harvey flooding homes texas

With winds topping 130 mph and downpours reaching four inches per hour, Hurricane Harvey made landfall on Texas` Gulf Coast on Friday night. Since then, it has killed at least 31 people, damaged or destroyed approximately 20,000 homes, and displaced tens of thousands.

It`s set to be one of the worst natural disasters in US history, and it`s not even over. Harvey just made second landfall in Louisiana, and several counties in the Houston and New Orleans area are under flash flood watch until Thursday evening.

Marco Luzuriaga, a photographer based in Houston, captured the ongoing devastation in the city with a drone.

On August 27, the drone flew over Brays Bayou, a river in Harris County, where rainfall has measured as high as 51 inches. As you can see below, Harvey has submerged the majority of buildings in the area:

Several other people have posted drone footage of the affected areas, including Port Arkansas, Rockport, and League City in Texas. Gizmodo did an extensive roundup of these videos if you`d like to check out more.

If you`d like to help those affected, there are lots of food banks and charities, both local and large-scale, raising money for Harvey relief. Before giving, it`s a good idea to research the reliability of these organizations.

Harvey could cause 48 billion to 75 billion in damage, Enki Research estimated. When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and the Gulf Coast in 2005, it led to over 100 billion in damage. Aerial footage is one way to document the wreckage.

Elon Musk

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is no stranger to tackling challenges: His companies work on everything from space suits to self-driving cars to miles of tunnels under Los Angeles.

They also work on communication.

In an email from Musk to Tesla employees published by Inc`s Justin Bariso, Musk encourages employees to buck the traditional chain of command found in most companies, in which messages always flow through managers.

"The problem with this approach is that, while it serves to enhance the power of the manager, it fails to serve the company," he wrote.

He continued:

"Instead of a problem getting solved quickly, where a person in one dept talks to a person in another dept and makes the right thing happen, people are forced to talk to their manager who talks to their manager who talks to the manager in the other dept who talks to someone on his team. Then the info has to flow back the other way again. This is incredibly dumb. Any manager who allows this to happen, let alone encourages it, will soon find themselves working at another company. No kidding."

A better way, Musk wrote, is to speak to whomever you need, whenever you need, however it best serves the company. "Anyone at Tesla can and should email/talk to anyone else according to what they think is the fastest way to solve a problem for the benefit of the whole company," he wrote. "You can talk to your manager`s manager without his permission, you can talk directly to a VP in another dept, you can talk to me, you can talk to anyone without anyone else`s permission."

In fact, he wrote, in the spirit of "ensuring that we execute ultra-fast and well," employees should consider themselves "obligated to do so until the right thing happens."

Bariso reports the email was sent to employees "a few years ago" and that Tesla confirmed its authenticity.

When your company is at the forefront of technology and space exploration, communication might seem like an afterthought. But, as Musk apparently recognized, poor communication can set everyone back. How are you supposed to accomplish anything if you`re misspeaking, and your colleagues don`t respect you?

If diverging from the traditional chain of command doesn`t work on clearing up communication, perhaps we should wait for Musk`s next project: He raised 27 million to link human brains with computers.

uber travis kalanick

A high stakes legal battle between Uber cofounder Travis Kalanick and one of the ride-hailing company`s largest investors will now be fought behind closed doors.

A Delaware judge on Wednesday told Uber investor Benchmark that its dispute with fellow Uber board member and former CEO Kalanick should be handled in private arbitration.

It`s a victory for Kalanick, who had requested that the court put the lawsuit on hold while an arbitrator considers the case.

But given the acrimony and the stakes involved — Uber is the world`s most valuable tech startup with a 69 billion valuation — the drama is far from over.

Benchmark filed the suit claiming Kalanick should be made to turn over two unfilled board seat he controls after the board gave him permission in 2016 to add more board members.

He was still CEO at the time. Benchmark said it thought Kalanick was trying to get himself reinstated as CEO. It also sought to get Kalanick removed from the board.

The court of public opinion

With the dispute in private arbitration, the fight over these seats will no longer be public. Still, it doesn`t sound as if Benchmark is giving up the fight, private arbitration or not.

