As of Wednesday, more than 16,000 Facebook users have joined the “Egyptian mothers’ revolt against curricula” page, banding together in solidarity against the “outdated” school curricula provided by the Ministry of Education and taught to their children.

The Facebook page was created in mid-March. Its members complain that the curricula push their children to memorise information and discourage research and innovation.

Toward this end, members also have parallel activities outside of the social media realm. A segment of them have called for boycotting the education ministry by having children stay at home for two weeks.

There are also calls for organising a protest by mothers outside the ministry’s headquarters.

The “trigger of the [mothers’] revolt” was the curriculum taught to sixth grade elementary students, according to Naglaa Fathallah.

She told Aswat Masriya that curricula are too dense, “huge”. In the history subject alone, she added, students are required to learn about Egypt’s history from Mehmet Ali Pasha’s era through the 2011 Uprising and its aftermath.

The 2011 Uprising saw the ouster of Hosni Mubarak after he ruled the country for 30 years.

Fathallah has two children: One in sixth grade, the other in first grade.

She said that nature of curricula and the size of information in them make children hate school and education.

Fathallah also spoke about a well-known problem that has long marred the education system in Egypt: private tutoring. Many Egyptian parents pay for children to get extra tutoring outside school so as to help them better understand their syllabi.

Fathallah believes that the curricula are so difficult that parents have to seek private tutoring for their children.

“If our demands are not met, we will escalate [the issue],” she said. Their demands, according to the mother of two, are that parts of the second semester’s syllabi for this school year be chopped off.

Samar Ibrahim, another member of the group who identified herself as a housewife, agrees with Fathallah. “We want the third unit of each subject be cancelled because exams are a month away. This way, the burden will be a bit lighter,” she said.

But Naglaa Saieed, also an Egyptian mother, speaks of more radical demands: a comprehensive reform of education policies in Egypt.

“We are tired of officials who have no idea about the nature of existing curricula, and of our children’s inability to absorb them,” Saieed said.

The ministry responds

Education Minister al-Hilali al-Sherbini spoke to a TV show on Sunday and promised that the ministry will remove some parts of the new school year’s syllabi.

But an expert told Aswat Masriya that this is not the right approach to dealing with the problem. “The ministry has a wrong idea about removing excessive parts of the curricula. It has long exploited such calls to cut spending on the printing of schoolbooks through decreasing the amount of paper,” Abdel Hafiz Tayel, the head of the Egyptian Center for Education Rights, said.

“The problem is not in the number of pages, but is in presenting useful content that respects the child’s mind and becomes the child’s friend.”

“The state is still unable to set policies for good and real education, even after the outbreak of two revolutions,” he added, in reference to the overthrow of Mubarak in 2011, which was followed by the military ouster of then-President Mohamed Mursi in 2013 after mass protests against his rule.

“A change in curricula should take account of the developmental objectives that education seeks [to achieve].”

The parents of Italian doctoral student Giulio Regeni, whose tortured body was found in a ditch in Cairo in early February, demanded on Tuesday a strong response from Italy if the truth behind Regeni’s death is not revealed.

Speaking at a televised press conference at Italy’s Senate, Paola Regeni, the mother of the Italian student, said she barely recognized her son when his body was shown to her at the morgue.

“At the mortuary I only recognized Giulio by the tip of his nose,” she said at the first press conference since her son’s body was found.

She said that what she witnessed was “the world’s evil,” and “what they did to him is unspeakable.”

The 28-year-old PhD student went missing on January 25, the fifth anniversary of the 2011 uprising. Human rights groups have said the torture marks on his body – burns, stabbings, pulled out fingernails – resemble the methods used by Egypt’s security forces, pointing to the involvement of Egyptian authorities in Regeni’s death. Egypt’s government forcefully denies the accusation.

At the press conference, Regeni’s parents refuted Cairo’s latest claim that a criminal gang, the members of which Egyptian security forces killed in a shoot-out last week, had been responsible for the death of their son.

The Ministry of Interior had issued a statement after the exchange of fire between the gang and security forces, claiming police raided a Qalyubiya apartment belonging to the sister of one of the slain gang members, where evidence was allegedly discovered proving the gang’s connection to Regeni.

Egyptian officials are set to visit Italy on 5 April to discuss the ongoing investigation.

Commenting on the visit, Paola Regeni said, “If April 5 proves to be a wash-out, we expect a strong response from our government, a really strong one.”

She also said that if the investigation does not yield satisfactory results, Italy should declare Egypt to be an “unsafe” country for Italian tourists, according to the Associated Press.

Head of the Italian Senate’s human rights commission, Luigi Manconi, called on the Italian government to return Italy’s ambassador to Cairo for “consultations” in order to put further pressure on the Egyptian government.

“I think it is necessary to consider the revision of diplomatic and consular ties between the two countries,” Italian news agency ANSA reported.

Regeni’s father, who spoke at the press conference, agreed with Manconi’s suggestion.

“I believe that the proposals made by Senator Manconi are the correct response in the absence of cooperation,” he said.

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has insisted Italy will not accept anything but the truth concerning the circumstances of the student’s murder.

The Regeni family lawyer, Alessandra Ballerini, described Egypt’s claim that a gang was behind the murder as a “grotesque” attempt to conceal what really happened.

Ballerini disclosed that the autopsy carried out by Italian investigators showed Regeni died after “protracted torture” and “whatever the truth, it is clearly very uncomfortable for the [Egyptian] regime.”

Hisham Geneina

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi dismissed Hisham Geneina, the head of Egypt’s Central Auditing Organization (CAO) by presidential decree on for “misleading the public” about rampant government corruption in the country.

Sisi’s decree was issued on Monday, just hours after State Security Prosecution issued a statement saying that Geneina’s claims about the country’s corruption were false and relied on old numbers to exaggerate the total figures.

The president had previously passed a decree that gave him the unprecedented power to dismiss the heads of regulatory agencies, including CAO and the Central Bank of Egypt, among others.

Last year, Geneina made statements to the media that government corruption cost the country EGP 600 billion from 2012-2015, stirring widespread controversy.

Shortly thereafter, Sisi formed an investigative committee to look into the auditor’s claims. In January of this year, the committee concluded that Geneina’s statements were false and accused him of “deliberately defaming state authorities.”

Geneina had been appointed as the country’s top auditor by ousted President Mohamed Morsi, causing some to accuse him of being a puppet of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.

Sisi has repeatedly stated that he is “committed” to fighting corruption. However, his decision to dismiss Geneina, who has often reported corruption in the country’s institutions, has raised eyebrows.

