if a movie is well reviewed. The movie brought back Harrison Ford, who starred in the 1982 original, and received an 87% Rotten Tomatoes critic score. It cost 150 million to make, but earned just 92 million domestically.

Like "Terminator Genisys," though, the international box office helped boost it to a more healthy, but still not great, total, and it ultimately grossed 259 million worldwide.

"The prospects for Paramount making money [with `Dark Fate`] are not that bad," Stone said. It all depends on "the story, the execution, and the interest the public still retains after these decades."

David Drummond has been called "the world`s luckiest lawyer."

That`s because while working as a partner at a Bay Area law firm, Drummond was introduced to two Stanford grad students named Larry Page and Sergey Brin who had a big idea. He was ultimately hired to legally incorporate Google and help the cofounders find funding.

By 2002, Drummond would officially join Google, and, as its top lawyer, help it go public in 2004. Today, Drummond serves as senior VP of corporate development and chief legal officer of Alphabet, Google`s parent company.

But Drummond recently found himself in the news for all the wrong reasons: It was reported that Drummond had a child with a Google employee and emotionally abused her. With other high-profile Google executives having recently been accused of sexual misconduct, the company`s culture is now under the microscope, reigniting criticism of how the behavior of the company`s leadership is handled.

Drummond released a personal statement on Thursday, saying that he is "far from perfect" but that there "two sides" to the story.

Here`s a glimpse into the life and career of David Drummond, one of Alphabet`s most senior executives:

Drummond became Google`s first outside counsel, helping Page and Brin legally incorporate their startup company and secure their initial venture funding.

Some would refer to Drummond as "the world`s luckiest lawyer" for getting assigned to work with Google in its early days.

By 2002, Drummond would officially join Google as its vice president of corporate development. He would soon also become Google`s top lawyer, with the title of general counsel.

In 2005, Drummond would find himself in hot water when the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) found Google had failed to register more than 80 million of employee stock option grants before its IPO the year prior.

The SEC commission found that Drummond was aware of the obligations, but thought that Google would be exempt from the law. It was also found that he failed to notify Google`s board of the risks of his decision. Google and Drummond were not fined by the SEC, but agreed to cease and desist from future securities laws violations.

During his tenure at Google, Drummond would lead global teams in charge of legal, public policy, communications, mergers and acquisitions, and product quality operations.

Drummond has also served as chairman for both of Alphabet`s investment arms, GV and Capital G. It is not clear whether he still holds these positions.

What we do know is that he helped GV win at least one major deal: In 2013, he helped lead its 250 million investment into Uber. Drummond would join Uber`s board that same year, though he stepped down in 2016 citing conflicts of interest with Alphabet`s growing self-driving car ambitions.

In November 2017, it was reported that Drummond had an extramarital relationship with a paralegal on his team named Jennifer Blakely. The two had a son together in 2007.

Almost one year later, in October 2018, The New York Times released a bombshell report providing more details into Drummond`s relationship with Blakely and her subsequent departure from Google.

Specifically, Blakely claimed that because Google discouraged managers from having relationships with subordinates, she was encouraged by HR to transfer teams.

"One of us would have to leave the legal department," Blakely told the New York Times. "It was clear it would not be David."

As Drummond would continue to rise the ranks at Google, Blakely left the company in 2007.

"Google felt like I was the liability," she said.

That same New York Times report would help spark a worldwide company walkout in which 20,000 employees protested Google`s history of giving multimillion-dollar payouts to departing executives accused of abusing their power and sexual harassment.

This week, Jennifer Blakely published a personal account detailing her relationship with Drummond, alleging that after the two separated in 2008, the legal chief would go long periods without checking in on their son and abused her emotionally.

"If I objected to his terms, if I didn`t `play ball,` he would punish me by punishing our son," Blakely wrote. "Months or years would go by where he wouldn`t see him or respond to my calls or texts with updates and pictures of him or even ask how he was doing."

The former Googler also provided a scathing critique of what she called an "oppressive and entitled" company culture that protects the company`s "elite men."