A spokesperson tells us:

"We look forward to presenting the facts as the case proceeds. This case is fundamentally a question of integrity and values and the facts will fully support Benchmark`s position."

Kalanick isn`t giving up the fight either. His spokesperson sent us this statement:

"Mr. Kalanick is pleased that the court has ruled in his favor today and remains confident that he will prevail in the arbitration process. Benchmark’s false allegations are wholly without merit and have unnecessarily harmed Uber and its shareholders."

One Uber investor, Shervin Pishevar, who weighed in on the lawsuit in support of Kalanick, also cheered the judge`s decision. Pishevar characterized Benchmark`s suit as trying "to vilify Travis Kalanick in the court of public opinion."

Kalanick already has a rough reputation in the court of public opinion after Uber was rocked with so many scandals under his leadership that investors, led by Benchmark, forced him to resign from the CEO role in June. Those scandals also led to the exodus of many other top Uber execs.

Kalanick still owns about 10% of the company, including so-called "super-voting shares" that give him about 16% of the voting rights of Uber.

In the meantime, Uber`s board unanimously voted to appoint Expedia CEO Dara Khosrowshahi as its new CEO. Khosrowshahi accepted the job offer on Tuesday and he will now set about hiring new execs and trying to mend fences with Kalanick and the rest of the board.

Uber declined to comment.

The market for cryptocurrencies is red-hot, and dozens of crypto-focused hedge funds are looking to get in on the action.

Digital currencies, such as Bitcoin, are powered by distributed ledger technology and are not controlled by a centralized authority. The market for such currencies has exploded with over 800 coins on the market with a combined marketcap of 166 billion.

Autonomous NEXT, a fintech analytics firm, released a list of 55 cryptocurrency hedge funds on Tuesday, illustrating the mounting interest in the space.

"Like wild mushrooms, crypto hedge funds have been taking root in the volatile and unregulated soil of the crypto economy," Autonomous NEXT said in a post on their website. "So we went digging, and digging and digging," the firm added.

Many of the firms sport crypto-themed names such as Ether Capital, an homage to the token powering the ethereum blockchain, and Medici Crypto. 1confirmation is one of the youngest funds on the list. It launched on August 22 and has the backing of tech billionaire and "Shark Tank" star Mark Cuban.

The meteoric rise of digital currencies such as bitcoin, which is up nearly 700% since 2016, and ether, which is up 3,300% over the same period, has drawn the attention of Wall Street. On top of this, the market for initial coin offering, a fundraising method based on blockchain technology, is exploding with over 1.8 billion raised via the ICOs since the beginning of the year, according to Autonomous NEXT.

Even traditional hedge funders are paying attention.

"We have seen managers invest in the actual currencies and/or in the ICO’s, and soon there will be derivatives as well,” Steve Nadel, a hedge fund attorney, and partner at Seward & Kissel, said in an email sent to Business Insider.

"Cryptocurrencies have garnered a fair amount of interest in the investment management space, primarily because of the returns they have recently shown," he said.

NOW WATCH: This map reveals how much 100 is actually worth in your state

  • Penelope Gazin Kate Dwyer witchsy 2Witchsy cofounders Penelope Gazin and Kate Dwyer created a fake male cofounder to conduct business by email.
  • They noticed an enormous difference between how contractors and contacts treated him versus how they treated the women.
  • They`re glad to see that the story of Keith Mann, their fictional cofounder, is bringing more attention to sexism in tech and in the workplace.

Penelope Gazin, Kate Dwyer, and Keith Mann are the cofounders of art marketplace Witchsy.

But Mann doesn`t exist.

Gazin and Dwyer told Fast Company`s John Paul Titlow that they invented their third, male, cofounder after repeated instances of condescension with a sexist tone, like a developer who addressed an email to them starting, "Okay, girls ..."

"It was like night and day," Dwyer told Titlow of working through Mann. "It would take me days to get a response, but Keith could not only get a response and a status update, but also be asked if he wanted anything else or if there was anything else that Keith needed help with."