Egypt has long struggled with corruption; Transparency International reported Egypt as the 88th least corrupt nation out of 175 countries in 2015. This figure had reached 118 out of 175 in 2012.

The Etruscan stele was embedded in the foundations of a monumental temple where it had been for more than 2,500 years.

Researchers excavating a site in Poggio Colla, northeast of Florence, in Italy discovered a rare stele while working in their 2015 field season. The large stele contains text that is believed to be religious in nature and which archaeologists think will contain details on a deity that was worshipped by the Etruscans in the 6th century BC.

The discovery of the stele was announced during a scientific exhibit of the Tuscan Archaeological Superintendency entitled “Shadow of the Etruscans,” in Prato, Italy.

Phys.Org reports that the text on the great slab contains at least 70 legible letters and punctuation marks. Although the Etruscans are believed to have been a highly cultured people, many of the previous examples of ancient Etruscan writing have come from funeral settings or in the form of just names and titles. Thus, it is expected that the stele from a different context will likely contain new vocabulary and information on the Etruscan way of life.

Russian officials have indicated that the resumption of flights to Egypt, which were stopped following the downing of a Russian airliner in October, will be postponed as a result of Tuesday’s hijacking of an EgyptAir passenger plane.

Until an investigation has been carried out regarding the circumstances of the incident, it would be premature to say with certainty that air traffic between Russia and Egypt will be restored, presidential spokesperson Dimitry Peskov said, according to state-owned TASS.

“So far, I consider it premature to think anything [on the resumption of air traffic]. Let us first get more or less reliable information [on the plane hijacking in Egypt],” Peskov told journalists Tuesday.

“But we don’t know reliably what happened there, for what reasons and so on,” the Kremlin spokesman said, adding, “It would hardly be reasonable to make any hasty conclusions.”

The head of the Russian tourism agency Rosturizm also expressed doubts about recommencing flights to Egypt, stating that Tuesday’s hijacking “should be taken into account” when making any decisions to resume air communications with Egypt.

“The plane hijack affair is rather telling, I believe. I would avoid making any comments for now as to how this may affect the resumption of flights. The way I see it, the situation should be taken into account most seriously,” he said.

On its part, the Russian Tourism Industry Union ruled out an early resumption of flights to Egyptian tourist destinations considering yesterday’s incident.

Irina Tyurina, Tourism Industry Union spokesperson, said, “The resumption of flights between both countries is still not confirmed. Even if it was, today’s hijacking incident will further postpone it,” she told Russia Today.

The union has previously called on the Egyptian government to implement stricter security measures to secure the safety of Russian tourists in Egypt.

Russia and Egypt have discussed the restoration of air traffic between the countries since a Russian commercial airliner crashed over the Sinai Peninsula in later October last year. Earlier this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that he had agreed with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry that flights would recommence “as soon as possible.”

On Tuesday morning EgyptAir Flight MS181 en route to Cairo from Alexandria’s Borg Al-Arab airport was taken over by a passenger, later identified as Seif El-Din Mostafa, claiming to be wearing an explosive belt.

After landing in Cyprus the hijacker released most of the passengers except for the pilot, three foreign nationals and some crew members who remained onboard while negotiations were underway.

The people on board were eventually released and the hijacker was arrested.

Archaeologists who explored the remote mesas of Northern Arizona have identified a previously undocumented group of petroglyphs, one of which confirms the presence of a prehistoric solar calendar.

According to Western Digs, the solar calendar has been marking the seasons for more than 700 years with a shadow dagger that travels across the sandstone face. This feature is made by a natural outcropping of rock above a panel of petroglyphs. Western Digs reports that the “shadow dagger” bisects a spiral carved onto the cliff wall, while another shadow interacts with a set of eight circles pecked into the panel’s left side.”

The researchers discovered the petroglyphs in the back country of the Wupatki National Monument site northeast of Flagstaff, in Arizona, USA. The area includes the ruins of dozens of sites built by Ancestral Puebloans, also known as the Kayenta or the Sinagua.

ِِEgyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail greeted the passengers and crew at Cairo International Airport, where they landed at around 9 pm on Tuesday.

Egypt’s Minister of Civil Aviation Sherif Fathy, along with Vice Chairman of EgyptAir Holding Ahmed Adel, traveled to Cyprus to “follow up the safe arrival of the passengers and cabin crew of the hijacked aircraft back to Cairo International Airport,” EgyptAir had announced via Twitter.

The EgyptAir flight was en route to Cairo from Alexandria’s Borg Al-Arab at around 7 am on Tuesday when the hijacker, later identified by officials as Seif El-Din Mostafa, began to demand that the plane land in Turkey or Cyprus and threatened to detonate a suicide belt.

Upon the plane’s landing in Cyprus’ Larnaca airport, several passengers were released but the pilot, three foreign passengers and some crew members remained onboard for some time while negotiations with the Mostafa were underway.

All those remaining on board the plane eventually departed and Mostafa was arrested.

According to Cypriot officials, Mostafa’s alleged “suicide belt” was a fake and no explosives were found on board the plane.

Fathy had said during a press conference earlier on Tuesday that authorities remained unsure whether the alleged suicide belt was real but that security officials were treating the threat as real to avoid putting the passengers at risk.

Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades said that the incident was not terrorism-related.

As the chaos in the news begins to die down in the wake of the EgyptAir plane hijacking, many social media users have begun to highlight the “silver linings” of the incident, including the professional response from Egyptian officials and the manner with which the flight crew handled the events.

Hats off to #Egyptair pilot and cabin crew! 👏

— Monica Hanna (@monznomad) March 29, 2016

The flight’s crew, headed by Captain Amr El Gammal, was hailed for showing immense bravery and calmness throughout the incident. While some said the pilot should not have landed, most applauded him for putting the passengers’ safety first.

“Ultimately it was the crew members that had to evaluate whether it was better to attempt to overpower the hijacker or to actually accede to their demands and to divert the aircraft as they elected to do. So sometimes if the worst thing that happens is burning a few hours’ extra fuel, and delaying things, it’s better just to go along with the hijacker’s demands,” BBC quoted aviation expert Philip Baum as saying.

Kudos to the #EgyptAir #MS181 crew who by all accounts kept their calm and did everything they could to reassure passengers during hijack.

— Hala Gorani (@HalaGorani) March 29, 2016

Upon landing at Cyprus’ Larnaca airport, El Gammal and his entire crew also refused to leave the aircraft before all passengers were safely evacuated.