"The abuse of power didn`t stop with being pushed out," she wrote, referring to leaving her job at Google. "Afterwards I was pushed down, lest I got in the way of the behavior that had become even more oppressive and entitled."

One day later, Drummond issued a personal statement, in which he said he is "far from perfect" but refuted some of Blakely`s claims.

Specifically, Drummond said that besides Blakely, he was never "started" a "relationship" with anyone else at Google or Alphabet. By Blakely`s account, however, Drummond had multiple relationships with other female colleagues at Google.

Drummond said there are "two sides" to the story.

Google has refused to comment on the matter to Business Insider and declined to make Drummond available for an interview.

Drummond remains one of Alphabet and Google`s highest paid execs. In fact, in 2018, he was the second highest paid executive, earning 47 million — most of which came from stock option packages.

  • The most important first step in learning how to code is to think about your area of interest and career goals, says Michael Ellison, founder and CEO of CodePath.org.
  • Mobile app development is also an ideal introduction for newcomers since it`s a popular platform that most people are familiar with.
  • But in order to succeed, you`ll need to set a goal beyond just wanting to land a high-salary and job security, Ellison says.

With software developers ranking among the highest-paid and fastest-growing jobs in the United States, you might be motivated to consider switching your career path or learning how to code. In an analysis performed by CareerBuilder published on MarketWatch, software development jobs consistently places among the most lucrative career options in multiple states across the country.

But getting into the industry can feel intimidating if you don`t have a background in computer science or a related field. Whether you have a technical background or not, Michael Ellison, founder and CEO of computer science education non-profit CodePath.org, says setting a goal is a critical first step. "If you`re building a career based on what you`re interested in, it`s going to be a lot more sustainable," he recently told Business Insider.

CodePath.org was born out of CodePath.com, a technical training company that has operated training and onboarding programs for Silicon Valley giants like Facebook, Google, Dropbox, Airbnb, and Netflix. The company has created more than 30 courses that have taught over 2,000 programmers, according to its website.

Here`s Ellison`s best advice for learning how to code.

Don`t get into the industry just for a high salary or job security.

Before deciding what programming language you might want to learn, think about your long-term career goals. "If you say, my goal is to have a job or make a lot of money, then it`s not going to be as motivating and potentially as rewarding and exciting and interesting for you to go down this learning path," he said. He suggested setting a goal around building an app that solves a particular problem that you`re passionate about or interested in as a possible starting point.

Consider your current attributes and how you can apply them toward a new career path.

If your goal isn`t immediately clear, try thinking about what you`re already good at and what you enjoy most in your current role. Doing so can help you find your focus.

Some examples of general attributes or areas of interest could include solving human problems, thinking about systems and optimization, and managing complexity, Ellison said.

"The area of interest is more important initially than the technology and the tools, which are just really a means in order to get there," he said.

Start with mobile development as an introduction.

Ellison suggests mobile app development as a starting point for a few reasons: it`s lucrative, it`s a familiar platform that most people use everyday, and it involves developing for a single form factor and operating system.

Unlike full-stack or front-end development, focusing on developing something like an iPhone app can be much more simple. That`s because it involves developing for a single platform, meaning you won`t have to worry about accommodating as many different screen sizes or operating systems at first.

"It`s just so relatable and it`s really straightforward to be able to plug in," he said. "We love mobile as an introduction."

Apple`s Swift programming language for iOS is particularly accessible to newcomers, Ellison says. "You can use the same powerful tools that professional developers are using," he said. "And you can feel like you`re doing a lot even though you don`t yet understand a lot."

Start building.

Once you`ve learned the basics, one of the best ways to move forward is to start working on projects, especially with other people. "You really need to start building stuff and start working with other people as a prerequisite," Ellison said. "And then, don`t worry so much about the actual technologies. Just get started."

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition

  • The final Volkswagen Beetle has left the assembly line, and with it`s discontinuation, consumers have lost another affordable two-door.
  • There aren`t many coupés remaining in the US market that sell for 35,000 and under, but I rounded up a few.
  • Coupés are fun to drive and for the most part offer good versatility.