On Quartz, Dwyer told Lila MacLellan that before Mann existed, "it was very clear no one took us seriously and everybody thought we were just idiots." But when those same people received emails from Mann, Gazin told MacLellan, "they`d be like `Okay, bro, yeah, let`s brainstorm!`"

Dwyer told MacLellan they even gave Mann a backstory:

"He was a dude`s dude, they decided, the kind who played football in college. He was devoted to his wife of five years, and he couldn`t wait to be a dad. `He was just a really good guy,` says Gazin. `He doesn`t really understand Kate and I, but he`s been happy to help us with our project before we find husbands.`"

Dwyer and Gazin`s experience struggling to be taken seriously as company founders isn`t as unique as you might hope. Gender bias and sexism in the business world is well-documented.

One of the biggest stories in tech this year was the internal memo sent by Google engineer James Damore, who was fired from the company after writing that there are biological differences to blame for the lack of women in tech. Google CEO Sundar Pichai responded that the claims were "offensive and not OK," but that "people must feel free to express dissent" in a respectful way.

And the stunning string of blows that ultimately led to Uber CEO Travis Kalanick stepping down from his post began with a blog post by former employee Susan Fowler alleging she experienced gender bias and sexual harassment at the company.

There have been reported instances of gender bias and sexism in every industry from Hollywood to economics.

In an email to Business Insider the day after Fast Company reported on Mann`s existence, Dwyer reflected on the reaction they`ve gotten to the news.

"People have been losing their minds over the fact that we just gave him the last name Mann," Dwyer said. "So masculine."

She continued: "When people read about Keith they`ve been pretty upset at the idea that a fake character was taken more seriously than we were. He`s being used as a tool now to help highlight how rampant sexism is in tech and the workplace in general. It`s been great seeing so many people respond positively. Once again, Keith has done a great job!!"

apple car

A group of 17 engineers who worked on Apple`s car project have left to join the self-driving startup Zoox, according to a Bloomberg report published Wednesday.

The engineers departed the company after the tech giant abandoned plans to build its own car and decided to instead develop a self-driving system, according to the report, which cited sources familiar with the matter.

Apple reportedly scaled back its car efforts last year and in June, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that the company was instead focusing on creating a self-driving system. It`s possible the iPhone maker plans to license its autonomous technology to automakers instead of eventually creating its own self-driving vehicle.

The engineers snagged by Zoox specialized in systems that are needed in both traditional automobiles and autonomous vehicles, like braking systems, according to Bloomberg.

Zoox aims to create a fleet of autonomous vehicles for urban areas. The company got its permit to start testing self-driving cars in California in March 2016 and has raised more than 250 million, according to Bloomberg.

Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro_Dual

Samsung introduced three new products into its lineup of wearables on Wednesday: the Gear Sport, Gear Fit2 Pro, and Gear Icon X.

The smartwatch, fitness tracking band, and fully wireless earbuds are all updates to previous Samsung Gear products, and are aimed at going "beyond fitness" — meaning Samsung hopes these can be incorporated into everyday life.

"We want to help remove the stigma that fit can only mean one thing and that fitness trackers are complex and for only the most intense of workouts," DJ Koh, Samsung`s president of mobile communications business, said in a press release about the new products.

The new products are arriving just days after Fitbit announced a new smartwatch and wireless headphones, and just several weeks before Apple is expected to release a new Apple Watch. While Samsung hasn`t released pricing or availability for all the products yet, they`ll likely arrive this fall.

Nissan ProPilot

  • Nissan will release its new ProPilot Assist feature in the 2018 Leaf.
  • ProPilot Assist is a form of cruise control that will work in stop-and-go traffic. It will also keep the car in its lane when approaching curves.
  • I tried the system out on a Nissan Rogue prototype and found it made driving in heavy traffic a far less stressful experience.

Nissan`s electric Leaf is due for a big upgrade.

The Leaf will be revealed on September 6 and is expected to boast a range of 200 miles. Perhaps more importantly, it will be Nissan`s first try at a Tesla Autopilot competitor. The 2018 model will feature the company`s ProPilot Assist technology, a driver-assistance feature meant to take the stress out of highway driving.