Pictures circulating on social media even seemed to show the hijacker handing one of the flight attendants a letter to give to his wife, whom he reportedly hijacked the plane for.

Many also hailed EgyptAir for providing clear and timely statements via social media, and newly appointed Egyptian Civil Aviation Minister Sherif Fathy for his professionalism in addressing the media at a press conference as the hostage crisis continued to unfold.

Despite the ever-growing numbers, orphans continue to constitute one of Egypt’s largest, most marginalized communities. According to UNICEF’s latest statistics released in 2009, orphans in Egypt are estimated at 1.7 million. Adding salt to the wound, many orphans, due to the orphanages’ poor conditions, choose to live on the streets instead, suffering a life of violence, drugs and abuse.

To improve the quality of care provided within Egypt’s orphanages, Wataneya Society for the Development of Orphanages created the first skills-based accredited vocational qualification for childcare in the Middle East.

Since its establishment in 2008, Wataneya Society has set out to reform institutional homes for children without parental care in Egypt. Due to the country’s staggering increase in orphans, as well as the dramatic number of street children, Wataneya has been striving to create a stable and supportive space for all orphans.

In February 2013, five years after its launch, Wataneya initiated its caregiver training program after being approved by the United Kingdom’s largest awarding organization, Edexcel.

“These children are the future of Egypt, and their care and education can positively influence the entire Egyptian society,” explains Assy Girah, Wataneya’s quality assurance officer for the childcare vocational qualification, as he reflects on the importance of high-quality childcare for orphans. The training, which takes around 10 months to complete, provides caregivers with a deeper understanding of the psychological development of children from birth till the age of 16.

Seeing as how the childcare sector has long been neglected in Egypt, Wataneya continues to work relentlessly to develop a strong professional workforce that is hoped to form stronger pillars for this overlooked sector.

“Orphans are often [shunned] from mainstream society,” says Girah, explaining how it is difficult for the majority of orphans adjust to life outside the institutions where they live. By improving the level of care in Egypt’s orphanages and childcare facilities, it is hoped that the educational and emotional wellbeing of orphaned and abandoned children will consequently improve, resulting in a chain reaction of positive change due to impact the entire Egyptian society.

To date, Wateneya has helped over 1700 caregivers in 40 orphanages complete the childcare training programs. Under the umbrella of Pearson, the world’s largest learning company, the Edexcel program meets international quality standards and is globally recognized by colleges, universities and employers.

Despite the success achieved by Wataneya’s training program, many caregivers face the financial burden of affording such programs, which Girah regards as one of the primary obstacles curbing the outreach of Wataneya’s programs.

“Any internationally certified vocational qualification is expensive,” Girah says. “Everywhere in the world, they have scholarships [for caregivers] – except in Egypt.”

Out of goodwill, many Egyptians choose to donate toys and clothes; however, by providing an educational scholarship to caregivers, children are able to receive the quality care needed for them to become positive, proactive and influential members in their communities.

To contribute to their training program or get involved, contact Wataneya via their Facebook page.

Mocking the incident on social media, Egyptians have been posting a range of memes making fun of the unconfirmed story that the hijacker simply wanted to send his ex-wife a four-page letter. Others posted memes imagining the happiness of those on board the flight discovering that they had arrived in Cyprus instead of Cairo.

“For just EGP 180 you can end up in Cyprus! And who knows, if you’re lucky, you might end up in France or Italy,” read one post on Facebook that imitated an advertisement for flying with EgyptAir.

Along with “wishing they were with them”, some social media users have been posting about how far they would go to win back an ex.

The social media fascination with this story comes as an Egyptian Foreign Ministry official reportedly called the hijacker “an idiot, not a terrorist”.

However, it has come at a cost for Cyprus’ President Nicos Anastasiades’ who said “women are always involved” and laughed when he was asked whether the hijacking was related to a romantic issue. The President has been criticized across the world on social media for his comments which were deemed as sexist by many.

The hijacking incident, which captured the attention of international media outlets, remains a mystery, with no clear motive established.

Photographs taken on the plane of the hijacker, including one in which another individual is clearly smiling, provide a sense that the situation was not overly chaotic. Passengers leaving the plane were also seen calmly departing with their luggage.

According to some reports, the crew refused to leave the plane until all passengers were safe. This led to many on social media praising the EgyptAir crew for their bravery and their professionalism.

However, it remains unclear whether a serious security breach resulted in this incident, despite the lack of an actual explosive vest, or whether this could have happened anywhere.

Photos emerged earlier showing the hijacker wearing a white belt around his waist. Egypt’s Minister of Civil Aviation Sherif Fathy had said during a press conference that authorities remained unsure whether the alleged suicide belt was real but that security officials were treating the threat as real.

The hijacker’s specific demands remain unclear; initial reports had claimed that he was attempting to reach his Cypriot ex-wife but Cyprus’ state broadcasting later reported that the hijacker demanded the release of prisoners in Egypt.

EgyptAir flight MS181 was en route to Cairo from Alexandria’s Borg Al-Arab at around 7 am on Tuesday when the hijacker began to demand that the plane land in Turkey or Cyprus and threatened to detonate a suicide belt.

Upon the plane’s landing in Cyprus’ Larnaca airport, several passengers were released but the pilot, three foreign passengers and some crew members remained onboard for some time while negotiations with the hijacker were underway.

Negotiations with the hijacker of EgyptAir’s flight MS181 are ongoing and security officials are treating the hijacker’s threats as real, Egypt’s Minister of Civil Aviation Sherif Fathy said in a press conference Tuesday.

According to the minister, the hijacker claims to be wearing a suicide belt and, while authorities remain unsure whether the belt is real, they are “carefully” dealing with the security threat as real.

Fathy said that there are currently seven people still on the plane, including the plane’s pilot and co-pilot, one air hostess, a security official and three passengers. He declined to disclose the passengers’ nationalities.

Fathy also said that the hijacker’s demands “are not yet known” and that negotiations are still underway.

Following the presser, Cyprus’ state broadcasting reported that the hijacker has demanded the release of prisoners in Egypt.

However, Cypriot President  stated earlier that the hijacker is “not a terrorist” and has “personal motives” for the hijacking.

The Guardian also quoted an “official” from Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs as saying the hijacker is “not a terrorist, he’s an idiot. Terrorists are crazy but they aren’t stupid. This guy is.”

Egypt’s MFA spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid denied he had issued “any statements or remarks” to The Guardian about the hijacking incident.

Spokesman for Egypt’s presidency Alaa Youssef told CNN that the hijacker is Seif El Din Mustafa but did not disclose Mustafa’s nationality.