These days, it seems that sedans are a vanishing breed of automobile, what with automakers retiring them left and right due to the surging popularity of SUVs and pickup trucks.

But another genre of vehicle is also getting scarce: the el cheapo coupé.

There used to be a lot more two-doors in the market. Now, the space features sports cars, muscle cars, and supercars, but a dwindling supply of affordable coupés.

With the last VW Beetles having rolled off the assembly line in Mexico, there`s one less inexpensive two-door to choose from.

But the species hasn`t completely vanished. I rounded up some survivors, all priced 35,000 or less for the base versions.

The Beetle Final Edition SEL that I recently tested cost 27,000. I genuinely love this car and will miss it!

I`ve always been a big fan of two-doors. When I lived in LA, I owned both a Saab 900S and a Mazda Miata. Prior to that, I had a Mazda 323 and a two-door Mazda pickup truck, mixed in with some four doors. And when I was in high school, I enjoyed a slick Buick Regal two-door.

Sure, if you must have a two-door, then there are always snazzy sports cars. But they can be pretty high-ticket, such as the Porsche 911 Targa. That ride starts at 110,000.

Sporty fun for much less, with two doors, can be had via the MINI lineup. A base Mini Cooper stickers at 24,000.

For reliable, basic transportation, look no farther than the Honda Civic Coupe. Base price? 21,000.

The plucky Fiat 500 is two-doors cute, and a serious bargain at 15,000 base.

The Subaru BRZ`s four-cylinder engine maxes out at 205 horsepower, but this base-price 26,000 sportster has a lively tail-end and feels like it wants to rotate at 40 mph!

The mechanically similar Toyota 86 is a touch pricier at 27,000 base.

Step up to a burlier Nissan 370Z for 30,000 and taste a 332-horsepower V6. Nissan hasn`t updated its Z-car in a while, but the company doesn`t need to — it`s great the way it is.

32,000 gets you the Mazda Miata RF, a hardtop cabrio (there is no true Miata coupé). Not a versatile two-door, but who cares?

For a horse of a different color, the Jeep Wrangler has serious off-road cred — and could set you back just 29,000 for the bare-bones version.

Gold Explosion

While a supernova is the powerful explosion of a star, a kilnova is the result of two neutron stars colliding. These massive explosions rock the universe, ejecting huge amounts of gold and platinum into the cosmos. Scientists have confirmed that a kilnova has occurred in a nearby galaxy, but warn there’s not much point in trying to recover the precious metals. Not only are they far away, but the remnants are also believed to have collapsed into a black hole.

Elderly Couple Fights Off Bears

In a reverse Goldilocks scenario, an elderly couple in Pine, Colorado, had their home invaded by a mother bear and her cub. 71-year-old Jon Johnson encountered the mother bear eating a loaf of bread in his kitchen when the bear took a swipe at him. The two began a back and forth hitting each other, leaving Johnson with cuts on his stomach and face. George Field—his wife—rushed downstairs, clocking the bear with a baseball bat, sending the bears fleeing.

Paddleboarding From San Francisco To Hawaii

Antonio de la Rosa just spent two months adrift in the Pacific Ocean, paddling his way to Hawaii. The 50-year-old endurance athlete left San Francisco on June 9, 2019, on a paddleboard. Using the wind, currents, and his arms, he crossed 2,500 miles of open ocean. His board was equipped with solar panels and a small cabin. During the journey, he lost 10 pounds and only complained that he didn’t get enough sleep.

Hard Hat Service

The priests of Notre-Dame donned new helmets for the first mass conducted in the cathedral since a fire broke out and destroyed much of the centuries-old Gothic structure in April. With scaffolding dotting its walls, parishioners were finally able to attend service, though they—and the priests—were all required to wear hard hats for safety.

Slide With Jesus

While churchgoers flocked to the limited reopening of Notre-Dame, the officials at Norwich Cathedral have a different plan for attracting attendees. They’ve installed a 55-foot spiraling slide in the 900-year-old building. Church leaders and the choir got the first rides down the lighted, brightly painted tower. Services remain the same, but the church hopes that people will get a new perspective on the cathedral’s many ornate architectural features.