As a level 2 system, Nissan designed ProPilot to handle stop-and-go traffic on highways, even in situations where it approaches a curve in the road. I tried the system out on a gray Nissan Rogue prototype that I drove along the Hudson Parkway for 45 minutes.

ProPilot Assist is powered by a front-forward radar, camera, and sensors. The system relies on clear lane markings to keep the car center on a highway.

I took the Rogue out on a rainy afternoon, which poses some challenges. Rain hurts the system`s ability to detect the contrast between the lane markings and the road. For that reason, ProPilot Assist will not work in heavy rain when the windshield wipers are on their fastest setting.

Thankfully, it wasn`t raining too much, so I switched the system on as soon as I merged onto the Hudson Parkway. It`s a very easy system to use: simply tap the blue button on the steering wheel and set the desired speed. As expected, ProPilot Assist turned off whenever I hit the brake, but I could fire it up again by pressing the "res" button.

nissan propilot assist

Whenever ProPilot Assist is turned on, it will first turn on Nissan`s Intelligent Cruise Control system. That means the car can handle stop-and-go traffic but it will not try and steer itself. Steering Assist won`t turn on until the car can detect lane markings, which can take a few seconds or minutes depending on the road.

Nissan`s Intelligent Cruise Control is a dream. The brake is incredibly smooth. I approached a very irritating and heavy slow down near the George Washington Bridge and the car gracefully paused during each incessant stop-and-go scenario.

I was able to control the amount of space between me and the car ahead. I chose the least amount of space possible (as any respectable New Yorker should) and was pleasantly surprised to see the gap wasn`t so large that cars were able to scam ahead of me. It also left enough space that I didn`t feel like I was cutting it close, even during harsher stops.

nissan propilot assist

As someone who regularly takes the Hudson Parkway to travel across the George Washington bridge, I`m upset I can`t use Nissan`s advanced cruise control in all future drives. I have yet to approach that area of the parkway without encountering a major slowdown. Letting the Rogue do all the work was the first time I`ve approached the bridge without feeling my blood pressure spike.

My experience with Steering Assist was less than ideal, but certainly not poor. When the feature is activated, a display in the instrument cluster will highlight the lanes in green. If it can no longer see the lane markers, it will turn off with a chime until it repositions itself again.

Steering Assist struggles in scenarios where lane markings are light or even different. I first turned on the system in the left lane, which had a solid-yellow lane marker on the left side and dotted-white lane markers on the right. Steering Assist was unable to detect the yellow lane for most of the test drive, which I was told had to do with the lack of contrast between it and the road.

nissan propilot assistThe system definitely fared better in the center lane when the car was surrounded by dotted-white lane markers on either side. I wouldn`t recommend using cruise control in the speed lane anyway, but it`s worth noting that lane detection can be spotty.

When Steering Assist is activated, it handles gentle curves just fine. I could feel the car steer beneath my hands, which was unsettling at first but easy to get used to.

When I approached an aggressive curve, however, the car`s natural instinct was to go flying forward unless I guided the wheel myself. It is not capable of handling sharp curves on its own.

Nissan notes that ProPilot Assist is not a self-driving feature, so drivers are supposed to help the car steer in these kinds of scenarios. But the feature felt a bit wonky and unsure unless the road was completely straight.

Generally speaking, I found using Steering Assist was more stressful than going without it. I constantly had to judge whether or not I should be heavy-handed when intervening or try to let the car work itself out before getting involved. I didn`t enjoy that uncertainty.

nissan propilot assist

Still, I will admit that I was using the feature in a difficult scenario. If I had been cruising down I-95`s straight and wide-open roads, I imagine the system would have done just fine. I wouldn`t bother turning it on while driving on a narrow or curvy highway like the Hudson Parkway.

Nissan is careful to ensure drivers don`t mistake ProPilot Assist as a self-driving feature. If I let go of the wheel, a warning flashed in the instrument panel with accompanying warning chimes. Those chimes increased in frequency the longer I kept my hands off the wheel.

Nissan said if I had kept my hands off the wheel for roughly 30 seconds, the car would have gradually slowed to a stop. That seems like a much better solution than turning the car off altogether.