Reports that quickly went viral had stated that the hijacker is Ibrahim Samaha, a veterinary professor at Alexandria University. However, Samaha, who is indeed a professor, told BBC Arabic that he was on board the plane but was not the hijacker.

Egypt’s Cabinet released a statement apologizing to Samaha for the misidentification.

Meanwhile, Fathy refused to reveal the name of the hijacker during the press conference, saying his name “is not helpful” to ongoing security investigations.

Egypt’s ambassador to Cyprus is currently cooperating with Cypriot officials and following up on the situation as it develops, according to a statement from Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Amid the hostage situation that is underway on the hijacked Egyptian Airbus A320 flight, all passengers have been released, aside from four foreign nationals and seven crew members, according to reports.

Egyptian aviation authorities have said the hijacker, whose name is reportedly Ibrahim Samaha, has threatened to detonate a bomb. There are unconfirmed reports that the hijacker is an Egyptian citizen.

“The pilot said that a passenger told him he had an explosives vest and forced the plane to land in Larnaca,” the Egyptian civil aviation ministry said in a statement.

According to Cyprus’ state television, the hijacker has demanded a translator and asylum.

The commercial airliner was hijacked and forced to land at Larnaca Airport in Cyprus at around 8 am on Tuesday morning.

An Egyptian commercial airliner has been hijacked after leaving  Alexandria, but has landed at Larnaca Airport in Cyprus, according to Egyptian and Cyprian airport officials.

Unconfirmed reports state that 81 passengers were on board the plane when it took off from Alexandria at around 8 on Tuesday morning before it was hijacked, according to an airport official at Larnaca.

When the plane was 70 miles south of Cybrus the pilot reported to Larnaca airport that it had been hijacked and requested to land.

“The control tower at Larnaca Airport was  informed at 8.30am that a plane from Egypt had been hijacked,” a police sources told The Cyprus Weekly. “It landed at the airport at 8.50am.”

The plane is reportedly an Airbus A320 belonging to EgyptAir and was heading to Cairo.

A bomb is believed to be on board the plane, according to AP news agency.

A man on board is also believed to be armed but has as of yet no issued any demands.

The Egyptian pound weakened to a record low of 10 against the dollar on the black market on Monday as the country’s currency crisis continues to gather steam, according to Reuters.

Black market currency rates reached 10 against the dollar compared to last week’s EGP 9.8 per dollar, five traders told the wire agency.

The fall of the pound comes as import-dependent Egypt faces a foreign currency crisis that has pressured the government to devalue the pound.

In an effort to bridge the gap between official and black market rates, the Central Bank of Egypt devalued the country’s currency from 7.83 to 8.95 per dollar on March 14, which marked the first under current CBE governor Tarek Amer. The bank later strengthened it and adopted a more flexible exchange-rate policy.

Foreign currency reserves declined by more than 50 percent last month to USD 16.5 billion, from roughly USD 36 billion prior to the 2011 revolution, with Egypt struggling to regain the rapidly depleting reserves.

With the world infatuated with movies made by Marvel studios, bitter rival DC Studios couldn’t stand idly by. They responded to Marvel’s upcoming Captain America: Civil War blockbuster with one of their own by pitting their two cornerstone heroes against one another while adding an array of fan favorite heroes and villains.

Essentially a sequel to Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice not only entered the superhero movie competition, they caught up to their competitors. The movie shows us an older Batman, a fan favorite, fighting in Gotham for over 20 years. The events of the movie take place two years after the destruction of Metropolis in Man of Steel. Batman senses that a being with that much power is a danger to humanity and could turn against it in a matter of minutes, leading to our demise.

After three years of development and careful steps to ensure no miscasting, it’s safe to say the movie delivered on all fronts. The cinematography was more than expected from upcoming director Zack Snyder, who clearly upped the stakes over the course of this movie’s planning. The scenes were well written and carefully planned to perfection. The pacing was a little bit off in the first act of the film but quickly stabilized shortly afterwards.

What really separates this film from its predecessors and competitors is the dark factor. What’s meant by this is that DC studios wasn’t afraid to apply a layer of hyper-realism to an already dark movie. This movie doesn’t fit the criteria of a happy ending with audiences walking out with a smile on their face. It doesn’t provide a form of escapism audiences usually look forward to when witnessing genres of mythical fiction.

As for the actors, Ben Affleck quickly proved his critics wrong by delivering one of the most accurate portrayals in comic book movie history. Gal Gadot, who plays Wonder Woman, stole every scene she was in and was a focal point in ensuring the film’s success. Lex Luthor, played by Jesse Eisenberg, went above and beyond to show the maniacal side of business moguls during their thirst for power. He did it in a tasteful manner and became the character audiences would love to hate but respect.

Meanwhile, Henry Cavill, who plays Superman in the DCU debut, showed the flawed side of a being who most would consider perfect. Public opinions were against him despite proving himself worthy of being an asset to the people of Earth during his fight with General Zod in his 2013 film.

All in all, the movie was a solid start to a cinematic universe that’ll eventually branch out with many spin-off movies and character development plots. The movie deservedly gets a 9.5/10 for not only setting up the Justice League but also providing audiences with 180 minutes of pure genius.

Egypt and China inked five memoranda of understanding in the fields of education and scientific research on Sunday in the presence of Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail, Chinese Deputy Prime Minister Liu Yandong and other representatives from the two governments, according to the private daily al-Masry al-Youm.

The official spokesman for the Egyptian Cabinet, Hossam Al-Qawish, said that the signing of the agreements comes amid the strengthening of Egyptian-Sino relations, particularly in the fields of education and research.

He added that the inking of the deals represents the implementation of issues previously agreed upon between Egypt and China during mutual visits by the leaders of each country.

The memoranda of understanding included a scholarship exchange program between the countries, with China offering 100 scholarships annually to Egyptians until 2020. The program aims to promote cooperation and to build a “constructive partnership” on issues of mutual interest, including “enhancing the capabilities of Egyptian educators and administrators,” the Cabinet spokesman said.

The agreements also included the creation of an Egyptian-Sino co-financing program in the fields of science and technology aimed at supporting cooperation between Egyptian and Chinese scholars. Egypt and China will each provide USD 10 million over the course of five years, during which the program will be implemented.

The countries also agreed to cooperate in building “Gardens of Science” – a project comprising mutual exchanges of scientific experts and workers between the countries in order to raise the competitiveness of Egyptian and Chinese companies. The project will organize seminars and forums where scientific expertise can be exchanged.

Egypt and China also agreed to establish and develop Confucian and Egyptian institutes where each country’s language and culture can be studied.