Overall, Nissan`s ProPilot certainly takes the stress out of driving in heavy traffic. It`s not a flawless system, but it`s a welcome addition in a mass-market car. Nissan hasn`t said how much it will cost, but a spokesperson told me it will be cheaper than Tesla`s Autopilot system.

Nintendo just announced 20 new games coming to the Nintendo Switch, and one of them is a new sequel to a beloved franchise.

Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes

On Wednesday afternoon, Nintendo broadcast its latest YouTube stream full of announcements. Nintendo`s focus during the stream was on indie games — in under half an hour, Nintendo revealed 20 games from a broad spectrum of independent developers.

The big showstopper was "Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes," but there were plenty of other standouts. A new adventure in the "Super Meat Boy" series kicked off the show — the first game is known for being a brilliantly designed 2D platformer, like the original "Super Mario Bros." trilogy.

In "Super Meat Boy Forever," the game has evolved in terms of gameplay and structure. It arrives on the Switch in 2018.

Another standout was "Morphie`s Law," a ridiculous-looking new third-person shooter that`s scheduled to arrive "this winter" on the Switch.

In "Morphie`s Law," your goal is to shoot other enemies and reduce their physical mass. The more of their mass that you reduce, the larger your equivalent body part becomes. Shooting a lot of enemies in the head? Your player`s head will increase in size as a result. If it sounds bizarre, that`s because it looks bizarre. It also looks pretty unique and fun.

And then there`s "Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes," a surprise revival of a long-dormant series. The franchise is known for being as stylish as it`s gameplay is brutal, and the latest entry looks to continue that trend.

You`ll once again play as Travis Touchdown, and he`ll once again be equipped with his notorious "beam katana." If the first trailer is any indication, "Travis Strikes Again" is more of the anime-esque thrillride fans loved in previous games.

Here`s the full list of games revealed on Wednesday, and their release dates:

  • "SteamWorld Dig 2" — September 21
  • "Wulverblade" — September 2017
  • "Golf Story" — "This Fall"
  • "Earth Atlantis" — "This Fall"
  • "Celestial Elephants" — "This Fall"
  • "Sausage Sports Club" — "This Fall"
  • "Dragon: Marked for Death" — "This Winter"
  • "Morphies Law" — "This Winter"
  • "Battle Chef Brigade" — "This Holiday"
  • "Nine Parchments" — "This Holiday"
  • "Floor Kids" — "This Holiday"
  • "Mom Hid My Game" — "Later this year"
  • "Poly Bridge" — "Later this year"
  • "Shovel Knight: King of Cards" — "Early" 2018
  • "Next Up Heroes" — "Early 2018"
  • "Mulaka" — "Early 2018"
  • "Light Fingers" — "Early 2018"
  • "Super Meat Boy Forever" — 2018
  • "Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition" — 2018
  • "Travis Stirkes Again: No More Heroes" — "Later next year"

warren buffett

Consumers are increasingly favoring retailers’ own products over outside brands, and the Amazon-Whole Foods deal only exemplifies that, Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett told CNBC Wednesday.

“There’s always a huge struggle," the billionaire investor said in an interview from Smith & Wollensky steakhouse in Manhattan, where he hosts an annual charity lunch. "It’s been going on for decades and decades between brands and retailers. I mean, to some extent retailers are trying to increase their own brands, that’s why they have private labels."

“When you get particularly strong retailers — A Walmart, a Costco, and now an Amazon — and they keep getting strong, their position improves," Buffett added. "Packaged goods have had more trouble building follows through advertising in recent years."

Consumers’ shift away from brand-name products is creating a “sphere of despair,” Barclays said in a note this May. Retailers are "more willing to invest in `store brands,`" because the stigma of "generic" goods has lifted.

In fact, they’ve opened up to generic items so much that a startup selling unadorned goods raised 50 million in venture capital funding.

Both Amazon and Whole Foods have been playing up their own in-house brands in recent years.

Amazon has a 90% stranglehold on the online battery market, according to UBS, and its AmazonBasics battery line accounts for a significant portion of that. The batteries are cheaper, and in the eyes of consumers, identical. That’s bad news for brands like Buffett-owned Duracell, which positions itself as a superior product.

Whole Foods’ previously announced a line of separate “365 stores,” that would only sell Whole Foods-branded products. However, the fate of these smaller-format stores is uncertain after the Amazon acquisition.

Nonetheless, the rise of store brands has "greatly diminished manufacturers’ pricing power," Barclays wrote. That has large consumer conglomerates like Berkshire-held Mondelez, as well as Nestle, Unilever, and Proctor & Gamble running scared.

NOW WATCH: The looming war between Alibaba and Amazon

Whole Foods

Whole Foods now sells Amazon Echos in grocery stores. And, Amazon is now selling Whole Foods groceries.

Soon after Amazon`s 13.7 billion acquisition of Whole Foods went through on Monday, more than a thousand Whole Foods items were added to Amazon.com.

The previous Thursday, Amazon had announced that, post-acquisition, Whole Foods goods would be available on Amazon.com, AmazonFresh, Prime Pantry, and Prime Now.

Currently, to purchase many of the Whole Foods items you need to have an AmazonFresh membership. AmazonFresh is Amazon`s grocery delivery service and costs Prime members an additional 14.99 per month.

New York Magazine`s Grub Street noted that the average Whole Foods stocks 35,000 to 52,000 items, so there`s still a way to go before you can buy every Whole Food item on Amazon.com.

Here`s a sampling of some of the best-selling Whole Foods items available on Amazon as of Wednesday afternoon.

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Around 60,000 inhabitants of Germany`s financial capital Frankfurt will be ordered to leave their homes on Sunday while a large World War Two bomb discovered at a building site is made safe, the police said.
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union`s chief negotiator on Britain`s exit from the bloc hit back at British complaints about his "inflexible" approach to talks, saying on Monday that London still needed to make clear its positions.
  • Honda EV Urban concept Honda plans to launch two fully electric cars in 2018.
  • One will launch in China, and the other will likely launch in Europe.
  • The company plans to unveil an electric EV concept for the European market at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Honda is taking aim at Tesla and launching two electric cars by 2018.

Honda said in June that one of its upcoming electric cars will be specifically for the Chinese market, and the company hinted in a statement Tuesday that the other would be for the European market.

Honda said in the statement that it will debut its Urban EV Concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show in mid-September. The company described the vehicles as "Honda`s first EV for Europe." In June, the company`s president and CEO, Takahiro Hachigo, had only said that the other vehicle would be made for other regions

Honda is aiming for two-thirds of its vehicles to be electrified by 2030. The company said it plans to share more details about how it plans to accomplish this in Frankfurt. Currently, the company sells an all-electric version of its Clarity in the US, but the vehicle only gets a range of about 89 miles per charge. The company has not yet revealed any details about the upcoming concept car, but it`s likely the vehicle will have a range exceeding 100 miles per charge.

Honda`s push to make fully electric vehicles marks a significant shift for the Japanese automaker. The company had previously focused on the development of hydrogen and hybrid cars, betting these would be the vehicles of the future.

However, as more automakers jump into the electric car space and countries like China strengthen regulations favoring electric vehicles, the company has switched gears somewhat.

Last year, the company created a division dedicated to developing EVs and in April, the company announced that it planned on rolling out at least one electric car in China in 2018.

In a way, the company is playing catch-up. Many automakers, including Volkswagen, Ford, and Nissan, have already committed to rolling out long-range electric cars during the next few years. And GM already launched its first all-electric vehicle, the Chevy Bolt, last year.

What`s more, Tesla, the leader in the EV space, recently expanded its offerings to include a mass-market vehicle, the Model 3.

Tesla Model 3

The Model 3 is a high-tech car with a range of 220 miles per charge, priced at 35,000 before tax incentives.

Tesla delivered its first 30 Model 3 vehicles in July, and CEO Elon Musk has said the company aims to produce some 1,500 units in September and some 20,000 per month by December. Still, though, the bulk of Tesla`s pre-orders will be delivered in 2018, which is when the all-electric Honda will become available in some markets.