Relations between Egypt and China have recently strengthened as the leaders of each country have visited the other and signed a series of agreements. In January, the Chinese and Egyptian presidents inked 21 agreements and memoranda of understanding. During the same month, China offered Egypt a loan worth USD 1 billion, while inviting Egypt to be the guest of honour at a G20 summit in China set to take place in September.

Since the January 25 revolution in 2011, which resulted in a decline in Egypt’s foreign reserves and economic turmoil, the country has been looking to diversify its economic and trade opportunities.

The death toll from a deadly attack at a park on Sunday in Pakistan by Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a Taliban splinter group, has risen to 70.

The attack, which according to the terror organization was aimed at Christians, took place at Gulshan-e-Ishaq park in Lahore, which is often used for families to take their children to play.

At least 300 people, including many women and children, were injured in the deadly attack that left scenes of chaos and carnage as ambulances rushed to the scene.

While it is unclear how many Christians were killed in the attack, Christian families had come to the park to celebrate Easter.

The park was reportedly packed with families shortly before the suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest.

In response to the attacks, the UN Secretary General called for “swift justice”. Across the world, condemnations have come from numerous world leaders and governments, including the U.S., the U.K., and Egypt.

Christians make up about 1.6 percent of Pakistan’s population and have previously been the target of terror attacks in the country, including in 2013 when two bombs ripped through a church killing 80 people.

A recent discovery could radically change our views of one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites, Tutankhamun’s tomb. Scans of the complex in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings revealed it may still include undiscovered chambers – perhaps even the resting place of Queen Nefertiti – even though we have been studying the tomb for almost 100 years.

Mohamed El Shorbagy and Nour El Sherbini won the men’s and women’s finals, respectively, of the British Open squash championship, marking the first time for Egyptians to win both titles.

Both El Shorbagy and El Sherbini were competing against fellow Egyptians in a historic final round that saw four Egyptian players vying for the top spot, guaranteeing that the winning titles would land in Egyptian hands.

El Sherbini narrowly defeated 18-year-old Nouran Gohar, who would have been the youngest woman to secure the title had she won, after winning three out of five sets. El Sherbini nonetheless made history as the first Egyptian woman to win the championship since its creation in 1922.

“I’m very proud be the first Egyptian (woman) to win. It’s a huge thing and hopefully other Egyptians will make us proud,” El Sherbini told AFP following her historic win.

“I would like to dedicate this title to my mother land and beloved Country Egypt and the beautiful people of Egypt,” she said in a statement on her Facebook page.

On Saturday, El Sherbiny rose to the final round after defeating Malaysia’s Nicol David, ranked second worldwide, while Gohar defeated defending champion Camille Sermie in another hard-fought match.

Meanwhile, El Shorbagy won against Ramy Ashour, 28, who had previously defeated France’s Gregory Gaultier in the semi-final round.

In contrast to the women’s final, whose fate took five sets to determine, the men’s final ended after El Shorbagy won three consecutive games 11-3, 11-5 and 11-9.

Prior to the championship, world number five Ashour suffered from a hamstring injury that had prevented him from competing in several tournaments. Nonetheless, he refused to blame his loss on the injury, saying instead that he was not mentally prepared.

Despite failing to secure the top title, Ashour took to Twitter to congratulate his Egyptian compatriot on his win, saying he was “the better player.”

Mohamed was the better player today, congratulations to him … Glad my body is healthy… #allambritishopen2016

El Shorbagy also took to social media to express his happiness at winning, saying, “So proud to win my 2nd British Open and defend my title…thanks to my team for making this possible without them I would have never imagined winning a 5th successive World Series!! Thanks all for your support and congrats to Egypt for securing both titles today.”

The Supreme Administrative Court ordered the dissolution of the state body governing football, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) in a final decision on Sunday.

The court deemed the EFA elections as flawed, with results that do not show the correct legal representation of the general assembly members who voted.

The elections were held in October 2012 but two people filed a suit claiming that the elections were invalid, suspecting forgery. In January 2013, a court rejected the suit but the claimants appealed. Their appeal was accepted today. Elections to choose a new board were scheduled for September.

The Supreme Administrative Court also ruled to dissolve the board of one of the most popular sports clubs, Al Ahly, whose football team has a very large fan base nationwide. This decision is also not subject to appeal.

Although the most dominant sport in Egypt, football has had a few bumpy years after violence surrounding two football games left dozens of young men and fans dead, and games are currently being played without spectators.

In February 2012, a football stadium turned into a crime scene when over 70 people were killed in the Egyptian city of Port Said, where Al Ahly faced off a local club in a tense game. After the referee blew the final whistle, sports shows that typically discuss team performance, tactics and possession were instead dominated with talk on the rising number of deaths.

Two years later, 19 football fans were killed outside a Cairo stadium ahead of a football game between the widely popular Zamalek team and Enppi.

For many young Egyptian football fans, the game has become embroiled in the turbulent politics of the country, and the ultras groups of both Ahly and Zamalek have frequently raised demands for justice for the slain fans in their gatherings and chants.

Egyptian authorities have agreed to extend the investigation into the death of Italian PhD student Guilio Regeni following pressure from Rome, Italian Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said Sunday, according to AFP.

The Egyptian Interior Ministry announced on Thursday that it had killed a group of men in New Cairo in a shoot-out that transpired as the security forces were attempting to arrest them.

Later that day, Egyptian police reportedly found a bag with the belongings of Regeni during a raid on an apartment belonging to the sister of one of the “gang members” killed during the shoot-out.

The Italian government rejected the claim that a gang that apparently specialized on kidnapping and scamming foreigners while posing as policemen would be responsible for murdering the Italian student.

“It is important that, in the face of our emphasis on the quest for truth, the Egyptians changed track in a few hours and told us that their investigations are continuing,” Alfano told the Corriere della Sera newspaper on Sunday.

He added that Italian investigators should be “directly involved, participating in questioning and evidence gathering … Our input is essential.”

“I repeat to Giulio’s parents and to the Italian public that the Italian government will get the name of the murderers,” he continued.

The Italian investigators have pointed to several inconsistencies with Egypt’s version of what happened to the student. They claim that it is unlikely that the kidnappers would have held on to evidence that could connect them to Regeni several months after his death.

It would also be implausible that the kidnappers would torture their victim for a number of days – as was the case with Regeni – before they killed him if they were only after a ransom. The investigators also pointed out that the fact that the police killed all of the alleged kidnappers – making it impossible to interrogate them – takes away from the story’s credibility.

Giulio Regeni’s parents said of the alleged discovery by Egyptian authorities of their son’s murderers that they were “wounded and embittered by the umpteenth attempt at a cover-up on the part of the Egyptian authorities.”

Commenting on the alleged gang the Interior Ministry referred to in its Thursday statement, Italian investigators said, “There is no definitive element confirming they were responsible.”

On Friday evening Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni insisted: “We want the truth.”

Regeni, who was researching independent trade unions in Egypt, was found dead on the outskirts of Cairo ten days after he went missing. Autopsies have revealed several indicators of torture, indicating he suffered a “slow, painful death.”

Egyptian authorities had invited a team of Italian investigators to join the probe into Regeni’s murder but the Italian team has repeatedly complained that their Egyptian counterparts have withheld necessary evidence.

egypt parliament

Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail presented the government’s program to the country’s House of Representatives on Sunday, with a focus on the country’s economic situation.

Ismail began his speech by outlining the “solidification” of the political landscape, pointing to the country’s various entities, including a judiciary “that guarantees rights and does justice to those who are wronged,” a police force “that implements the law and respects human rights” and “media that is free,” in addition to the parliament acting as a watchdog, a president who leads and a constitution to regulate and organize the country.

“Despite all the challenges we face since the Egyptian people corrected on June 30, 2013 the roadmap of its revolution…we have succeeded in taking some steps forward,” Ismail said.

He also said that, while the country remains in a “critical stage,” there is an improvement in economic indicators that “cannot be ignored,” including unemployment dropping a modest 0.6 percent, from 13.3 to 12.7 percent. Ismail said that these indicators show that the government is “heading in the right direction.”

Ismail also said that the country is “facing challenges to its national security on the Arab and regional levels, which requires a boost in spending on defense and internal and external security…this certainly affects the economic situation, which is part of national security.”

The premier admitted that the quality of public services – including education, health services, transportation and housing – has declined and requires the injection of funding to improve its standards, which he described as “another challenge the state faces.”

He added that, while the budget deficit has modestly decreased, it remains high by international standards. Ismail pointed to the hike in subsidy and public service expenditures, without an increase in national production, as reasons behind the deficit.

Ismail further took note to the rapid depletion of the country’s foreign currency reserves – from USD 35.2 million in June 2010 to approximately USD 16.5 million in December 2015 – caused by the decline in tourism, adding that the downing of the Russian plane in October 2015 “undoubtedly had negative effects” on the industry, which has traditionally been Egypt’s main earner of foreign currencies.

“We wished to highlight the aforementioned challenges at the beginning of our presentation of the government’s program to paint a clear picture of the current situation,” Ismail said in his address. “As you can see, the challenges and difficulties are plentiful and the problems run deep. However, there is nothing in these challenges that prevents us from facing them.”

Ismail continued by outlining his government’s vision for running the country, including a “serious commitment” to the reform process on the political, social, environmental and administrative levels; following a “scientific method” and implementing innovative ideas to face the country’s challenges, which will force them to take “long-postponed decisions”; a promise that any economic decision will be accompanied by programs for social protection that the government will ensure is reaching those in need; taking seriously the issue of corruption and “working hand-in-hand” with regulatory apparatuses; finding a solution for bureaucracy; and placing the satisfaction of Egyptian citizens “at the heart of the government’s program,” which will address the populace’s main concerns, including education, health services, and housing.

The prime minister’s speech was not aired live but was rather recorded and televised later on – a decision that was controversial, with many claiming it was necessary for the speech to be aired live, as it is a “national issue.”

Ismail’s presentation of the government’s program has been delayed several times, as the House of Representatives took longer than expected to pass the multitude of presidential decrees Al-Sisi had passed in the absence of parliament.

According to Article 146 of the Egyptian constitution, the president is to appoint a prime minister to form a cabinet and present its program to the House of Representatives. If the government fails to secure the vote of confidence from the majority of the House within 30 days at the most, the majority party or bloc in the House of Representatives will form a new government and name a new prime minister. If the second cabinet also fails to secure the vote of confidence, the House of Representatives will be dissolved.

A finely wrought Carolingian vessel, still encrusted with pieces of textile

Around the time the Irish were stamping out the Viking presence in their country, local lore says the Scots and Vikings also fought a battle near Galloway, Scotland. In 2014, a metal detectorist took that legend, swept the area, and discovered a hoard of 100 “strange and wonderful objects” that were about 1,000 years old.

No one knows how the person who buried the hoard came across the spectacular stuff or why it was buried. One can only speculate that perhaps there was a battle, and perhaps the items were buried beforehand or during the course of it in case the one who hid the hoard had to flee.

Conservators are just now releasing images of the Galloway hoard, showing items found in a Carolingian vessel or pot. The pot itself, from Western Europe, is very rare and is one of only six of the type ever found.

“The hoard is the most important Viking discovery in Scotland for over 100 years. The items from within the vessel, which may have been accumulated over a number of generations, reveal objects from across Europe and from other cultures with non-Viking origins,” says a press release from Historic Scotland.

Gohar, Ashour, El Shorbagy, and El Sherbini all made the finals at the British Open

Gohar, Ashour, El Shorbagy, and El Sherbini all made the finals at the British Open

For the first time, there will be an all-Egyptian men’s and women’s final at the British Open, with four Egyptians featuring in the finals. The results mean that Egyptians will win both British Open titles.

On Sunday, Ramy Ashour clenched the historic moment after producing a formidable performance to defeat Gregory Gaultier of France. Ashour’s performance was hailed by AFP as “breathtaking” and “stunning”.

Ashour will face his compatriot Mohamed El Shorbagy, the top-seeded titleholder, who defeated Karim Abdel Gawad in the semi-finals.

On the women’s side, Nour El Sherbini defeated world number two Nicol David in another remarkable performance, while 18-year-old Nouran Gohar defeated defending champion Camille Sermie.

Gohar’s achievement means that she has a chance of becoming the first player ever to win the British Open’s senior and junior championships simultaneously. However, she will face a tough challenge against favorite El Sherbini in the finals.

Regardless of who wins the women’s finals, it will mark the first time an Egyptian women has clenched the top title at the British Open.

Speaking to AFP, El Shorbagy said that the all Egyptian finals are a great moment for Egypt.

“It is such a great moment for Egypt and it’s a great honour to be part of that,” said El Shorbagy. “We all feel proud – we are making a piece of history. I am really happy for my country.”

Hebron city centre

Hebron city centre

Shabbat Shalom!” He kindly greeted the stranger on the Sabbath. The response:

Leh Lehizdayen!” (Hebrew for f**k you).