Honda, like other automakers, is honing in on the Chinese market to kickstart EV sales because the country is working to implement regulations that would drive EV adoption. Basically, China wants to set quotas for automakers so that electrified vehicles make up at least a fifth of Chinese car sales by 2025

Renault-Nissan announced on Wednesday that it will also be tackling the Chinese market and plans to begin production of an electric mini-SUV beginning in 2019. Earlier this month, Ford announced it was launching a new brand in China for the production of its electric car, and GM is already selling a small all-electric car in the country for 5,300.

It seems Target might be following Walmart`s lead and moving off Amazon`s Web Services cloud computing program.

The retailer with the Bullseye is planning to move at least some of its e-commerce platform, mobile development, and online operations off Amazon`s service, and instead use a competitor like Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, according to a new report by CNBC.

The move would be taken amid a sharp uptick in the competition online among retail giants. Target is moving aggressively to sell more product online, and Amazon is moving to solidify its dominance in the sphere.

It would make sense for Target to move to limit its exposure to a main competitorAWS is the dominant business for hosting websites and services, with a 44% share of the market, according to Synergy Research Group.

A spokesperson told CNBC that Target currently uses multiple cloud services, and would so in the future, but doesn`t detail specific vendor relationships.

If Target did move its services off of AWS, it would be following the lead of its larger competitor Walmart, who told certain technology vendors to stop using Amazon`s cloud services earlier this year according to a Wall Street Journal report.

zolo mojo

Google on Wednesday announced that its Google Assistant tech would officially be available on a number of third-party speakers and other devices later this year.

The company said that it would open its digital voice assistant up to developers at its Google I/O conference this past May, so the moves are not unexpected.

Google highlighted three speakers that will carry Google Assistant: the Zolo Mojo from popular accessories maker Anker, the TicHome Mini from Chinese manufacturer Mobvoi, and Panasonic’s SC-GA10.

Google teased that various smart home appliances, including washing machines and vacuums, will also have access to the Assistant, and named LG as one partner. The company said more devices carrying the digital helper would be announced at the IFA tech show occurring this week in Berlin.

google assistant tichome miniThe company is making it sound like the Assistant will behave the same way on third-party devices as it does on Google’s own Home speaker. An Anker representative said the Zolo Mojo speaker will have all the same functionality as the Home except for the ability to make phone calls, but that the company expects to add that feature before the end of the year.

The Mojo itself is similar in size to the Home, but costs 70, significantly undercutting the Home’s 130 retail price. The representative said the Home is a bit louder, however. Details about the other two speakers are a bit more sparse, but Panasonic says its tower-like speaker will arrive in "early 2018," while the TicHome Mini, which was technically announced around Google I/O, looks to be highly portable.

Google’s larger strategy here seems to be following in the footsteps of Amazon and its rival Alexa assistant. Amazon has made it a point to integrate its digital helper into whatever device or platform it can, and has allowed it to exist on speakers beyond its popular Echo series already.

Google HomeThat openness has given Alexa a general leg-up in the nascent voice assistant market thus far. The underlying belief among several major tech companies is that such assistants will be a dominant interface in the years to come. With the forthcoming Assistant-enabled appliances, for instance, Google says you could use voice commands to start up your washing machine and check if your laundry is done.

The announcements here appear to mark Google’s first step at countering Alexa’s momentum in the home. It’s worth noting that the company already holds a major advantage on mobile devices, though, given that the Assistant comes baked into its popular Android operating system.

High Network Speed Must Have

This story was delivered to BI Intelligence Apps and Platforms Briefing subscribers. To learn more and subscribe, please click here.

A high-speed mobile network beats out unlimited data as the “must-have” feature for consumers, according to BI Intelligence’s exclusive Digital Telecom Consumer Survey.

Overall, 84% of consumers said that a high-speed mobile network is the most important offering to consider when selecting a wireless provider — well above the 68% who said unlimited data. The results are surprising considering that unlimited data is the focus of most carriers` mobile offerings.