This is a typical interaction between Khalil* and one of the neighboring settlers. Owning a shop in the Old City of Hebron within the Israeli controlled H2 precinct has its peculiar challenges. With 500 settlers living in four settlements next to at least 30,000 Palestinians, H2 remains a focal point for Israeli-Palestinian tensions. Home to a magnificent Herodian structure called the Haram Al-Ibrahimi (also known as the Tomb of the Patriarchs), the area holds immense religious value to Muslims and Jews alike. It is no surprise that Hebron has a reputation for being a troubled city.

Determined to enhance my understanding of the perpetual Israeli-Palestinian conflict as well as to satisfy my zealous infatuation with Middle Eastern affairs, I embarked on my first trip to the region, destination: Hebron. Entering the Palestinian Authority-controlled H1 area of Hebron was an experience in itself. Driving along Central Hebron’s Ein-Sarah Street one sees a lively city: Frantic drivers trying to navigate amidst busy traffic, bustling stores and markets with merchants screaming prices to entice passers-by and young students who’ve just finished class at the Al-Hussein bin Ali Secondary School littered along the main street playing all sorts of games.

Beit Romano Building and Checkpoint

Beit Romano Building and Checkpoint

Walking through the famed Bab Al-Zawiya market, I crossed into the H2’s Old City. Welcoming me was the imposing and heavily fortified Beit Romano building guarded by Israeli soldiers. Manoeuvring through the paths of the archaic Old City passageways, the atmosphere was a disturbing contrast to Hebron’s center, pervaded by a mysterious quietness. Melancholic shopkeepers disheartened by the lack of business; young children sitting amongst the stray cats; and looking up, one sees a net cast over the open segments of the passageway to prevent potential damage from rock-throwing settlers. At the end of the pass was a checkpoint with metal detectors staffed by IDF soldiers. Exit through and on your right in all its glory stands the Tomb of the Patriarchs. Straight ahead is Al-Shuhada Street. Welcome to Khalil’s reality.

Young girl outside the Tomb of Patriarchs

Young girl outside the Tomb of Patriarchs

Al-Shuhada Street is a pertinent illustration of the occupation’s devastating impact on local businesses. It was once the prominent economic and cultural point of the Old City, existing as a vibrant commercial center with large crowds congregating in its busy markets. Today, it is eerily quiet and void of any dynamic life with soldiers stationed at various points, protecting settlers who use the street for passage. Despite agreements negotiated in the Hebron Protocol, from the Second Intifada onwards, economic activity has been extinguished on the once-lively street. Perhaps recently it has only been associated with stabbings, shootings and of course settlers.

Attacked by five men armed with stones near his store on the infamous street, Khalil has firsthand experience of settler aggression. Protected by thousands of Israeli soldiers, the radical settlers make rough neighbors for the local Palestinians in H2. In particular, this area has a decorated history of settler violence against Palestinian residents. Khalil’s story is echoed by similar accounts of Palestinian residents living in H2 who have complained of the lack of protection afforded to victims of settler attacks. Khalil’s attackers escaped with impunity – a recurring theme in many Hebronite narratives. This concerning trend of settler impunity was noted at a UN Security Council briefing in November last year.

Khalil is all too familiar with Hebron’s bloodshed. Recently, the situation has worsened – especially with the latest rounds of violence, which have aroused discussions pertaining to a Third Intifada. At least 23 Palestinians have been the subjects of arbitrary extrajudicials killings by Israeli forces in H2’s Old City since September 2015 in response to alleged stabbing attacks. Only recently an IDF soldier shot a subdued Palestinian stabbing assailant at point-blank range prompting even Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu to condemn the killing. Two of Khalil’s teenage cousins were shot dead at a military checkpoint near H2’s Al-Rajabi house after being fired upon by an Israeli soldier. Israeli authorities claim they thwarted a stabbing attack but a witness account suggested otherwise. Lamenting the loss of his cousins, Khalil acknowledges that Palestinian stabbing attacks do occur but remains highly skeptical of the idea that his two cousins would uncharacteristically risk their lives by carrying out a knifing attack. Interestingly, Khalil strongly expressed his disapproval of the recent wave of Palestinian stabbings.

H2`s Rajabi House

H2’s Rajabi House

Economically, the Old City in H2 has been crippled under the occupation. “I’ve sold nothing today,” sighs Khalil while his friend standing nearby proclaims, “I hate these soldiers,” referring to 3 IDF soldiers stationed outside the Jewish entrance of the Tomb of the Patriarchs. Shops in the Old City are at the mercy of Israeli authorities and can be closed at any time. In general, severe restrictions have been placed on residents of H2 and the Old City in particular. Since November last year these restrictions have included limitations on movement, increased checkpoints and the establishment of closed military zones. For a young man like Khalil who supports his family by operating the store, the financial consequences of these restrictions have been disastrous.

Like many other Hebronites, Khalil sees these punitive measures as Israeli attempts to purge Palestinians from the Old City. Although organizations exist like the Hebron Rehabilitation Committee, which works to restore the Old City, the situation remains intolerable for most. Only last month Khalil took part in a protest demanding the opening of Al-Shuhada Street and an end to the severe restrictions imposed on residents of H2 by the IDF, which have made life unbearable.

Tomb of the Patriarchs

Tomb of the Patriarchs

Predictably so and to the distaste of Khalil and H2’s Palestinian population, Netanyahu has reiterated his continued support for settlements notwithstanding their illegality under international law according to the Fourth Geneva Convention. Even with Netanyahu’s allies criticizing illegal settlements, the current Israeli administration remains undeterred from continuing to pursue these controversial policies. Unfortunately, the negative multidimensional effect of these settlements on people like Khalil is often overlooked by the mainstream media.

Yet, in the face of all his tragedies and hardships, Khalil remains optimistic in contrast to his friends and most other residents from H2’s largely demoralized and traumatized population. “I hope we have peace in the future. Jews and Muslims living together,” he says, envisioning a binational state for Palestinians and Israelis. Dissimilar to the settlers of Hebron who refuse to befriend him, Khalil speaks positively of his Jewish friends in Tel Aviv. “Any Jewish person is welcome to come to my house. But peace cannot be made with a gun,” he says, referring to the ongoing occupation.