Here`s why consumers now value network speed over unlimited data:

  • Consumers are viewing more and more video content on mobile, and that means they need more data. And this trend is set to compound — mobile video is expected to reach nearly 75% of global mobile data traffic by 2021, up from 50% in 2016, according to Ericsson.
  • To meet consumer demand, carriers are bringing back unlimited data packages. Verizon, for example, reintroduced an unlimited plan after suffering substantial customer losses in Q1 2017. The telecom lost a net 289,000 postpaid phone customers, but said it was on pace to lose nearly 400,000 users prior to its unlimited plan launch. The new offering successfully curbed the flow of departures.
  • Mobile video consumption relies on data and network speed — since consumers have access to unlimited data, network speed has come to forefront of demand. Consumers now consider a high-speed network the must-have feature.
  • So although consumers value unlimited data, they now value network speed more. While consumers may have switched carriers for unlimited data in the past, they now rank network speed as the No. 1 must-have, and this could present an opportunity for carriers.

Additionally, telecoms` unlimited data plans actually do have limits — to offer these plans, telecoms throttle network speeds. Carriers are struggling to maintain network quality while meeting the growing demands of their unlimited data subscribers, according to a report by Open Signal. Some telecoms, like Verizon and AT&T, have opted to offer unlimited data plans that deliver high-bandwidth mobile content, like mobile video, at reduced speeds, to stave off the strain caused by growing mobile video consumption. Throttling likely exacerbates consumers` existing demand for faster network speeds.

While 5G, the next generation of mobile networking technology, will support the boom in streaming mobile video, it`s still a long ways off. 5G technology is expected to increase mobile network capacity by 1,000 in 10 years compared with today’s 4G networks, according to estimates from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. In the meantime, carriers will continue to find ways to accommodate growing demand for mobile video to win subscribers.

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece`s government presented a three-year plan to overhaul the country`s public sector on Wednesday, the latest attempt to fix a problem that helped plunge the country into its worst crisis in decades seven years ago.

Shervin Pishevar

In the wake of the appointment of a new CEO to Uber, one of the company`s investors, Shervin Pishevar, just sent out a wild statement.

The statement references the infighting of the board that reached epic proportions, forcing Uber founder Travis Kalanick to resign in June after the tragic death of his mother.

Pishevar was firmly on Team Kalanick, The opposition was Team Benchmark. Benchmark is an investor in Uber and a board member. The VC firm sued Kalanick and has been trying to force him off the board.

Pishevar`s statement is bizarre in its word choices and tone, but it does seem to hint that the fight to get Kalanick reinstated as CEO isn`t wholly over.

Here it is:

Let us take this pause in this moment, when we find ourselves swimming in the crucible of one of the grandest business and moral battles of our generation, and find strength in each stroke of our proverbial digital pens, that we wrote with the indelible, eternal and permanent ink of righteousness. We write with the souls of thousands of lives saved, the lives of millions of jobs created liberating multitudes of drivers from the shackles of servitude to iniquitous taxi cartels of corrupt cabals that choked cities with their pollution of air and morals. We write with the spirit of Bonnie Kalanick, who raised her son with deep unconditional love and unfading faith in his ability to do good for the world. Whose tragic and untimely death was used against her son at his most vulnerable, unspeakable time of pain.

They chose to strike at a moment of a devoted son`s retreat and leave of absence to mourn the absence of the inviolable love of his mother. In doing so, they joined the very corruption her son had devoted such fervent passion to fight. In her memory, we devote our actions to a just cause; to defend what is right and to protect the interest of not only shareholders but most importantly the far more important stakeholders of employees, drivers and customers whose lives have been forever altered by the abiding faith and fervent hard work of Travis Kalanick and the Uber team. Their allegiance was met by this unholy alliance of perfidious greed devolving rapidly into the audacity of vituperative unparalleled predatory rapacity.

Let us strike tomorrow with the full and fulsome courage of our convictions. Let our just cause give pause to those who would ever dream of ever emulating the shameful shenanigans of these sanctimonious hypocrites who fling filings and letters de haut en bas; when it is we who have the higher moral ground and our letters and filing will hail down upon their platforms, exposing them as bitterly barren barons of moral turpitude. And as the summer sets, we let us be steward of truth who in unison proclaim: fiat justitia ruat caelum.