The truth, he believes, is being distorted by both Israeli and Palestinian media for political purposes as Khalil emphasizes his distrust for online news reports, distaste for incitement on local television and disapproval of dubious government agendas. Remaining hopeful for an improvement in the situation, Khalil calls on ordinary Israelis to awaken and challenge their government’s occupation of Hebron. Hebron is a quintessential example of Israel’s occupation and settlement policies creating a sense of hopelessness for young Palestinians and feeding extremist ideologies in the West Bank. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in a statement this January cited the occupation, expansion of settlements and Israel’s lack of commitment to a two-state solution as factors contributing to Palestinian violence in the West Bank.

Entering the Old City

Entering the Old City

Reflecting on his predicament and feeling abandoned by the world as many Hebronites in the Old City do, Khalil passionately protests: “When you go back to your country, tell them what you saw with your own eyes. Tell them our story.”

Not discouraged by the first encounter with the radical settler who cursed him, he smiles, “I hope he speaks kinder words next time we see each other.”

Five Egyptian conscripts died and seven others were injured after a landmine exploded on the road between Safaga and Hurghada, said a security source to private media outlets.

According to ONtv, the incident occurred near the Red Sea resort town of Hurghada, with all those injured transported to a near by military hospital.

Meanwhile, Youm7 reported that the explosion was the result of a landmine that had been laid during World War II.

Approximately 19.7 million mines were laid in Egypt’s Western Desert, while another four million were laid in the east by the Germans led by Rommel following their withdrawal.

The landmines have resulted in thousands of injuries and deaths across Egypt since World War II.

In this handout picture released by the Vatican Press Office, Pope Francis performs the foot-washing ritual at the Castelnuovo di Porto refugees center near Rome on March 24, 2016.

Pope Francis made headlines on Saturday after he washed and kissed the feet of 12 young Muslim, Christian and Hindu refugees in an act aimed at bolstering international protection for refugees.

In statements, the Pope said that all people are children of the same God, regardless of their religion.

“All of us together, Muslims, Hindus, Catholics, Copts, Evangelical [Protestants] brothers and sisters — children of the same God — we want to live in peace, integrated,” said the Pope, who conducted the ritual at Castelnuovo di Porto refugee center near Rome, Italy.

The ritual is based on Jesus’ washing of the feet of 12 of his apostles at the Last Supper and is considered a gesture of servitude.

According to the Vatican, those who participated in the ritual included three Muslims from Mali, Syria and Pakistan; three Eritrean Coptic Christians; four Catholic Christians from Nigeria; one Italian Catholic; and a Hindu individual from India.

Commenting on the recent Brussels terror attacks, Pope Francis said that the aim of such attacks is to separate us.

“There are manufacturers, arms dealers who want blood, not peace; they want the war, not fraternity,” the Pope said.

“Today, at this time, when I do the same act of Jesus washing the feet of twelve of you, let us all make a gesture of brotherhood, and let us all say: ‘We are different, we are different, we have different cultures and religions, but we are brothers and we want to live in peace.`”

New fossils from Kenya suggest that an early hominid species -- Australopithecus afarensis -- lived far eastward beyond the Great Rift Valley and much farther than previously thought. An international team of paleontologists led by Emma Mbua of Mount Kenya University and Masato Nakatsukasa of Kyoto University report findings of fossilized teeth and forearm bone from an adult male and two infant A. afarensis from an exposure eroded by the Kantis River in Ongata-Rongai, a settlement in the outskirts of Nairobi.

"So far, all other A. afarensis fossils had been identified from the center of the Rift Valley," explains Nakatsukasa. "A previous Australopithecus bahrelghazali discovery in Chad confirmed that our hominid ancestor`s distribution covered central Africa, but this was the first time an Australopithecus fossil has been found east of the Rift Valley. This has important implications for what we understand about our ancestor`s distribution range, namely that Australopithecus could have covered a much greater area by this age."

A. afarensis is believed to have lived 3,700,000-3,000,000 years ago, as characterized by fossils like "Lucy" from Ethiopia.

Egyptian police say they found murdered student Giulio Regeni’s personal belongings in a “gang member’s” apartment while Italian investigators say the case is “far from closed,” the Italian ANSA reported Friday.

The interior ministry suggested in a statement late Thursday that there may be a link between the slain gang members in New Cairo that allegedly “impersonated policemen” as well as “kidnapped foreigners and mugged them” and Regeni’s murder.

Italian investigators say there are “inconsistencies” in the Egyptian police’s narrative that Regeni’s belongings, including his university ID card, passport, credit card, and more, were found in a red handbag in an apartment in the Qalyubia province.

Police said on Thursday that they had killed the gang members after “an exchange of fire,” and published the names of four of the deceased, whose ages ranged between 26 and 60 years old.

According to ANSA, Italian investigators were suspicious that gang members would hold on to evidence such as Regeni’s passport for so long, and were also unlikely to have tortured the Ph.D. student for over a week, a practice long associated with Egyptian national security.

It is also unlikely that police should kill all the members of the gang and prevent themselves of receiving any statements, the investigators said.

Many Egyptian social media users echoed similar speculations and mocked Egyptian police for “creating plots” that resembled “lame Hollywood action movies.”

Early in February, Egypt’s interior minister said that he was “disturbed” by speculations that Egyptian police tortured and killed Regeni, whose body was found in a ditch, marred by torture marks and bruises, 10 days after his disappearance on the fifth anniversary of the 2011 Uprising.

A team of archaeologists is excavating a huge cemetery of the common people in Attica, Greece. They’ve found some fascinating phenomena of the ancient world contained within—including “gifts from the living to the dead” and a body whose hands were shackled in iron.

The researchers, working with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, are carefully digging and analyzing remains from the cemetery, which dates from the 8th to the 5th centuries BC in the city of Phaleron in the Faliron Delta region. So far they’ve excavated about 1,500 skeletons, including 358 babies and toddlers who were buried in jars.

Phaleron is 4 miles (6.5 km) south of Athens. It was a port in the Classical Era. The burials in the cemetery are mostly from the Archaic Period.

The archaeologists said the burials were of people from small villages and settlements in the Faliron Delta and perhaps as far away as the rock of the Acropolis, which is about 4 miles (6.5 km) from the cemetery.

As so a large portion of these things do, everything starts on an otherworldly island. For this situation, Gogapoe Island, a spot populated by both people and beasts. What begins as a mission to get back Niko`s birthday cake turns into a journey for the destiny of Gogapoe itself. Anyway, ya know, cake is still super imperative, as well.

Heaps of amicable creatures will join Niko`s mission and utilize their nutty forces to crush snags and embarrass foes. Swarms of malice beasts will result in anarchy and for the most part be jerkfaces, yet that is nothing you can`t alter with headbutts, ice breath, stink mists and rainbow barf.
